What kind of car should I get?
So I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of my rust bucket of a car. I really don't know anything about cars, like what make and models are good. I just want a small, no frills and hopefully inexpensive car that's reliable. And what about color? I heard somewhere that white cars can look cleaner than black cars. I was gonna go on Craigslist to look for a used car but now I'm going more towards leasing a new car so i wouldnt have to worry so much about maintenance. What do you guys think?

Re: What kind of car should I get?
Get a low mileage second hand Toyota Corolla. My brother has one for years. That thing just won't die.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
The Toyota Yaris is pretty reliable and sounds like what you're looking for. The Honda Civic as well. I tend to buy Japanese, but the Ford Focus is a similar American car, if that's something that matters to you. You can also poke around on here, to find reviews.
Edmunds Car Reviews
Good luck!

Following. I'm saving up to buy a used car. I don't know much about cars.

I'll second that. People tend to like this car a little more than the Yaris. I like the Yaris a little bit better, and you might be able to find a Yaris for cheaper, because it's less popular than the Corolla.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
My advice would be to get one that's automatic. I drive one (Opel / Vauxhall) and it's SO easy to drive :)
(I live in a busy city, if you don't - it might not matter that much)

Re: What kind of car should I get?
Thanks guys for your replies. I only know how to drive an automatic.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
I've had Toyotas and Mazdas since I've been driving. Both are very popular low maintenance car brands.

What about hyundai? I saw a Hyundai veloster on the road today. I liked the look of it. Don't know if Hyundai is any good tho.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
I would definitely recommend getting one from a dealership and not craigslist just because you can take it back to the dealership if you ever have any issues. Plus my dealership lets me bring my car in whenever and they'll clean it really nicely inside & out for free. Mine is a BMW but I'm sure other dealerships do this too.
And I used to have a black car and it's true they can look dirtier than white ones. Mine is white now and I can go a while without cleaning it and it still looks nice. Also scratches aren't as noticeable (someone scratched mine and I forget it's there but when my black car got scratched it was so noticeable).
Oh and also to get an idea of different cars and how people like them you can look on carmax and read the reviews people post about them. It helped me eventually choose a BMW over a Jeep.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
My friend has a Cruze and it was a nice little car with all the internal bells and whistles. They go for 10-15k used with low miles.
Civics last forever too.

Subaru has very high ratings in quality and safety

If I end up leasing a new car do I need to take it with disability insurance?

Re: What kind of car should I get?
If you are up for it I'd say learn how to drive stick and get a manual car. They are a lot more fun than automatic. I wanted a manual hatchback, so I'm personally searching for a decent Mazda3 or Impreza. I also had bad luck with a 2013 Toyota Sienna after having a 1998. I was far far from impressed. The new ones are just so so flimsy. Currently I'm driving a 1993 Mazda Miata and it is one tough little car.
Oh another thing with the Mazda3, I find it very very promising that most of the cars for sale that I see have 150k+ miles. A very good sign in my book.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
Nissan, Toyota or Honda used.
If you think it's appropriate buy new. Leasing to me is too much headache.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
Once you go Honda, you'll never go back. Buy a good used late model Accord or Civic.

LOVE my Honda civic. I learned to drive on a VW and was kind of attached, but I bought a VW used on craigslist and it turned out to be a nightmare. Went to the Honda dealership and never looked back!!!
My civic gets 40 miles to the gallon.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
I'll second several other posters suggestion to buy a late model pre-owned, particularly one that has some significant warranty left on it. (Like 12 months or more). Based on my experiences renting multiple times, I'd say the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra would be good choices. Both are laid out well, and highly rated in reviews. I haven't driven, or rode in a Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Subaru, or Chevy Cruse lately, so I can't comment on those. Ford Focus gets some good reviews, but I personally didn't like it quite as well as my 2 main choices due to instrumentation and control layout being not quite as good as them.
You've been given an array of good choices out there. After doing your legwork via Edmonds, Consumer Reports, etal, I'd go to the dealers, take test drives on your final choices. If it comes down to some finalists, I'd go with the dealer that you feel will work with you the best. (Both sales experience, and subsequent service.)
One additional possibility would be to check out the rental car company sales, especially the Big 3. They often sell their fleet after ~ 15000 miles. Most warranties are 36 months/36000 miles or better. Hth...

I remember my first car. a used Honda civic 96. Old and functioning. one day it just disapeared from the drive way. A week later, cops found it on the side of the highway and internal parts were gone.
Cops wanted me to pay $300 to get it destroyed. I say no fucking way. My dad had someone towed the remains to his club and people use it for target practice.
After that I learned old honda is thiefs favor parts car. So I won't buy Honda anymore.

It is getting hard to find a car with a manual transmission.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
Honda, Toyota, Nissan. I love my BMW but have put TONS more money into than my Honda. I worked in the service dept at a Ford dealership for a few years and Focus' are absolutely terrible. My best friend worked for Kia, she said they're terrible as well.

Re: What kind of car should I get?
if you can get a loan, do consider the low end kia/hyundai/toyota loss leader cars, they can have killer finance deals making them a good deal compared to an almost new car. Leftover 2016s also, new car warranty but need to get them off the lot. Cheap kia starts around 15k
If going used, shop around, know what prices are. you have a lot more leverage when you can tell the sales guy that there are 43 2011 Honda Accords on craigslist for under 13k.
Know what you want, know what you can spend, don't get sold
Remember they are using stripper tricks on you.....
