Hair Color - Going Gray/White
So this is completely random...I know, but My hair is going salt/pepper. I don't want to just re-color it like the rest of My hair. I was thinking how cool would it be to color just the white/gray hairs some really cool color...like purple, hot pink, blue, or whatever I'm in the mood for. My natural hair is black, btw. That might make what I'm trying to achieve easier, perhaps?
I've been googling to see if it's possible without finding anything that will be of any value...maybe My search terms suck...and then thought why not ask the ladies on SW to see if any of you have successfully done it. I live in South America so I'm hoping to find out if anyone knows the developer strength to use or if there's anything special that needs to be done so all the "normal" hair that I don't want colored (what's still black) doesn't take color. Then, I could make sure whatever salon I go to is doing the processing properly.
TIA :)
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
Premature gray hair runs in my family. My 'answer' was to go totally platinum blonde ... which then allowed me to create a huge camera contrast versus other colors ...

Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
I am a bit confused. Most dyes you can buy just make sure they offer grey coverage? I'm slowly going grey early too (salt and pepper currently) I'm able to cover with most dyes. If anything maybe just different colored hair chalk that just washes out?
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
platinum blonde would be cool, but I have dark skin and black hair (half spaniard/half persian)...that would just look bad on Me. hoping there is a way to do what I want...I think it would look so cool
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
I think what you are looking for is a color gloss treatment. It is a semi permanent treatment that stains grey but leaves natural hair more shiny. Not sure if it comes in novelty colors like hot pink or blue. Maybe Manic Panic?
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
If you want to cover gray completely, use an additive called Gray Magic..avail. @ Sally's.

OK SORRY ABOUT THE SIZE but I don't know how to make them small.
Those photos are recent and totally natural. I have really prominent grey hair with an obvious mallen streak so I do feel your pain. I don't advise going all over grey/silver/white because even though it look super cool and really sexy, only people who are naturally fair haired can really pull it off. Girls who have naturally dark hair like us would need to bleach our hair first before dying, and this can take a lot of upkeep and maitenence. It's not just grey, that's the same for any brash colour, like hot pink or blue.
I get what you mean about only dying the grey bits though, but wouldn't this be very fiddly? Is it all grey or patchy? Is it easy to pick out the grey bits? It still sseems like a lot of work and patience over a long period of time to carry it off. How long do you think it would be before it was all grown out and all silver?
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
Semipemanent vegetable dyes will do that. (Manic Panic is one brand, as Hyori suggested). If your gray is resistant to color you may need to try different brands or shades to find one that works and you have to leave it on a long time to get it to take and sometimes apply heat by covering your hair with a plastic cap and aiming a blowdryer on it. It will leave your hair mostly undamaged unlike peroxide colors.
You don't use developer with this type of dye since it only overlays the hair and doesn't permanently change it.
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
I'll definitely look into those. I have never dyed a single gray hair on My head yet. It's salt and peppered throughout, but I really only notice it around My temples and bangs. It's enough to be bothersome for Me. I can't see it when I'm on cam (skype or otherwise)...but I just don't like it. I thought that I could be a rebel, but I'm not jiving with it after a few years in.
I guess what I was hoping for was that when I stuck whatever color dye in My hair, the gray/white hairs would just absorb the color quickly and the rest of My naturally black hair wouldn't take the color. I thought if I just bought pink hair dye and stick it all over My head for 20 minutes and washed it out, My white/gray hair would turn pink and the rest of My hair would still be black...sigh...I didn't realize that gray/white hairs were more resistant to taking color. I don't dye My hair...it's about as virgin as it gets *hehehe* I don't ever use straighteners, blow dryers, or heat...just shampoo/conditioner/leave-in conditioner/and gel
I am soooo sooo soooooo glad I asked here before embarking on My crazy color dye experiment on My own. Thanks ladies...this manic panic looks pretty cool :)
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
Good luck. I haven't found a dye yet that actually works on my (white!) greys!
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
I'm super into natural stuff so I'm going to try My leave-in conditioner mixed with some instant coffee, let it sit for an hour or two and see how that works. I might try it with some beet juice or something else brightly colored...or maybe some henna with cocoa/indigo...if that doesn't work, I'm all over that manic panic. So many options! Main thing is to stay away from crazy chemicals that will make My hair even more coarse than it already is...and these freaking white/gray hairs, I swear I could pull them out, tie them to a kite, and fly one!
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
smelling like a human mochaccino (with WHITE hairs) after doing one of those homemade coffee/cocoa hair dye recipes...should've known!
I think I'm going to try one of those henna things since it's supposed to be very good for hair, conditioning it and coloring it at the same time.
Re: Hair Color - Going Gray/White
Grey/white hair is naturally resistant to dye.
