Safety stores/products? Didn't really know which thread to put this under...
I was wondering if any of you girls know of any online sites or shops that sell items dedicated to basically making sure you make it home/don't get raped/kidnapped/etc. Sites that sell mace, things like mace, maybe even devices that allow you to coyly alert the police if you're put in the type of situation where you might need to?
Come to think of it should this be in body business? I feel like it technically should...but it's not really that kind of topic...I don't know.

B4 you look to purchase anything, have you checked out the weapons laws in your area? You want to be real careful abt trying to purchase, or God forbid use, mace or related products if they are not legal where you are. I carry a weapon myself, but altho I know damn well how to use it, just having it on my person is, shall we say, legally not-kosher. That's a risk I am willing to take tho, bc if a confrontation escalates to the point where I am drawing an item w/ self-defence in mind I am not intending for the other person to walk away.
Idk where you would purchase mace or the like. In the meantime, self-defence classes & sm study of the human body would be a great investment. When your objective is to disable & escape rather than kill, you can still cause sm solid damage w/ the right physical training & a solid knowledge of human anatomy.

i agree with take a self defense course, kung fu, aikido, etc . they are a lot of fun, a good workout, and will serve you a lot better than mace in a lot of situations, and they cannot be taken from you and used against you.. i also hear a % of the population is immune to mace.

The best advice on self defense I got from a friend who is an expert in several martial arts is "Run!". Fighting in the real world is very different to any kind of training you may undertake and that training can often give people false confidence, which can be particularly dangerous if your attacker has a weapon.
My choice of safety kit consists of trainers and gender disguising clothes with a can of hair/ body spray in my hand that will blind someone long enough for me to run "Oh officer, i was just freshening up when he attacked me!"

Yes, smtg like 10-15% of ppl according to one of my police relatives. On a related note, same relative also suggested carrying a travel-sized spray bottle of bug spray, "since ain't no one immune to that shit' . Still carries the same risk of it being taken & used against you tho.

My friend has ordered stuff from this site, I think: http://www.thehomesecuritysuperstore...e-weapons-c=36
I feel very strongly about self-defense, and just buying weapons or mace or whatever isn't going to be your best bet in a bad situation. You need to train your body to react to common situations. I do think that running is one of the best options for women--but what if you're in heels and your attacker came prepared in his Nikes? You simply won't get very far. In some situations, you need to seriously injure someone before you have a chance of getting away, and it's not an easy thing to do if you haven't practiced. First of all, you will panic. You will fumble trying to get something from your purse. You will roll your ankle in your heels. You might try to strike the person, but what if they're ready for that, grab your wrist, and put you in a hold? Unless you are very used to being attacked, your mind will betray you purely from fear, and that is why you need to train your body to react without having to think.
I think that Krav Maga techniques are the best for women to learn. You don't want pretty flourishes and impressive twisting kicks. You want eye gouges, throat chops, stabbing someone in an artery with a cheap pen and kicking their knee in. My friend who is very into hand-to-hand combat got me a small push dagger and also recommends karambits. The push dagger was good because it's small, easy to use (basically put it in your hand and punch someone as many times as it takes), and legal where I am. The karambits are a little trickier with state-by-state legality, but they're easier for someone who is weaker to use, because they require slashing motions, not plunging. They even have some super tiny ones you can tie on a shoe lace as a "last resort" weapon!

I've heard wasp and bear spray too!

I was taught to fight as a kid by my dad so i guess i already have some basic instincts when it comes to self defense and i forget that others might not know simple things. It starts with those things like "wear trainers" though. When i go out if i know i'm going home on my own i always take some flat shoes with me in my purse because yeah, trying to run away in heels won't get you far - if i'm coming home from work i take a full change of clothes so i'm wearing tracksuit and trainers. I walk with my can of body spray/ hairspray etc in one hand, keys in stabbing position in the other (all of these perfectly legal to have on you but capable of causing some damage to someone).
A couple of months ago i was grabbed on my way home from rinks with friends one night and i did break his hold and punched him without thinking, then told a very stunned attacker i'd come fuck him up where he worked (he had recognised me from the local area) if he so much as looked at me ever again - but that's years of instinct, my dad throwing punches at me when i least expected it to toughen me up. Sadly, my dad attacked me a couple of weeks ago too (he has dementia) and i used the same instinct to break his hold (he had me by the throat).
