Tired of negative attitudes
I'm sick of people's negative attitudes towards stripping. If you don't like it, if it's tearing your soul into pieces DON'T DO IT, and leave the girls who do it in peace! I have a friend who quit the business for her career and ran into financial trouble. I help her get a job and give her bachelor parties (which is basically like dropping a grand in her lap) and now I have to hear about how she thinks stripping is so "depressing."
I like my job, I excel at my job. I'm proud of who I am and THANKFUL for the opportunity to make a good living. Because I consider myself fortunate, I maintain a professional appearance and attitude towards work. Don't knock me for it and don't knock my profession. If you're just in it for the short term, or need quick cash, get your money and get out but don't piss and moan to me about it.
I got my RN and couldn't do it because I find sticking tubes up people's butt and privates is gross and not worth the money, but I'm not going to tell a nurse how disgusting I find her job. It's called common courtesy, and just because I'm a stripper doesn't mean I'm exempt from it.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
This is one of the reasons why I like to wear earbuds in the DR before work.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
Right? And kudos to all the girls who are or have gone on to bigger, better things. Here's a cookie for you. But when your bigger better things aren't covering your bills every month don't lecture me on how I should follow in your divine footsteps.
I now know six ladies who in the past couple months have returned to stripping because their career doesn't pay enough or they divorced/broke up with their meal ticket. Don't moan to me! I've been busting ass straight through. Life happens.

Haha yeah my language is a bit animated. The above is what I would like to say to friends and strangers who insult me to my face while I remain gracious to them. Call it a rant.

^Haha yeah I wanted to say the same thing. I noticed all of that user's posts haven't been useful or helpful in any way. Probably a troll account.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
I had a terrible attitude when I was working in HR. Even though my boss liked my work, and I was good at my job, I hated it. Sometimes, people get stuck doing things they don't want to do because they are good at their jobs.
I'm like the OP, and I love being a stripper. But it took me a while to accept this fact about myself. In fact, when I quit in 2006, I was consumed with self loathing for being in my 30's and still working as a stripper. My picture of what a stripper was supposed to be didn't match my mental image of who I was at the time.
Now I'm like, Fuck it. I'm doing what I want and making good money in the process. I stopped looking at myself through the eyes of others and started doing what makes me happy. The road out of the cognitive dissonance I was experiencing was not an easy one. The hardest part was the fact that I spent so much time and money on my education to discover that the field I was trained for was a form of slow torture to my personality.
So, I'm back to stripping. And loving it. Sometimes, a little too much. But I get it when people have a hard time in this job. It's hard to be engaged in an activity that doesn't match your mental picture of yourself. Mostly I just ignore people who spend their work day complaining about how much they hate the job. No matter what I say, I can't help them. They have to discover their true selves on their own.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
@ Tourdefranzia I have danced for 15 years and I'm 35. There was a time when I struggled with dancing. I had a complete mental breakdown at age 21. I've also tried different careers and just didn't like them, so I too can relate with girls who struggle with the job. It is hard. I'm glad you overcame those obstacles and can be proud of who you are. You aren't living your life according to someone else's standards.
I feel like the comments from my friend, and the attitude I've gotten from other people are coming from a different place. It's like they are trying to convince me that they are above the job and me. Maybe it's from a place of jealousy, or one of those instances in which someone is unhappy and resentful because I'm happy. Either way it's disrespectful to me.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
Oh and the whole too old to strip thing has already been proven to be ridiculous. I know a 43 year old stripper who runs circles around me.

Amen, sister ! I have an RT and also couldn't continue to do it full time ... after a hospital patient infected me with TB, after a doctor almost cost me my job because I 'raised a ruckus' after recognizing that following his order would have wound up killing the patient, after risking some portion of my own life on countless occasions drawing / handling / testing AIDS tainted patient blood samples, etc.

Amplify this with the common but mistaken assumptions that girls wind up as exotic dancers because of stereotypes ...
- dancers lack the intelligence / skills / work ethic to successfully hold down a 'straight' job
- dancers are inherently morally corrupt
- dancers are lazy / irresponsible

Indeed. My own mother was my biggest 'critic' when I quit my hospital job in favor of full time dancing. Her 'tune' changed abruptly, however, when her boiler puked all over her basement floor and none of her friends or other family members were willing or able to help her with the $3,000 replacement cost before all of her pipes would have frozen !!! It was at that point where my mother was ( finally ) able to look past her pre-conceptions and understand that my approach to dancing was 'professional', and was resulting in a far better quality of life / future opportunities for her grandson !!!
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
And you'd think ex strippers would understand the job and what it's about but the ones I know are the most offensive. It's like they are mad that I'm doing okay and would be satisfied to see me fail. But I'm not so they start their digs. I had to drop an ex stripper friend of 10 years who went out of her way to put me down once she "moved up in the world." If you're so superior to me now that mom and dad provided you with a career don't be friends with me.

I loved this so hard. Thank you. THANK YOU.
I just had a discussion the other day about how I didn't like other jobs because I felt demeaned and degraded and wasn't getting paid enough for it.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
Wow!!! I couldn't have said it better myself. I think its mostly in your perception & how you carry yourself. Granted its a very difficult job but that's most jobs. Such a great post. This was really weighing on my mind today. A lot of people judge us harshly for no reason & I struggle with that. I've decided my main priority is my future & the right people will accept me. Awesome post!! Thanks!!

Yes! This thread's sooooo inspiring to me..I want to go back, right now lacking the courage to do so..plus I feel like they'd say I'm too old.

Hah! Age is a number! Go get em!
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
Why be pissed about other dancers' negative attitudes? They're entitled to be stuck in their pity parties while you're busy making money!!
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
I tell people my age proudly. I was young chubby and stupid. Now I'm older, hotter, leaner and 10,000x meaner.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
Amen to all of this. It took me til just a few months ago to realize that my "real" career that I went to school for 7 years for, sucks ass. My best friend is practicing our mutual career. She makes 55-60k and can barely pay the interest on her student loans. I have payed off about 25k in principal since graduation. Stripping. Which is what I did before the graduate degree. I wish I had just kept dancing! I'd have a positive net worth and would have traveled more of the world.
If you love dancing, keep doing it. Haters can hate. I'll be in the corner counting my cash!
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
^I've had to go the vanilla route recently to get experience for a graduate degree. Being on a fixed income definitely sucks sometimes, but maybe at least your friend's salary will increase over the years.
Anyway this thread makes me want to come out of semi-retirement! I probably will when the time comes to go to grad school.
Re: Tired of negative attitudes
I wish her salary would go up, but she's been there for almost 3 years with no raise. It's not like vanilla jobs don't have their benefits. I would like to have paid maternity leave so I can have children, but I will just have to figure that out.
And of course I do have the benefit of the education to fall back on when I want to quit dancing. There is a lot of security in that. Not trying to be a downer on education either! Haha

I love this so much! It's taken me a long time to admit proudly that I do like dancing because smart ladies like us shouldn't like it right? I was at the top of my class and everyone thought I'd be a doctor/lawyer/rocket scientist when I grew up. It feels politically incorrect to admit that I enjoy it. It's so "anti feminist" and all that bullshit. I have seen dancers 50+ still doing their thing and making way more $ than me. I used to think they were just stuck in life and felt sorry for them...But after quitting and then trying the vanilla job grind, I get it! After seeing so many of my peers deeply unhappy and stuck in their careers I'm thankful for this job. We all have bad days but on good nights I feel empowered as a woman and that I'm finally being paid (almost) what I think I'm worth. If I didn't love my other future job so much (to the point where I'd do it for free) I would certainly make a career of this. I never thought I would ever dance, much less enjoy dancing but for some reason I do.

That really does suck, you'd expect salary to go up with more time put in.

This is true, especially with slow season summer coming soon. I'll probably pick up more hours and try to get some overtime rather than go to the club on my off time. I always used to take off most of July/August when dancing full time. But I like that dancing is available to me at any time.
