I don't have any experience with Asus or Acer, but out of the two I'd probably go with the Acer Aspire V Nitro because it specifies that you can watch Blu-Ray movies, where the Asus only allows you to watch DVDs. Both laptops are very similar, so I had to really pay close attention to find something to set one apart from the other. Lol. The difference in display sizes and laptop weights wouldn't make much difference to me either.
I remember - on my previous laptop - attempting to watch one of the Rocky movies (which happened to be on Blu-Ray), and wondering why the hell my laptop wouldn't recognize the disc. Took me a minute to realize it's because it was a Blu-Ray disc, and my previous laptop didn't play Blu-Ray discs. It only played DVDs and CDs.
The Asus is exactly the laptop I just got last Friday and so far I love it.
I've had three Acer laptops including one I bought at the beginning of the year and took back the next day. They are priced well and get great reviews online but IME they always SUCK. I suggest avoiding Acer.
They are both a lot more than I would be willing to spend in a laptop (i use a desktop). Specs look good for both, and are pretty similar. I would go for tye one with the larger screen as it will make splitting etc easier. X
The asus x
I just got the same asus except for a few hundred dollars cheaper on Amazon (total was like 1,200 with an addition of a samsung SSD). It is sooooooooo amazing, so fast, it can handle anything. It fully boots in like 3 seconds. It improved my placement on sm DRASTICALLY! Basically can't say enough good things about it, I would highly recommend! My only complaint is it gets very hot, mostly when my Bf plays NBA 2k on it, lol. and the sound from the built-in speakers is very tinny and sounds cheap. But it's a great computer, fastest I have ever used.
I've had an asus and it was a great laptop but my only concern was there are a few bad reviews on hsn's website:( I am returning another laptop that I just bought from hsn a month and a half ago because the task bar kept freezing on me. I couldn't even get task manager to come up. I would have to manually turn off the computer by pushing the power button. This is the one that I am returning now:

Asus was my first laptop (actually a netbook) that I used to cam. I even used the built in webcam.
I'm now using a Gateway i7 quad core 15 inch, which I love.
A cooling fan is a must, as the computer tend to get very hot.
