"what do you do for a living?" problem
I've been dancing for about 5 years now, and I have no shame in what I do. However, I know that most people are judgmental or/and will have misconceptions about me once they learn what I do for a living..
Now, I find myself giving an evasive answer or even lying when somebody asks me about my occupation..
Is it just me? Or what do you guys say when somebody ask you about your job?/:O
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
I tell people that i'm a bartender/cocktail waitress for a catering company & it works like a charm :) OR I say I have an online buisness & that I work from home
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
Everyone ask me that and I've never thought to say I work for a catering company that's a great idea. I'm not ashamed either but people really do judge. Its especially hard to meet a nice guy bc they instantly think you're a hooker. I lied to my ex for months & finally confessed. Now we are both strippers haha.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
I'm working on this right now...
It depends on the person. If it's someone I don't know well I usually just say "waitress" "bartender" etc. But if it's somebody who I am friends with I usually say babysitter/nanny because when they ask me more details I can easily lie and it's not a job they can check up on (I had a friend who I told I was a waitress and made up a place I worked and she actually went there to say hi once...).
I'm trying to decide what to tell my roommates right now though :( I told them I work for a consulting company in America from home but that's not going to explain where I go every night!
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
depends on the person. all my friends and family know what i do, but if its somebody like a doctor, therapist, or in a professional setting with strangers then i will say im a waitress or a nurse assistant.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
Usually I said model but if I was working at a club and say I was busy a night I would say waitress, overnight stocking clerk or even tutor.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
depending on who I talk to I usually say I am in sales if they ask for details I say I do medical sales for a plastic surgeon, I am in esthetition school anyways so I figure I could answer ?s...lol
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
"Making more money in one night than you make in a week." ::)
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
I think babysitter sounds perfect. The crazy/late night hours. I used bartender/waitress before my family found out and they asked soo many questions about drinks and they even talked about coming to visit! That was stressful. They won't even WANT to visit if you're babysitting lol.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
It really depends on the person/situation. I tell my family and anyone I don't want to know that I work in a bar. My friends and housemates know.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
retired now but i most always told the truth .....when asked now what i do i say i am a retired dancer if qusetioned more i say i was a stripper......no hideing it ... made good money and enjoy and enjoy a good retirement now...
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
to ppl that didn't know me or my schedule well I would say (when I was still in school) that I was in a bunch of commercials and ads as a baby and young kid and got a full scholarship to school so that $ fully supported me. then if it would come up I would just say I liked to go out a lot, that way I could frequently weave in conversations stuff about the club, but just rephrase it as if the guys I was talking about were bad dates or guys trying to hit on me at the bar. it was much easier to say this then have to come up with a fake job but now that I'm graduated it doesn't really work anymore so I just use waitress.

Tell them your doing bar or waitress work for a Events company, that will explain the late nights.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
if you are not ashamed of what you do then there is no reason to lie about it
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
I'm not ashamed of masturbating, but I wouldn't talk about it to my grandma or friend's new boyfriend. Sometimes you need a cover story. I prefer that not everyone know what I do, because people are overly judgmental. I also hide that I am an atheist, even though I'm not ashamed of that either. I still want money from the religious customers.

I don't lie about my job because I'm ashamed. I lie about my job because the world is full of ignorant assholes.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
there's also safety issues to take into consideration. getting home late with hundreds of dollars of cash on you can be dangerous if that info gets to wrong person. if you live in a small town it can also harm vanilla job prospects, or if you are going to school to be a teacher or working with kids in any way.
i'll lie to strangers because it automatically makes them judge me or give me a big lecture about how "stripper have lower self esteem and i should try and get out of that lifestyle".
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
Depends on who it is. I avoid lying potential lovers/ boyfriends because you want them to see you as honest. If it took 4 months to say you dance, will 4 additional months bring about hand job confessions? Now in a public situation, I often say nightclub because if you speak well and are dressed in less provocative "normal" manner, people think bartender witness hostess whatever they want to think. And with the average person being self absorbed, a quick subject change helps. I personally never say waitress bartender anymore because that excuse is so common that with me it seems to have the opposite affect and make them figure it out! I have no issue lying and saying self employed. Well technically I/we are. And that comes across and ambitious and all that.
Re: "what do you do for a living?" problem
I used to use the bartender cover until I got asked to make drinks. So now it's a waitress. If they pry, I 'confess' that I'm a cocktail waitress. They usually give it a rest after that.
