Best state to live in weather wise
So my family and I are contemplating moving within the next year or two. We currently live in upstate NY, and I personally have never really liked it. Aside from the cold, snowy winters and summers that are too short, I find it to be very blah living here. My parents are getting sick of how cold it gets, and want to move somewhere warmer. Here's the thing; we want to move somewhere with nice year round weather that isn't too extreme. The deep south (like Florida) gets too hot and humid, and they have to deal with hurricanes and all that crap. I heard the southwest gets waaayyyy too hot (i.e Arizona and Nevada) and I don't care if its dry heat, I'm still roasting and sweating my ass off! I was in Las Vegas once in August and couldn't tolerate how hot it was. So we are looking for somewhere that is mild. Some areas we're considering are Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and around the D.C area. I also heard Southern Utah is decent for year round weather, as well as Southern Colorado and New Mexico. I know California is beautiful, but it's way too expensive to live there and the traffic is terrible (plus they get earthquakes). Does anyone have any recommendations based on what I've mentioned? Is anyone familiar with living in the states we are considering moving to? Feel free to add any suggestions. Thanks ahead of time!

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
On the East Coast, the middle to southern part of NC (including Charlotte) is probably about as close as you're going to get to decent year round weather. DC, MD and parts of VA still get their fair share of bad winter weather, though of course nothing like northern NY.
The problem is that there really is no perfect answer on the East Coast because the temps swing so dramatically from winter lows to summer highs. If you live anyplace with moderately mild winters and little to no snow, you are going to pay for it with a bit of heat and humidity in the summer. The West Coast has an unusual thing going on with the Pacific Ocean currents and winds, which cool things off in the summer and warm them up in the winter. I'll let others opine on whether those unique conditions can be found elsewhere, but not to my knowledge.
Good hunting!

If you can handle the rain, the Pacific Northwest has a very temperate climate, specifically west of the mountains.

I'm in Maryland, and ready for it to CONSISTENTLY start feeling like springtime! I'm so done with this back and forth BS. It's been springtime for almost a month now, yet it's been feeling more like fall and winter lately. :( I mean, we've been getting "freeze watch" alerts popping up on the TV...in APRIL! The other day it was in the 30s and 40s. I think this afternoon it was in the 50s and got up into the early 60s.
This blizzard we had back in January caused the roof to a grocery store to collapse.

You definitely don't want to be moving to Alabama unless you like dealing with these things...

With global warming, it's hard to say where it's even decent anymore?

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
Thank you everyone for all your suggestions so far! It seems like NC is my best bet from what I'm gathering...and maybe parts of Virginia since it borders NC. Someone mentioned the Pacific Northwest, I'm thinking of Oregon...does OR get snowy winters?

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
For what you're describing, North Carolina could be great. (looks like I'm not the only one who suggested it!)
The wealthier / more financially stable cities there are Raleigh and Durham. My father lives there. In fact, I was just there a week ago...it's gorgeous. Even flying in to RDU, you can see that the landscape is coated in trees. It's a very green area with fairly mild seasons. I'd never give up the PNW for North Carolina, but if I had to move, that's where I'd be looking.
OR rarely gets snow. The winters tend to be cloudy / rainy (but nowhere nearly as rainy as the natives will lead you to believe - they get sun here during the winter!). And the summers are warm and dry. There are no mosquitoes...! Stable economy, great people, high cost of living. I am obsessed with moody, grey, rainy weather; even the PNW isn't nearly as rainy / cloudy as I'd hoped it would be!
If you're looking to stay away from extremes, NC is your best bet for sure.

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
I vote for Charlotte,NC large city and affordable. It also has a growing job market for the tech industry and large companies. We looked at Charlotte when house hunting. But we actually love cold weather and wanted to be closer to NYC. But NC and Virginia are great. Four seasons Mountains,Cities and The Beach. And they still have that Southern Charm. However Va can be very conservative, keep that in mind.

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
Oh yes. Move to Hawaii. The weather is fucking perfect year round. I swear they have subliminal messages in their Hawaiian music telling everyone to move there. And tbh, if you choose to live on the Big Island, it's really not too expensive. Maybe Kauai too. On Oahu or Maui, forget about it, it's expensive as fuck.
WA is wonderful. I used to live in an adorable college town called Bellingham close to the border and it got significantly less rain than Seattle. It was real close to Vancouver and super liberal so it was practically Canada. If you like outdoorsey stuff (including whale watching), you'd love that area.
If you cam, you can live anywhere (with internet)! Probably the best part of the job.

Oh, yeah! I meant to mention Hawaii to you. It's amazing! And money isn't a huge issue for you. California really has the best weather. Again, since money isn't a huge issue for you, I'd strongly recommend it. I think you might be disappointed with the other states you were interested in when I messages you. I think CA will be the only state that can really measure up to what you're looking for. Having gotten to know you a bit.

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
Thanks again for all the suggestions everyone! As of now, I've narrowed it down between two places: Virginia (east coast) and California (west coast), I really love the Williamsburg and Virginia Beach areas of Virginia, and I know that part of the state doesn't get too much bad weather (I think they just missed the brutal snow storm last January).
I have always loved the state of California and after doing some research, I've found that there are many good areas that are easier and enjoyable to live in (like Riverside and Ventura counties, and the northern parts like Sacramento and Redding). So I will keep you all updated as to which state we decide on! My family and I are going to be doing a lot of traveling this spring and summer and hopefully by June we will have made our final decision. We are planning a trip to Virginia at the end of May and hopefully Cali during mid June :)

I lived in SC and I loved it! With your criteria, I think NC would be lovely.

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
Southern OR or NorCal are both excellent options. as long as you stay near the coast, you wont have much (or any) snow most winters, minimal humidity, and it'll be cheaper than NY (especially once you factor in property tax).

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
San Francisco has the best weather. Occasional fog, but never too cold or too hot. Weather has been improving a lot these past years too. Less fog, more sun. But yea I pay $1700 for a studio the size of a bedroom ugh...Which is actually a pretty good deal lol. Sacramento has cheap rent but the summers get pretty hot.

Truer words were never spoken.
Esp socal. (I type this as I have 3 fans blowing on me, at night, and it's only April.)
90 degrees in winter, more humidity than ever before.. And the people... Ugh!
Live here at your own risk.
Unless you want to feel like you're living in an overpriced Equator.

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
I live in California and cannot recommend it. It is verrrry hot here now in the summers, the past five years have seen quite a shift in climate all over the state. It really only cools off now for a few days when it rains, but El Nino doesn't come every year. No El Nino, no rain. In the mid-80s today, and it's only April.
Would definitely pick the mid-Atlantic if I were you. I believe I'll be moving to the East Coast next year myself (not because of climate ... well, mostly not).

I always found SF to be too cold. I grew up southeast of there & it's usually hot. Even in December. Keep that in mind. lol

Re: Best state to live in weather wise
*Update* My mother and I are taking a road trip to Virginia Beach next week and we will head to Williamsburg from there for the day to check everything out. I'm so excited!! I will let you all know how it goes :) We are also planning a trip to Northern Cali in mid June.

I think Northern California is too cold too. And I've been there a lot recently.
One of my favorite lines ever is a Mark Twain line about San Francisco. ***** The coldest winter I ever had was a summer in San Francisco. ( I don't think that's verbatim).
