Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
I am barely keeping my head above water. I have a small fixed monthly non-income and I pretty much scramble my brain and drink to an abyss while I crunch the numbers that is never enough to handle what everyone wants and needs.. Working long hours on webcam and trying to figure out how to invest in my business, save for a rainy day, emergency fund I swear I feel like I am going nuts with it. Plus i've cut back on escorting just couldn't deal with the emotional drain of it all plus the annoying pending prostitution laws looming.
Daily bill collectors call I swear I only get a break from them when my phone bill is over it's spending limit and gets temporarily disconnected. I can never promise them anything consistent and their annoying fake disappointment in their voices is just too much to handle sometimes.
I am trying to figure out how I can manage to pay off some of my debt and see myself moving forward financially this hamster wheel is stressing me out way more then it needs to and I want less things that trigger my bipolar. cause when my bipolar monkey is out no responsibility get taken care of.
With all of us here working doing camming, clips, websites and whatever else - that is considered commission base income we must be able to come up with ideas on how to handle expenses, savings and reinvest into business.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
... the most basic point relates to spending levels versus income levels. Spending levels include a lot of subcomponents ... amounts which must be spent for necessary / minimal costs of living ... amounts which creditors expect you to spend to pay down pre-existing debts ... amounts which are being spent on non-necessity items of any kind.
For better or worse, 'debt service' costs - i.e. the costs of repaying pre-existing debt, interest charges, late fees etc. - can accumulate to the point where it indeed becomes impossible to cover these costs while at the same time covering necessary / minimal costs of living based on the amount of income the person is willing / able to earn. This is the reason that bankruptcy laws exist ... to prevent a lifetime's worth of running on the proverbial hamster wheel.
Fortunately, dancers, camgirls, escorts etc. are in a better position than many people to generate additional income when it is needed.
As far as dealing with the 'inconsistency' of self-employed income, IMHO this is best accomplished by using long term averages and a cash reserve that is sized accordingly. Unfortunately, this starts with maintaining minimal costs of living, avoiding debt, and building an 'emergency fund'. That's extremely hard to do after the fact in the presence of pre-existing debt.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
My advice is not to pay or promise to pay until you get caught up. Because once you enter an agreement you have to stick to it. All of what Melonie said is true. The moment you default on the agreement it's like the clock starts all over again and they make money on the assumption that most will default. When they call you tell them that you are destitute. Some will try and bully you by saying your refusal to pay will be notated in a court of law blah blah blah. Making it appear that you're not cooperating and the call is being recorded. When I had bill collectors calling me for student loans I just said I am not refusing to pay I just cannot pay you at this time. In fact I do not know when I will be able to pay you. And I never got taken to court. They threatened to do so but I just kept repeating what I said. When I got more money I started making payments. Even though you owe the money don't feel bullied into paying them what you don't have.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
If its already in collections or charged off, its still going to sit on your credit report as a derogatory account for 7 years from the date of last activity. Even if you pay it off in full, it still sits there for 7 years as derogatory on your credit report. Someone just had a similar experience here:

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
I know how you feel, I ruined my credit on purpose because I was tired of being on the hamster wheel, I couldn't take it anymore, One day I woke up and realized that I was NEVER going to pay off my credit cards. So I purposely quit paying everything.. I even was getting cash advances for 6 yrs straight.. I had $4500 bucks worth of bills every month and that's about all I was making.. I was way MORE stressed then than I am now and felt so much pressure I thought I was going to die.. So I did the unthinkable, I ruined my credit before it ruined me. Then I got serious!... I started cutting every other expense and trying to live on HALF of my income and saved the rest, Then 3 yrs later I got a secured card. Yes my credit still sucks.. but you know what?? In the last few years.. I got a 2% interest Loan Modification on my mortgage, I was able to pay my car off early, I was able to save 10 grand.. Open a retirement account and other investment accounts.. And now I am just working on getting my credit back.. I did get sued by one company that is local and notorious for suing everyone. A loan I got for a whole house water filtration system.. AND.. My houses equity turned around and now I am sitting at 14 grand positive equity INSTEAD of the negative 60 grand it was during the recession. So what I did was to save my soul... sometimes you gotta to get a fresh start!...In the meantime I have been working on my son's credit while he is going to school fulltime and It's up to 709 now in a year!... good things ahead I HOPE!.. I feel like I just started my life from SCRATCH at 38.... Finally, took the reigns and started living MY life instead of letting others live my life for me.
Also I created a BUDGET that I live and die by. Oh and by the way?? I also just spent 2 grand on a vacation with my kids this year.. so there is hope!

I've already filed bankruptcy once, it gave me a break because at that time I had like almost $50k of debt. Now I am just trying to handle my student loans and my credit card, the over draft from the bank calling is next I will like to add in paying but not on their schedule. Right now I promised my student loan $25 a month but they can be a pain because of how I am getting my non-income never on the same date every month. So I think right now I got 3 creditors calling me regularly everyone doesn't seem to get threw for me to answer the phone. I only answer calls from people who leave me a message or send me a text. so I am in mad screening mode like Maranda.
I know I have to one day get a copy of my credit report and see what is on there, and give myself a starting point of paying off debt eventually but I am not ready yet. I am not ready to face the numbers and notes on my credit report. I am surprised I even gave my credit card $100 payment. what I owe I think it's under $10k I know it's doable and it's not climbing that high.
I just want to build up business first before I figure out debt.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
I have some suggestions that should help. I'm also going through similar situations, no debt calls but bills are behind. Here are some things I'm working on and considering that I have done in the past that has helped me climb out of a hole.
1. getting on daily pay with a studio
2. practice and work on self-discipline
3. stick to a schedule and or make work a priority
4. split cam
5. put yourself on a strict budget
6. stop making excuses
Camming isn't completely dead/dried up. There's a way to make several hundred dollars a day, you just have to expose yourself to them. Once your budget is made up all you have to do is work and cash those checks. Once the money is in your hand you divvy it all up and pay it all down until you owe nothing. If you work 5-7 days a week you will be able to pay your debts down, have savings, and peace of mind. Camming isn't usually inconsistent if you have enough eggs in your basket. The inconsistency usually falls within us cammodels. If you're working 10-12 eggs in your basket and are making hundreds a day, that's as consistent as it's going to get.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Thanks for sharing your story. I did the same thing. I saved a shitload of cash for a bank of America secured cc for the highest amount
Of $5000. I walked in with cash in abag and applied. Got approved and my credit has improved.

I know you have been an inspiration to me and I am currently working on getting more eggs in my basket and am coming up with a plan to slowly learn how to multi-task with them all. <3

I've gone through BR too and went from a 4something credit score thanks to medical bills to 7something in less than 1 year using my method here: . It wasn't a method I invented, but I purchased and read several books, and then experienced trial and error for myself.
TBH, I would just let the credit card go if you owe a ton or its been delinquent for awhile or several times. Because once you miss 1 payment even once, its considered a derogatory account forever if you keep paying it, and then 7 years from the last payment. I mean, if you REALLY want to pay it off, don't pay it for like 6 months or 1 year and they will settle the amount for you by 50% or maybe even 75%. I'm not like, recommending everyone should stop paying their credit cards, but if the damage has already been done, its been done.
As for the student loan, can you go into an income-based repayment program? I would it would depend who the lender is. Is it the gov?
Maybe move somewhere cheaper or get a roommate? I think just identify if you aren't making enough money, or if you have too many expenses. And either yeah just work more (and go back to escorting) or cut your expenses down.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Minnie, here is a really awesome (albeit very hard to follow) piece of advice I got from a crappy little printed E-book called "Simple Wealth" that states this more than anything else.
YOU PAY YOURSELF FIRST. You earned the money. Sure, you owe some companies, and most people owe some entity something at some point. You know what though? There is no such thing as debtor's prison anymore, at least not in the USA. Nobody can haul you off to jail for not paying. Keeping that in mind, those to whom you owe money CAN make your future rather hellish.
Stick to saving something like 10% a month for YOU. Put it in a high yield savings account that takes at least a few days and is a pain in the ass to pull money out of. Really, don't pull anything out of it. It's 10 cents for every dollar you bring home, and I promise, if you truly want to better your situation and improve your overall lifestyle now and for years to come, you will not miss that 10%. After you've dedicated to saving whatever percentage you think you can swing, then you need to figure out what you need to keep your regular, vital bills paid CONSISTENTLY and ON TIME. I'm not going to assume after your vital bills are paid you have much to play around with, but I honestly can't know that in my position. You need to figure out exactly what you can and cannot live with. If you're making money camming, you obviously cannot afford to have your internet (see: livelihood) taken away. Perhaps you can do without going out to eat so much, or whatever your extra spending of choice looks like. Figure out what $ amount you need to keep you relatively happy and sane, and just remember that sometimes you must sacrifice the pleasures of now for the luxuries of later.
Once you've figured out how much you can save, how much is vital to pay out (utilities, auto/home maintenance/insurance, medical, day care, etc.),how much you need to keep your cool, then you see what you can reasonably pay to creditors. Trust me, they want your money, and much of the time they come into collection understanding that they'll never fully recover their money. Make deals. Be really, really sweet. Don't try and sob story them too much, even if you've got the best of them all, because they have heard them all and it only seems to frustrate individual debt collection agents. At that point, their jobs suck so fucking much that they really couldn't care less what happens to you and your starving family. Just be nice, offer them SOMETHING, and do it one debt at a time!
It will take time, Minnie. LOTS of time. But you can do it bit by bit and it IS worth it. Pay off just a few small accounts at a time, and you will see your score increase. God forbid you lose your housing or your transportation, and have too poor a credit history to back you up. keep at it, one bit at a time, and you CAN clear it all up. Don't expect miracles, but aim to make consistent progress. Don't get down if there is an unforeseen event that makes things harder, but always consider that if you do agree to making $X payment on X date, you really had ought to do your best to follow through - there can be legal consequences for not holding up your end of the deal!
You can do it, just keep on trucking, and work as much as possible :)
-
Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Oh, and BTW, I didn't address this, but even with inconsistent income, you can still work out a plan! You'll still know the minimum required bills to pay, still know what will keep you happy and sane, and based on your income in any particular month, you can adjust as needed.

This is so true... especially the part about inconsistency being on us. I don't think any of us like to admit that but I'm find that out, it really is just ME not being consistent and logging on etc.
Good advice. :)

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Hey Minnie,
Can I make some more suggestions?
1. During your down time....you can always do either phone sex, virtual escorting on Second Life, texting, or international adult entertainment consulting. You can always make some extra money off those things.
2. Create a strict budget like KortneyKay said.
3. Do not let creditors scare you.
4.Pay in small amounts until your business pick up.
5. Work at least 5 days a week.
6. You can do some mainstream freelance work such as consulting or becoming a virtual assistant.
7. Try to save as much cash as possible.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Hi Minnie!
I'm in the middle of paying of the last chunk of my CC debt, then working on knocking out my back tax debt (didn't pay taxes last year, shame shame, but I'm fixing it! )
I'm doing the debt snowball plan w/ Dave Ramsey - his debt snowball tool is really awesome, I'd suggest checking it out
http://www.daveramsey.com/article/ge...snowball-plan/
Once you get on a roll working and have worked out a budget it's really easy! And this is coming from a person who looks at the big mountain of crap and goes "Nuh-uh, Hell no." lol.
I understand where you're coming from because I was there feeling like it was impossible and "God I'm never going to get out of this hole I'm in." But you need to start shoveling yourself out or you'll just keep getting buried. Even paying off $100 on a credit card feels good - because you're getting a step towards debt free :) AND stress free living. It's hard at first but once you keep at it, it all snowballs :)
Have you thought about credit counseling? I have a vanilla friend who got so swamped with her CC debt she went through a non-profit and they're helping her with her credit. This is what she uses. http://www.nfcc.org/index.cfm
You pay the credit counseling company a big lump sum - then they divide to your creditors so you don't even have to worry about that. http://www.nfcc.org/CreditCounseling/faq.cfm <--- FAQ.

I did the same thing before i got into camming so many things were never paid off old bills from my old place a court case settlement that was total bullshit etc so when i looked up my credit report and saw so many things that on there and the rate I'm going to be able to actually be in a good place to pay them off i realized that it would probably be better for me if i just 7 yeared it and waited for that stuff to fall off. Right now I'm working on paying back my taxes for this year and last year then i have 12K student loan to pay off (8K got turned 12 from interest so i'm hoping they can work with me on taking most of it off after i start repaying them again). With the money that I'm making now it does seem a bit daunting . Speaking as as far as my taxes go the more I earn the more I owe and its like 2 steps forward one back. But I know I just to push longer and maybe split with a different site because I'm doing SM and MFC right now.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
^^ yea when that company that i borrowed money from to get a water filtration system sued me.. I originally owed 6 grand and paid on it for 3 yrs at 65 bucks a month.. when they sued me they said I had to pay 9 grand.. fucking bullshit I say.. I only borrowed 6 and I paid faithfully for 3 yrs.
You can ALWAYS find more things that are tax deductible, Do a google search.. like maybe set up a SEP IRA or something... etc etc.. then you won't owe as much... find ways NOT to pay taxes legally. I am working on trying to buy my 2nd piece of property so I will own 2.. and of course it will be deductible.. whether I earn money off of it or live in it.. I am not sure if i want to move up to a bigger house or get a duplex to rent out.. either way i will be renting out.. with property mgmt of course!..lol

oh my!... I am a member of Legal Shield.. so if i have any legal issues I can just call them up. I have been with them over 2 yrs and called them up several times, haven't needed legal counsel per se yet, my whole family has it cuz my brother sells it...LOL.. it's 17 bucks per month for some peace of mind.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Hi Minnie!
I'm going through a similar situation, but I've been steadily paying down my debt while saving money. Here's what I've done:
1. DAILY PAY. Even though they take more out of your paycheck, it's convenient for those in debt because you'll never really be broke. You can dry out your bank account and pay off a debt if you have the assurance that you will be paid the next day. (As long as you make the minimum.)
2. Vanilla work. Everyone is different and not everyone wants to work two jobs. But hey, it's totally helping my situation. I'm a waitress during the day, and a sex worker by night. The tips everyday are great, you get free food usually, and you're not out spending money! Plus, you get to socialize with others. It's not that bad of an idea, and it's an extra paycheck.
3. Budgeting is super important. Lets say you decide to work vanilla AND cam/clips/etc. If you're making 100-200 from vanilla and X amount from adult work, you can pretty much use your vanilla paycheck for daily living and adult work income for bills. You will obviously make more from the adult work.
Aside from taxes, I put 10% of my weekly income into a savings account.
4. Still enjoy yourself, but MINIMALLY. Honestly? Until I'm out of my hole, I've accepted the fact that I have to stay home all the time and watch TV. Or hike. Or play a sport. Free things. I splurge $20.00 on myself every week and it's usually an article of clothing. Only until this debt is gone, which at this rate, should be gone within the next 4 months.
5. Work hard, no excuses! Self explanatory. Stop drowning out your sorrows and "woe is me, i'm broke." Work to NOT be broke. You didn't hit your hourly goal? Try again the next hour. And the next. If you work 6-8 hours a day and don't make a single dime, chances are, you caught somebodies interest and they will be returning to give you money another day.
Debt is obviously not a fun thing to deal with, but it should teach you better money management skills for the future. I'm happy I'm in debt NOW and not when I'm settled down. Good luck to you, Min.

That is the problem with debt. Its easy for people to say "just make a payment on it every month even if its a small one!" but in reality, that is not always a good idea because a.) they can keep increasing the interest rate, b.) they can keep increasing "penalty fees", and c.) they can still sue you for whatever amount they please regardless of how much you've paid or how often you're making payments. Especially if you have ever paid late once, the account will eternally remain derogatory even after its paid, for 7 years.
Sometimes its just better to stop paying the debt entirely, and then settle with them accepting a small fraction of the original debt amount for the account to be considered paid off. Or sometimes its better sending a "pay for delete" letter once you have saved up the payoff amount in full. Sometimes, and often times, making payments does nothing but get you into trouble once you have missed 1-3 payments ever on the account.

Yes, its very scary because creditors can literally make up any rules about interest or fees that they want to. If its not in the contract (and contacts, I guarantee you, are written to make it seem like its in your favor but its NOT) doesn't state anything about it, they can make it up as they please.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
^^ yea they sued me and got a judgement .. I pay a flat rate of 6% interest. I ignored them like I ignore all the other creditors and they are the only ones who sued me but they also sue everyone else...LOL.... I have paid off over 2 grand of that 9,000 bucks.. i tried to negotiate it down but they said NOPE.. Either you pay this or we will garnish your bank account.. You see I had no choice!.. They froze my bank account to get their money.. And this is when I learned to keep a BUNCH of money at home also in a safe.. JUST IN CASE!.. so that if ANYONE ever does that to me again.. I can immediately fix my problem. I would suggest everyone to do the same.. you never know when you need ALOT of cash on hand.. I keep a majority of my money in the banks naturally though...

Yeah that sometimes happens, but rarely. And usually only smaller companies. Like major creditors don't do that unless the amount is over 30k. That's what my lawyer was telling me at my BR hearing because there actually was a creditor that showed up to the meeting of the creditors, and she said it is extremely rare.
Yeah and then when they sue you, it goes as a judgment so you def have to pay it or they garnish :(

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
with my situation i knew about the late days fee but she told me i could pay it late then went back on verbal word and started charging me the late days because of this i knew i didnt have a leg to stand on in court witch is why i chose not to go and sleep in for the concert. re-reading that post i think it was unclear what i was saying so i wanted to make it a point so explain that part of me knowing the late day fee part of the rental contract.

Re: Is it worth paying off debt with inconsistent income
Damn glad I live in Texas! The laws here are very consumer friendly, it's very difficult for a creditor to get a judgment against you here and can not garnish wages or bank accounts (except child support debt) so even with a judgment collecting on it can be pointless effort and added cost for the creditor so they really don't even bother to sue here (according to my federal law professor who was an attorney for creditors before teaching).
Always remember to check your own state laws because laws regarding debt, and pretty much everything else, vary greatly from state to state.
