I know I'm a little late, but Michele, I'm really sorry you're going through this. I broke my right arm when I was a kid, due to a bike accident. I then broke my left arm in another stupid accident several years later. Both times were fractures. It was in the 90's, so I'm not sure if the casts are improved now and enable faster healing. But I was in an arm cast for at least 6 weeks. Not sure exactly how long because it was so long ago. But I would suggest NOT trying to grip anything with that arm for several days. It's going to cause more and more swelling if you do. The point of having a cast is to protect it, support it, and keep it in place so that the bones grow back together as evenly as possible. If you try to move your arm, wrist, or fingers too frequently, you might be doing damage to that arm, when it needs to be resting.
Also, what does it smell like? It might be normal and nothing to worry about. When I got my cast taken off, it smelled kind of stale. The doctor said it was normal. You can't wash the skin inside the cast, so you're just going to have to wait until it gets taken off to wash that arm completely.
Take calcium pills for faster healing. And glucosamine sulfate pills for your wrist.
