instagram's creepy photo map turning itself on
so, i made a mistake that i figured other girls are also probably making.
turn location services off for instagram
i have a personal IG and a camming IG. i had location services on, so i could tag my locations on my personal account while on vacation.
i figured if i never clicked "add a location" on my camming account, that no locations would ever pop up.
WRONG!
instagram has a "photomap" feature where they show exactly where you uploaded that picture. you can see where i was in my HOUSE.
i did not select "add to photomap" for any of my pictures, but for some reason-- instagram enabled this for 3 random pictures of mine. a client let me know... they'd been up for a month.
i'm assuming instagram does this to encourage folks to use the feature, but it's beyond messed up. biggest safety concern i can think of. luckily im moving out of state, but not for another 8 months...
why anyone would want the photomap is beyond me. i don't know when this started but i saw that it was happening a lot on my personal account too, and on all my friends' accounts-- none of them knew about it either.
Re: instagram's creepy photo map turning itself on
If you have 2 accounts on the same website, the website will know it's you (because you're using the same IP address) and sometimes blends the settings. This is why it's important to always log out every time and consider using a virtual private network or other measures that can help conceal your privacy.
So glad someone helped you out by informing you of this before anything negative happened.
Re: instagram's creepy photo map turning itself on
It has never turned itself on for me, fortunately, but I do check multiple times a week just incase. I also check to make sure it isn't linking up with my personal facebook account.
On that note, I've also learned with iphones, to turn the location services for your camera off. otherwise, there's some way they can find your location from there too if you're posting from your camera phone. Don't know about android, if you have one, but I'm sure it works similarly in that you turn it off through settings.
