Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
Would it be possible to just dance with my normal hair and then get a weave when I have the money? I know I'm ready to get out there but this is really the only thing holding me back. I literally have no money to spare for the right shoes or hair. I was thinking about grabbing my civilian heels and picking out my fro and giving it a go.
Black damcers: Is it ever OK to dance with natural hair? I'm itching to get in but don't want to waste what little money I have visiting a club and getting turned away.
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
You can, when I first went back to dancing I tried my natural kinky hair in a braid out or would get my hair blown out by the dominicans for 20 bucks and while I would do ok with(it was shoulder length) its nothing compared to what i made when I put the 20 inch remi in my hair! But I did do wayyyyyy better though with my real hair straight vs my hair in its natural state which sucks because im pro black all day. So i say spend 20-30 buck depending where you live and just get it blown out, straight hair ALWAYS makes more even with black men.
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
Thanks! I've got a few dollars I can put into getting a blow out. I know I've got the body and all, and I know how this industry is. I just needed someone to tell me before I jumped the gun.
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
I dance with a huge ass afro, and it's actually helped me in terms of bringing in customers. Though there are plenty of Black dancers at our club, at any given time, it's likely that most dancers present will be white. Even on the rare occasions that there are more Black dancers present than white ones, most of the Black dancers opt to straighten their hair or wear straight extensions. Having a big afro really helps me stand out, and it draws a lot of attention while I walk through the club, even if it's just so much as a curious glance.
I use that to my advantage. Most of the patrons we get are white, and if they're open to a Black dancer, then they'll go crazy for natural hair. I've had a lot of customers tell me that that was the reason they wanted me to be the one keeping them company. It's either the whole "your hair is so big" thing that attracts them, or it's the "Black women are gorgeous, especially when they wear their hair natural like you." or "I've always loved a woman with natural hair."
I was shocked because I was terrified to walk in there like that when everybody had their hair straight. I say give it a try, because standing out is good in a club, and natural hair is more appealing to men than the media would have you think. (And, it's less damage all around! Everybody wins, haha.)
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
Im glad i ran along this thread. Ive danced in 24inch raw virgin extensions, my real hair straightened down my shoulders nd back.
Only thing i hate about sew ins is the fact i have to constantly straighten my leave out nd edges (i damaged my edges, its not really bad but they arent as long as they used to be, but u cant tell becausr my hair is long and REALLY thick), i hate straightening my haur because i have to straighten it EVERY time im done dancing.
This winter im getting a long kinky twist mohawk that goes all the way down to my butt. I want it to stand out, and to protect my real hair. I have to much hair to be styling everyday. Plus i can save money on my weaves, which were running $900+ every 3-4 months.

A kinky twist mohawk sounds so pretty!! Im thinking about a short relaxed cut I saw online. Its just tough because I am so broke right now. Im hoping to land a gig somehwere just to pay for my hair and then hopefully get in the club before it gets too cold over here. Im also fearful of weave maintenance and how expensive it will be. I was also thinking just some regular braids or something too. I just want it to be long!
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
900 on weaves?! thats crazy lol. But if youre cute you can definitely rock braids! Ive seen a couple of girls rock the braid looks and they banked but they both were very pretty. When I start back dancing im gonna alternate bw lace wigs and braids.

900 is steep. I started wearing raw virgin hair in highschool. Ordered hair from indian vendor. The hair lasts 3+ years. Women spend 200+ everyother month on beauty supply hair 1200+ a year. I wore my hair i ordered for $700 for 2.5 years. Thats about 23 a month. It was cheaper in my book, plus better quality. Then i got greedy and started switching up lengths and colors to often lol.
And yes im a natural kinky/curly/course haired girl. So instead of dancing with super long weaves (that eventually got super annoying to me) i want to try out a protective style thats sexy and less maintanence.
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
I'm getting tired of sew-ins, I'm seeing more stylists making wigs, I'm going to go that route. I found a stylist who will take the hair I buy, put it on a cap that is sized to my head, then when I go to pick it up she will put it on me and cut and frame it to my face shape. I don't like taking wigs off and on everyday, so I'm going to have it sewn down, but at least I can remove it and take care of my real hair every 2,3 weeks.
So that's my plan.
Which Indian hair vendors are you ladies using?
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
Fallyn, I love the sound of your Mohawk. I wish I had the confidence to rock something like that.
Sweetcrush, a Afro May or may not work. These clubs have way too many variables with customer base, etcetera. You might could get it to work, but if too many custies aren't receptive then it will hurt your pocket. I believe in a feast or famine situation, go with what's safe. When you stack some cash, then give it a try to see if you get positive or negative results. I know I've seen such awful hairdos (meaning the ghetto pineapples or crunchy, crispy immoveable dos) on dancers, but they still get paid. I really thought maybe men's eyes don't make it up that high. In certain cities, the guys just deal with it. In others, you'll get passed over.
My vote is- if you can afford it, get a blowout. When your situation is better, try the Afro so you'll know. If you can't afford it- go in with a fro like you own that bitch!

I decided to switch to s natural stylr because my favorite vendor is closing. WAGMANS. I wear raw virgin hair (cut straight from the scalp sewn on a weft nd i had to clean it myself. Most people dont know REAL virgin hair. But most ppl cant stomache having to clean REAL hair but i loved it. I still have extensions from 3-4 years ago i can wear.
I will pm a vendor that i will be using next.
And u knoe what i love ur idea of rocking wigs. Ive seen some bad ass lace fronts and wigs that u cant tell is a wig. Im just scared of the hairline lol.
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
No lace front for me!!! Oh no lol
I stick to bangs so I circumvent that whole issue. Even with deep curly hair I get some hair in my face. I only use straight when I get a bob. No more 26" body wave for me. It looks great on many of us, and most guys love the long hair but when I'm out and about I feel phony in a way. So it's deep curly/kinky curl for me until I'm ready to give it up.

Have you installed any deep/kinky hair? Ive always wondered about this because I know it will look just like my own hair, but Im scared of tangling and matting.

Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
SweetCrush, It's on it's way to me right now. I've had the looser curly hair in my head, but after a while I realized it was still too silly for the look I wanted. I ordered deep curly last week so I'll have it installed soon.
I haven't done the kinky curl yet because it's more than my pockets can manage at the time! I do plan on getting it as soon as I can afford it. I don't want to skimp on quality with this kind of hair because I feel that if the hair is no good and it goes bad- it'll really look bad.
Everyone with kinky curly complains of maintenance. If you're the type to just lay in bed and fall asleep with your hair loose, you'll have to change that. I'm fanatic about braids or twists before bed. As a matter of fact I do it the same time I wash my face at night and do my oil pulling. Killing three birds with one stone!
So braiding it up when at home, and keeping it moisturized, using a deman or similar brush to keep tangles away will certainly help.
Ugh! You have me wishing I ordered kinky cult instead! LOL
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
I would love to see the hair once you get it, if you don't mind. I used to be pretty lazy when it comes to hair maintenance but I'm still trying to find the best products for my hair. I also got a call back about a vanilla job so money should be coming in soon (thank gawd!)
I've always been concerned with the shine/silkyness of the weave not matching my own low luster hair, so I'm glad they're other options (for a little more money)
I'm about to just say fuck it and get some braids and cross my heels I get hired at a club.
Re: Black Dancers: Natural or Weave?
There's a girl at my club that rocks her natural hair, everytime she goes on stage guys cant help but stare at her watch. She just commands attention, its really sexy to watch. Once she's off the stage, she's gone to VIP.
If you have the confidence I would say do it, but thats what you need to make it work straight up CONFIDENCE - like you're better than Beyonce/KimKardashian/JLO shit.
