How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
I am considering stripping, but one of my concerns is finding a house? I would be looking for a place around the Markham, IL or South Holland, IL or Chicago, IL area. How lenient or strict are landlords about renting to a stripper?
I know some may concerned about not getting payments, or even drug and drama problems, but literally I have no friends (true story) and don't do drugs (technically I'll have a few blunts a few times a year, but I can very easily go several several months without touching it, so piss could never trace it)
If I were to tell a landlord up front
"I'm really interested in this house, and yes I am a stripper and I get most (or all) of my income from tips, however I can show you proof of deposits right here (and then go ahead and hand him my phone, with bank statements up), I don't want you to worry about missing or late payments as I will be willing to pay you rent NOW for the past 3 months, as well as this months and next months rent. If you are worried about an issue coming up, you may most certainly toss my shit out the window the second anything were to come up. I'm not full of drama, I have a minimal amount of acquaintances and no friends, my boyfriend would only be around here every 4 or 5 months or so and he's the quiet type, I don't have a drug problem and if you want confirmation on that you can actually take me down to the Walgreens right over here and I'll even pay today for you to test me right now. Matter of fact you can even carpool with me down there or I can pay for your gas, even though it's right over here. I know you may be warry renting to a stripper, but I promise you I am nothing to worry about, and in the even an issue WERE to come up, you would be the FIRST to be notified"
do you think even a warry landlord would budge after saying that?
Just looking for thoughts and opinions and advice and knowledge on this issue.

This is hard to answer. I don't know that particular real estate market. Here, in South Fla. a landlord would probably be happy to see you were a dancer as the rent payment should not be an issue... however Chicago is def. the mid west and albeit a bit more conservative. First and foremost, you should never start any discussion about your job with a diatribe about how you don't do drugs. That is offensive to you and everyone in the industry. With a decade plus in this biz; I would say I have seen maybe 30% or so do drugs and only 20% are addicts. Leave that out. 2nd, if you feel like you job would be an issue say you are a bartender or self-employed with an internet job. A lot if people work from home these days. If you have decent credit they won't look at much else.
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
I've never had issues renting. These days there's all sorts of non conventional jobs that people do and it's pretty common to not have a regular 9-5.
You can say you're a programmer, an online tutor, a nanny, a bartender, a consultant, a graduate student with funding etc. No need to tell them the truth if you're concerned that they wont be cool with it. I always offer post dated cheques so they know they don't have to case me around on the 1st of the month and I show them a bank statement if they really care. Renting from an agency has usually been easier for me than an individual landlord but that might vary from place to place.
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
First of all, if you say all that you're trying too hard. Do not tell him you are a stripper, tell him you waitress or bartend, whatever, he does not need to know you dance. Therefore you still make almost all your money on tips, offer to print him a bank statement, and ask how many months rent is necessary for him to trust you. Don't just offer several months upfront. Also how is your credit?
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
I just reread what your wrote and yeah .... do not say that! Its very demeaning to yourself and strippers everywhere.
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
just say you're self employed. You work for yourself ( which technically u do)
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
Yeh I agree with the ladies ... don't announce you're a stripper. Also just for your safety, and privacy you know? You have no idea who that landlord is and what type of a person he is. You don't want him to put any weird pressures on you or do anything creepy in your living space. I'm prob being paranoid but you just never know with people, people jump to odd conclusions about women with certain jobs, and it sucks, but better to keep some privacy.
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
I personally have had no issues. I usually provide them some bank statements for proof of my monthly income if they ask because I'll pay for certain things with a card. But depending on how close minded a person is, I do know 2 close friends of mine had issues when moving to a smaller town. She just told them she was a bartender and her roommate was a stripper and the landlord was uncomfortable and told them they didn't want to rent to them because of their occupations. Oh well. But myself, I have not had any issues. You could just say you are an independent contractor and provide some monthly ledgers for proof of income.
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
What else can you use for proof of income? Just tax returns? Good credit is the biggest factor where I live but My apartment requires paycheck stubs.

Renter here. I got my apartment with a job letter form my boss saying I'm a manager making x amount per year. I'm sure a boss could write you up as a bartender as a job letter. On top of that I have good credit and I'm in university full time (I said I only went to school part time because my current apartment is expensive and is in a good part of toronto)
im also planning on purchasing a condo soon and I bought a car a year ago m, financed it, got approved, and never once did I say I was a stripper. I said I worked as a waitress. I honestly think you'll have a hard time renting in a high end area saying you're a stripper
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
Get on Realtor.com and look at houses. Call the management companies of ones you like. Be straight up; "I'm self employed with no pay stubs, can you take a letter from my boss or a history of bank deposits as proof?" If they say yes, move forward with "Cool, I'm interested in XYZ house"... they don't even need to know. Take control of the conversation. If they ask, just say "I'm a dancer/entertainer" and change the subject. The less YOU react to questions or funny looks, the less they will. Be polite but make it plain you're not a freakshow exhibit & don't want to answer questions. They need to treat you the same as any other IC/self-employed person.
I've rented 2 apartments... my self-employment has been the least of the issues. Good credit, rental history, no or non-aggressive breed pets, and criminal background have far outweighed the actual source of income in importance both times.
I don't see any reason a high-end area would say shit unless it's a private landlord. Management companies and apts I doubt would give you an issue if your ducks are in a row. We have looked at very nice apartments before & I bluntly told them I was a dancer; they were a little flustered but all that came of it was they had to confirm with the manager how to handle proof of income. They never tried to avoid renting to us.
Re: How hard is it to find a house as a stripper?
I was looking and a realtor asked me if i would sign up for this new program that takes out the rent automatically, it made it easy to get quality after that as they know when they get their money. I think it was run through Key Bank..There is a name for it, could be called Z-rent., but I am not sure. Can help with credibitly, and quality of the place you may want
