finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
Hey ladies,
So this will be the first year I am filing taxes on my own, my parents have claimed me as a dependent or I've used the services of my dad's accountant.
I am very confused as to how to file taxes as a stripper/escort and I feel like I need some guidance from an accountant. I don't know ANYTHING about filing, I'm a total newb. I thought I just filed at the end of the year but one of my managers told me I should be filing quarterly?
I didn't know that was even a thing, which is why I REALLY need to sit down with an account and have them go through everything with me. My question is, will any old accountant be willing to work with me or do I need to try and find one who is sex worker friendly?
Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
i read that if you owe more than 1,000 in taxes ( after you've made your deductions or tax credits into consideration), then you should be filing quarterly.
i've had my taxes done by a regular accountant and he's never given me any shit about my job or messed anything up.
Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
Its optional to do it quarterly or every year. Our club put magnets on our lockers every year during tax season. I file as independent contractors. Since he does so many dancers he's got the whole thing down pretty well. You could bring bank statements to show your cash deposits. He deducts work clothes/shoes and considers partial deduction for hair/nails/tanning/gas/cell phone/gym membership. I also bring my daughter's daycare info and he does all of it. Done it two years.
Ask your managers if they know someone.
Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
If you can't find a sex worker friendly accountant, the next best thing will be one that's well-versed in filing for self-employed/independent contractors. It's a step more complicated than filing for someone who received a pay cheque due to all the deductions and payments, so you want someone who at least knows that.
I believe it's only very large corporations that have to make quarterly payments in the UK, though I know they are a must in the US. I'm not sure what your situation will be as an American working in the UK on your British passport, but an accountant who has worked with expats might be worth consulting.

^thanks!
Would filing quarterlies help me when I have to sign a new lease in the fall, as far as showing some kind of proof of income since I won't have payslips?

Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
In terms of dancer-friendly accountants, does anyone know a list of them somewhere on the web organized by region? I found wearedancersnyc.com that lists a bunch as well as lawyers, etc. but nothing for my area :(
Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
^I have a recommendation for you!
Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
in regard to your UK income, you'll have to file with HM Revenue as a 'sole trader' ... with the tax return due next April, and with 'estimated tax' payments due on July 31st and January 31st ( although you can skip the upcoming July 31st payment because your UK business is 'new' )
Additionally, you will also have to file a tax return with the US IRS and California Franchise Tax Board, reporting both your US / California income earned in early 2014 prior to moving to the UK, as well as your UK income earned through the end of 2014. Yes the USA and California both attempt to tax the income of all citizens, even if that income is derived from a foreign country. Certain 'exclusions' and 'credits' may apply on IRS / Cal FTB tax returns which will reduce the 'damage' of double taxation.
It may be difficult to track down an accountant who is familiar with both UK and US taxes. But with all of the international finance taking place in London, undoubtedly your tax situation isn't unique.

A few pro-domme girls here in London use this fella's services:

Also, this site has been useful to me in terms of explaining how to keep good accounts, though I haven't interacted with the owner:

He would! I was self-employed when I last moved. An accountant looked over my books and wrote a simple letter saying, "I can confirm that Ms Sloth's income is X pounds." Fairly straight-forward. He doesn't need to mention any details of your business at all.

He comes regularly to London, and if you want to hire him he will travel here to see you. He will explain everything.
And I am quite sure he will have plenty of advice of how to prove income to landlords etc. I had quite a lot of problems in my private life last year where I needed lots of documents and proofs and he was a life saviour. Couldn't recommend him more!

Re: finding a 'sex worker-friendly' accountant?
Would any UK girls be able to recommend a UK-based accountant who specialises in this field? I'm not worried about what people think, but I *do* want someone who is familiar with the industry and helps me claim on camming-related expenses such as a partial amount on beauty treatments and who is is of course reliable. I have Googled and been contacted by accountants, but I can't find many of their credentials and qualifications and very few of them seem to have much in the way of feedback - which is a huge security concern for me. I'd really appreciate any feedback on this, even if it's someone to steer clear of. Thank you! :)
