American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I feel weird about dancing on Sept 11th. I don't want a political anniversary to ruin my money-making plans for this month, but I would still feel strange about working that day. Anyone plan on working that day? Is it even worth it to work on that day? :-\

I might avoid it if you live in NYC or maybe DC. I live in NYC and I'm not sure how I feel about going in. But elsewhere it shouldn't affect your money.

I dunno I think that's over thinking.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I hate seeing the clips of 911 being played, if they happen to leave certain tvs on a news channel. Puts a damper for sure!!

just realized i'm scheduled on the 11th! so i have to work either way..wonder if it will be dead because people might think its inappropriate to go out clubbing on the anniversary of a tragic event..maybe it is inappropriate , bla i might find cover

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I worked in upstate NY for 5 years of my career. Nobody noticed 911 up there. You should be fine Simone. The biggest concerns are whether your customer base will stay with loved ones that day, or if you'd rather do the same.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I would definitely not work on 9/11 in NYC. Incidentally I worked the same day as the Boston bombings and the club was DEAD. And the TVs played what was going on in Boston over and over. I'm sure it rattled people up.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
Well I work in a club 10 min from Manhattan and am scheduled to work Dayshift that day, I just always work Thursdays but now I'm wondering if it's going to be dead as a door nail.

You know the temperature of your city better than we do.

For those in the DC area, the Navy Yard shooting anniversary is coming up as well.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I think enough time has passed that most people don't think about it all that much. Well maybe NYC or in Wa D.C. it is still important. But aside from that, most places in the US have mostly moved on.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
It's fine to work that day. I don't remember it being dead for the last couple years. Just make sure there aren't any news channels on the tv.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I think I worked it last year but I'm far from NYC. Do you have to schedule yourself? If not, you can always check out nearby nightlife spots to see how they're doing before heading in. If they seem decent, try working.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I was in college and dancing on 9/11/01. I remember the overwhelming sadness, the fear and most of all the heroism. Each 9/11, I choose to think about the heroes.

Just found out I have an audition.
Update: Date was pushed back.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I think I'm going to work on the 11th. It's been 13 years, and I'm not in NY. My club does have alot of TV's, like everywhere! But hopefully it will be a good money day. I guess every day of the year is a potential tragic anniversary for someone because tragic things happen everyday. I still feel weird about it, but maybe I am over-thinking it.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I work in NYC, and I wouldn't be overly concerned about working if you're in a relatively busy club. You'll still get tourists and the like. Actually, I was in financial district last year on 9/11 and it was basically a huge party... Very strange, but all the local bars were filled with family members of those who died and they were sharing memories. I could definitely see some of them hitting up clubs afterwards. That said, if you're personally uncomfortable working on that day, then don't do it. $$ is never worth your comfort.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I kind of feel bad now for not even thinking of it.
I'm not scheduled to work so I won't be, but damn. It never even crossed my mind. Now I'm wondering if I worked it last year.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
Haha, this made me check my calendar of earnings for last year. It appears I was working at a mid-tier sports bar-like club and I made like $120. Not too bad BC 9/11 was on a Wed last year and the rest of my week was good.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
For those just concerned about $$.. My club in Manhattan was busy and people were throwing around good money after midnight (so technically on the 11th). I really don't think the money will be awful in this town tomorrow. And definitely not anywhere else, at least not for this reason.

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
I worked tonight (9/11) and it was an ok night. Not terribly packed, but not slow either. I didn't even care about the date, I just worked as usual. :)

Re: American dancers, feel weird dancing on 9/11?
Yes, my club was pretty normal for a Thursday. Thankfully the TVs weren't playing news coverage.

Yep, I didn't even think about the fact that I was working on 9/11 yesterday until I was dancing for some guy and over his shoulder I could see footage from the Twin Towers being played on TV. I was like, wtf, seems like the club should have had the good sense to put on a different channel. Luckily my guy wasn't facing the TVs.
Overall, it didn't seem to affect my money at all. I made more than I was expecting to on a Thursday, really.
