Maybe take her fashion advice. You can look cheap and expensive at the same time!

But really I wouldn't try to go out of the norm, basic sells more than gaudiness or weirdness or "different". You're not trying to be Lady Gaga on stage. lol Even looking back in time, when a person takes up the trends they look like they belong in that decade... but when they are looking neutral it looks timeless.
Katy Perry is a master at this "look basic, but drop one "different" single. She normally releases basic neutral songs, and then she drops a crazy song on us "Dark Horse" was her crazy song. "ET" another crazy song.... in moderation it could make you stand out. Think blonde hair with green 0highlights. But don't go with green hair, unless you look really good with it.
Look at Britney Spears, she's as basic as they get for a female pop star, and she is still a top seller. Look at what Bionic did to Christina Aguilera. Can even go back in time, Madonna was a top seller until she became too "weird" with Erotica, and too controversial with American Life (American Life would make it nowadays... but going against the President at that time was really bad like Dixie Chicks).
I would ask myself, "Would Britney Spears wear this if she was a dancer?" and you can't go wrong.
But being different, you can also create niche market for yourself too... like Bjork, or Enya. But they will never will be top sellers, but they will sell to their markets.

Look at Disney princesses too...
Too basic= Bell, Aurora, Cinderella
Different= Jasmine, Ariel, Snow White (she is basic, but she is the first so that makes her stand out)
TOO DIFFERENT= Pocahontas (artistry), Mulan (she goes against the Disney princess formula), and the Disney princess with the white hair from Atlantis
just in small dosages.
