Worth it for part time extra income?
Hi gals,
I've been tossing the idea of webcamming around for months now and have decided to seriously consider it. I desperately need the extra income. However, I can only cam for a few hours on weekend nights, and also won't be promoting myself as I cannot risk being found out.
I'm a young redhead with a naturally fit but curvy body and an outgoing personality. If I stick with it at least every weekend, what are my chances of actually making good money, like over $50 an hour?
I really want to do this, but don't want to put my body out there for $20 a night ya know?
Thx

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
If u absolutely cant risk being found out, dont. If it could affect future career goals, destroy ur family life, or if u couldnt live w the last person u want to find out finding out, dont!
Like many others have said on here the chances of being found out are only increasing as facial recognition software becomes more common. U will also have to pay taxes on the money u earn which means in one way or another ur name will always be linked to camming, if someone really wants to get dirt on u.
I am comfortable camming because it wont prevent me from using the 2 degrees ill be earning next spring, because i have made peace with the idea of someday being outed to someone i dont want to know, and everyone close to me is supportive of it. and I STILL deal with the paranoia of wondering if anyone i know has secretly found me out, or what if i got a crazy custie turned stalker. Its no joke. I also gave up the idea of ever working with kids in the future, bcuz camming is worth it to me.
It took me a 6 months and lots of $$$ invested, lots of hours spent promoting to consistently make $20-30/hr (might be different if u focus on token sites, but still). If u arent comfortable with only earning $20/night some nights and puttting urself out there for that amount, how will u feel at a $2.50 night? Cuz those happen and it sucks, esp if u are risking a lot by camming. Yes there are $100/hr nights too, but u have to really be a self motivating person to keep at it thru all the disappointments.

Think of it this way.......if instead of camming you had decided to sell Avon or Mary Kay cosmetics do you think that you would be able to average $50 an hour only working for a few hours on weekend nights?
Camming is a commission-based job like any other.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
I agree with the above, it took a good 4 to 6 months and lots of invested time to set my "business" up to finally start making good making.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
So essentially, no, I won't make good money unless I have a regular schedule and promote on some sort of social media?
I'm not too worried about being found out just camming, but I feel like a Twitter or something would make that more possible.
I mean, you are essentially selling your body, and for that you should get paid well or not do it. You should at least make more than selling Mary kay. I thought that was the draw towards web camming, that you get paid pretty well, but reading through this forum it doesn't really seem that way unless you really promote yourself. I understand that, I'm sure the market is saturated, and youporn.com is free!

You can make money being on a cam site and not advertising yourself outside of the site, just that the days for might be slower then some. but there is no way of knowing that because everyone's results are extremely difficult.
Results are not typical because you are not typical cam sites really need to say this . Mary Kay has to say this because they are regulated under the FTC and there are millionaire earners in Mary Kay. Plus that business models operates A LOT different then camming on so many levels that can be a whole topic all on it's own.
You won't know what is going to happen until you start. If you are in the US you will get a 1099 from most cam sites,
Yes they improving technology on everything that doesn't stop people from flying, applying for jobs and living their lives.

I honestly think not having regular hours would hurt u more than not promoting on twitter or w/e. I don't see all that much income from twitter, random Skype shows and stuff. But I think it'd be hard to make consistently good income, without being consistent. Some wks I only make good $ on one night out of the 6 nights i work.
The $$$ isn't the only reason girls cam, and ur not selling just ur body but the whole experience. U could be fine as hell but if u fall flat on cam, act boring, don't hustle u may not make as much as a girl whos not as conventionally attractive. I think personality is just as important to do well. And back to the $, I don't make bank camming tbh, I make enough to live and sometimes save a small amount. the reason I keep camming is bcuz I enjoy it, I love performing and the freedom of the job, I have mental health issues and I can take off a night instead of being forced to suffer an 8-hr shift when I just had a panic attack.
Yes u can make ballin ass money on cam, if u work full time and treat it as a full time job. I'm not trying to discourage anyone but I just don't think the risk is worth the benefit in ur case. I could be totally wrong tho, like minnie said u never know till u try.
I just think its a good idea to think it thru for a long while first.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
the thing about not wanting to make $20 a day and make $50 an hour not advertising is that u may very well make $20 a day or LESS at the start. you have to work at it and build up . when i started camming 3 years ago i had this grandiose idea that i was going to make $100 a day when i started on SM working 4-5 hours a day and ended up making $15-$20 for awhile. I was on CB for months working the same hours everyday and after 3-4 months i was still averaging $20-30 a day being on from 11 at night to 6am. I dont even cam anymore for a few reasons mainly environment and tech issues. but IMO the two things that are going to put you at a disadvantage is the fact you dont want to advertise and u cant commit to certain hours that are the same every day . online sex work at its core is a commission based sales job so its like a baby you nature it and care for it and watch it grow. I dont cam anymore right now and i do very well doing Phone sex on Niteflirt and Talk to Mes party chat hotline. if your worried about exposure you dont even have to put ur real photos up you can buy photo sets of other girls put them up and advertise them on social media if you want.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
Why does everyone has this pre-conceived idea that camming is easy money?
Anyway the nuts and cracks of it, are most per per min sites like Streamate and Cams, if you don't put enough regular hours in every week, then they will put your profile down the pages, (like page 10 plus..) meaning you won't get found (well not easy - how many of you scroll to page 10 of google search results? same thing). The girls on the front 2 pages are there for a reason. They work for it.
As for token sites like Myfreecams or Chaturbute, if you only cam part time every now and then, you can't build a fan base and yet again most probably won't make a lot of bank.
Unfortunately that's the reality. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule. And as with every single thing in life.. You won't know unless you try. If you have a webcam, internet and PC then it won't cost you a cent to try. Even if you make $20, it's better than making nothing.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
you might be able to build up to $50/hour, but there's no telling how long that will take you considering you'll only be working "a few hours on weekend nights." That's what, 2, maybe 6 hours of live streaming time per week? I think it'll take you mooooooooonths to get to $50/hour on that type of schedule. And if you even care 1% that you'll be found out, don't do this. you will be found out. people will record your cam shows and upload them to every porn site out there. There are bots that record cam shows automatically, upload them, and then sell them for monthly rates...I have THOUSANDS of videos up of me. I guarantee you, any model that live streams has hundreds of videos up. Want to try only Skype? Those guys screen record the show without permission and then upload them too.
I could really give 2 shits what anyone thinks. I pay my bills. No one else does. (mini rant: kind of irks me that people care what other people think. like, why? Why? WHY?)

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
When I first started camming in 2009 it was fairly easy money but times and atmosphere of the sites have changed. I don't make 50 an hour anymore. From what I've seen, the ladies that make that kind of money put a lot of time and effort in to it and treat it like a business.
I agree with the above statements about not doing it if you're concerned you might get outed. Sites and some custies record privates and put them on tube sites and I've been recognized before. I had my town blocked but someone was visiting a different province and stumbled on me that way.
I'm now moving on to PSO work because there's more 10$ days than 100$ days for me on cam now and it just isn't worth the stress.

You seem to misunderstand how commission jobs work. The reason that the money is so good when it comes to ANY commission job is because there is not guarantee on how much money you will make from day-to-day. But, on the flip-side of that coin there is no ceiling to what you can make either like there is with a 9 to 5 job. 9 to 5 limits the amount of money you can make because you work for someone else for the trade of that they pay you a small limited amount of money consistently. Commission job money is not as consistent and if you spend the time and effort learning how to hustle then the pay off can be huge.
There is big money in selling houses for a living but you aren't going to be able to make good money at selling houses if you just do it for a couple hours a week on the weekend.
In summary.....yes you can get paid well without promotion, the camming market has not reached a point of saturation yet and there is still lots of money to be made in the industry.
But if you want big money then you will have to put in big work to get it. If it was easy then everyone would be doing it. ;)

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
If you cant be found out dont do it. Perhaps PSO would be better for you. There is lots of info on SW for getting started. Or if your up to it go find a sugar daddy. First read Ho Tactics (available for kindle or as a book) and see if you can find a guy to spoil you.
If you dont want your face out there then webcam is not for you!

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
I rarely ever cam. Like maybe once or twice a week lately and I do well on cam when I am on. That said, I have over 14k followers on Twitter for what thats worth. Lately I have just been putting more effort into making videos and being a mom. That said, I don't think you should cam at all. If you are concerned even one person will find out then camming is not for you. Also, if you do decide to do it I suggest you actually read through the threads on this forum as you seem to have some sort of delusion that just getting on cam should earn you boat loads of money. Even though I have large breasts, they are by no means large for the industry and I most often get compliment on my personality. That is key! You can be the most beautiful girl in the world and make absolutely nothing on cam if you don't know how to engage an audience.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
Hi girls,
Thanks for all the responses. I suppose it just seems comparable to stripping and most people do that to pay the bills. Seems like you're really putting yourself out there & the payout should be worth it. I get it that its a commission based job and understand that you can't just sit there & be pretty, you've gotta engage and sell yourself so to speak.
It's not necessarily that I can't be found out at all cost. My boyfriend knows that I'm looking into it, and its going to be sort of a don't ask don't tell kind of thing. I also have kids. So I just would rather not have any further correspondence with clients outside of shows to prevent any personal correspondence & also to not have like a solid profile out there for people that I know to possibly find. But like I said, it's not like a HUGE deal. Like if someone I knew or someone that knew my kids found my live show, then whatever, they're looking at live shows. But a profile is something that people could direct others to to look at.
I also realize now that people will record me. Which isn't a HUGE thing, but is definitely a thing. I do really want to do this, I think I'd like it, and I'd strip if I could dance at all, but I'm the world's clumsiest mofo, so no. I could commit to scheduled times, they'd just be far apart, like 3 nights on, two off, one on, 4 off sort of deal. But I could at least tell people in the room when I'd be back.
SO, with all that being said, anyone have any tips or sites that maybe would be better for like more private, specialty shows with less chance of being recorded? If that was a thing I bet everyone would be doing it, but I thought I'd ask.
I know I probably come off as a dummy who's just oblivious to the business, and I kind of am, but I am truly interested and really just wanted to know, from girls in the industry, if you thought my situation was worth it.
Thx

If u want to do more private and specialty shows u could try signing up for Cammodeldirectory. I'm not sure how much traffic u would get without any other cam profiles, but the site seems to have great traffic in general and that way u could just do 1-on-1 Skype shows. I also think the suggestion of starting out w/ phone sex, sexting, etc could be a good one for u- way less likelihood of being found I'd think... U can create personas, use pics of different girls, etc Some popular phone sex sites are NiteFlirt and TalktoMe

Keep in mind that with ANY cam site you sign up on, you will have a profile that's there even when you're not streaming live. Anyone can see you performing live and share your link with others and even if you're no longer live, they'll still see your profile. If that bothers you, definitely consider PSO. As it was mentioned a few times in this thread, you can buy photos of other models to put up on your phone sex profile and then if someone you know finds it, they will never know it's you.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
well, I started part time almost 4 years ago, but that was 8-2, m, w, f, s and I averaged about $175 a night. So, logging on, working a couple of hours and making an average of $50 a night can be complicated. At this point I'm full time and my hourly is very good, but its because I built up a clientele.
Think of it as being a hairstylist in an upscale place. Eventually you can fill your schedule, but until you do, all you get is walk ins.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
I totaly understand the "is it really worth it?" feeling, I've decided the only way to truely answer that question for myself is to just do it and find out. :) There are so many variables! But from one new partimer to another I say if you want it go for it! And don't get discouraged on a 10 dollar night (best Ive had so far hahah) that's 10 more dollars than you had before!

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
I crammed part time 6-10 hours per week from 2010 to 2013 and nobody ever knew. I geoblocked my location and I then requested to be removed from promotions after I had a good rating and cam stream. Placement wasn't affected at that point. I also charged insanely high rates and had a specific group I catered to.
I I spent maybe 20 percent of my logged on time actually IN chat. I made from 800 to over a grand per month. When I quit I was making almost two grand per month. I quit cramming to work a rat race vanilla job and I am back. I do phone sex full time now and supplement with cam, at least I plan to. I've only cammed this week but so far its
not too bad with a new profile, low rating due to being new and not setting my insane rates high until I get a few cheapo wankers to give me 5 stars. Maybe somebody will see you, maybe not. Don't do anything on cam you would be upset about. Like, I don't do anal or dildo sucking and I always kept my face out of paid chat.

Depends what you mean by worth it.
Camming is a job with little physical risk (compared to either stripping or escorting) that you can do from the safety of your own home. You are your own boss and have flexible hours. You also can chose to do whatever types of shows you would like to do.
The (simplified) downside is that you could have videos of you doing dirty things in your birthday suit sent to your family, friends and peers or you could end up limiting your future career depending on what you decided to do with your future.
For me, I rather risk having videos of me doing dirty things in my birthday suit for the whole of the internet to see then be stuck in the 9-5 grind for minimum wage. I can't tell you if it is worth it for you because only you know what is worth it to you.
That being said, if you want my two cents I think you really should take the advice of all the girls that have told you to look into doing phone sex dispatch. But remember....while you'll have a better idea of what you make, you will be making pennies on the dollar of what you could be making because you are trading the security of knowing exactly how much you will be making on a regular basis for the higher amount of money you could be making if you were marketing yourself.

Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
If you aren't able to stick to a regular schedule, you might try making fetish clips on Clips4Sale. That way you could make a bunch of clips on the days when you had time to work, and autoschedule to upload them regularly even if you weren't "working" every day.
-
Re: Worth it for part time extra income?
People usually think of "camming" as the main type of online sex work, but there are so many different options, some of which don't have the same constraints or even risks of actual camming
(e.g., you can make non-nude clips on clips4sale, and like people have said, you can do phone work)

I agree about the schedule, when I slack for a few days my earnings suck when I am back. Not always, but very often. Videos is a better idea.
