Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
I signed up for twitter using my personal cellphone and it forced me to put my phone number in but said it doesn't share it with anyone. It would not let me bypass this while signing up, so I did it anyway. I was shocked when someone I know followed me, then my SO followed me as well. I wasn't sure how he found this twitter account as I had no information on it and no tweets, so how did he know? He told me that he got a popup on his phone saying something like "one of your contacts has joined twitter" and it allowed him to follow it.
I have since changed the twitter handle on my account, but it's a scary thought considering my family is listed in my address book on my phone. No one has said anything yet, and I KNOW my mom wouldn't be able to refrain, but just thought I would give you a heads up!
If you're going to sign up, use a computer rather than your phone. Twitter is always changing stuff like this so it's hard to keep up. I should have known better! It might be just something that happens if you and your contacts both have twitter or maybe it only happens on Androids? I don't know, but be careful so you're not accidentally exposing yourself!
I removed my phone number from my acct, but who knows, I dunno if they can still find me.
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
I signed up on the computer and the very first thing they did was recommend my cousin. I freaked out and blocked her.
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
Never use your real number. Or any of your real data on these social media sites. Or you will get caught up.
If you use social media, you have to take several steps to protect your privacy.
Facebook Twitter etc all thrive on keeping people connected. The easiest way to link you to your connections is your phone number, which you have given to others like your partner an your mom. Also your email address is another way people can find you.
Just try to keep things separate as possible. For example The data that you used to sign up for work social media accounts should never be shared outside of trustworthy work contacts. If you do sign up for work social media accounts never use your personal data
or to save yourself the headache do like a lot of the cam girls do here and delete your personal social media accounts if you are going to have a work social media for Camming
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
If an app/site does force you to put in a phone number, either get a Google Voice number (acts as a real, separate phone number, and you can pick any state's area code you want) or get a second phone and a super cheap pay-as-you-go SIM card.
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
I agree with what miss.a.p1600 said.
If you use your personal phone number for social media camming related you are looking for trouble.
I have a different phone number for everything cam related.
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
When I first created my cam twitter, I went to my personal twitter and blocked all of the people I followed/who followed me, and many of their contacts, too, "just incase." I eventually just deleted it, though because I never use it anyway. Android phones can be particularly bad because you have to have a gmail account signed in on the phone. Have to check what is set up to sync before you connect other accounts on your phone. The app textme can also give you a phone number to use, but it to connects to your phone contacts.
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
I just got a separate phone the contract was really cheap and it saves all this hassle. I use it for all my apps and its a life saver. I would recommend doing that its nice to turn it off when i'm not in the mood too!
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
This is why I removed the twitter app from my phone years ago when another girl on here said her contacts all synced overnight during an automatic update! Use a seperate phone for work related things if you can, clear alllll cookies (because, YES, you will have personal FB contacts suggested for Twitter because everything wants to be as connected as possible these days!!)
Re: Twitter and Your Phone Contacts
There's a setting on twitter under settings - then email notifications that when checked will email you when one of your address books contacts join twitter. This was already activated on my account, which I am assuming was why my SO got the notification (because his was auto activated as well).
Typically I would never cross my personal stuff with my work stuff, but I just wasn't thinking!
I HATE how everything tries to connect to everything else. I JUST got an email that my little brother joined Pinterest. Why would I even need to know that? It was because both of us connected through facebook, but still! I even changed my settings on Facebook in case my photos try to sync, now all statuses and photos can ONLY be seen by me unless I change it just to be on the safe side!
I would use a separate phone, but I always have my phone on me and really don't want to have to keep two.
I have two facebook accounts, one was deactivated (but somehow came back to life) and one with no photos of me on it. My SO took photos of us and it automatically tagged my old facebook because it recognized my face. I HATE THAT. Get out of my life, Facebook! You're too powerful!
We all need to be especially careful with what we post and how we sign up for stuff!
