Did black/white/Asian/Hispanic/female/male/anything play a role in your life?
I have been insanely privileged all my life, my ego is always kept in check by the sheer fact that I got lucky. All of my failings have have been my own fault.
Definitely am far from the perfectly balanced race of equality as far as treatment goes lol! When I got out of prison I took a delivery job for a few months to appease my parole officer, and there was a race in particular that literally my first month of employment, out of about 50 different customers, did not tip me, irregardless of time, politeness, and charisma. Ironically enough however one of the biggest tips I got ($50 is pretty damn good for pizza, probably aint shit to you ladies lol!) was from the same race, so I don't judge or categorize ever. I also tip no matter what!
Well. I've had the privilege of being fairly attractive physically, went to some top tier schools so (despite my ratchet rantings) I'm well educated. I am Bilingual so I can talk to and make money from multiple groups. And as far as race and ethnicity I come from more than one background so I have a unique look (at least in this city).
I think we all have an advantage of some sort whether it be riches, looks, education, health, race/ethnicity, etc.
Same here!!!
Ratchet, it's just a state of mind.
We all benefit from some privileges and we all (or most of us) are faced with challenge as well. I'm privileged to be born white, able bodied, thin, attractive (lol) from a first world country. Some of the obstacles I've faced in society was being born to a poor family who struggles with mental illness, being born female, being a sex worker (which yes is a choice but it makes some things way harder as we all know), being a really young mom, etc some of the stuff society looks down on.
But all in all I feel pretty fortunate
I'm multiracial but white passing so there's privilege there but my family wasn't well off, they had enough to get by but we definitely didn't have any rich privilege. Being born in a first world country and never having to deal with immigration and being forced to learn a different language than you're used to just to get by at a young age is also a privilege I have. Dealing with mental illness from early childhood is another disadvantage of mine.
I believe some people try to debunk white privilege because it's misrepresented and it's hard to see if you're only used to being around other white people. I have a very diverse social circle and always have so I've seen the differences between the way certain things effect me vs someone with darker skin than me, also people try to make privilege seem like it's ONLY about race when it's not, there are many different types of privileges someone can have race is only one part of it.
That's my take on privilege. Not sure if I went off the original subject matter.....I probably did....but I usually do so oh well. lol
...it's not healthy to obsess over priveldge in some kind oppression Olympics, if you want to count your blessings, fill your boots, that fine, but all this priveldge talk is toxic, it breeds divisions and resentments between ordinary people, while the millionaire and billionaires laugh thinking, this fuckers think they are priveledged, they aren't even in our galaxy of priveldge.
Sex/Gender/Race/Sexual Orientation ect... is a fly speck of different compared to the 1% and the ordinary people.
No one here is talking about privilege with respect to oppression so what are you talking about?
Having privilege in society is a fact and there are research studies to show this.
For example there are research studies that show attractive people are more likely to a) get priority in getting hired [ever thought about the reason pictures don't get put on resumes unless you're a media personality???] b) more likely to get away with committing crimes and c) have priority selection of mates.
Why should we stop talking about factual things that occur in the world because you're uncomfortable?
I acknowledge some people have advantages in life. I'm not upset, I merely made a suggestion. Take it or leave it, it doesn't matter to me.
The thread has already been reported as being potentially divisive (no it wasn't Omega). So let's keep it civil, non-political, etc.
There are all kinds of privilege, and all manner of ways that people of any race, creed, etc. can suffer from lack thereof.
I agree with you as far as focusing too much on injustice is likely to perpetuate the cycle of said injustice. I believe in law of attraction Which is why I do think it's important To focus more on positive outcomes we do want as opposed to the opposite.
I'd think of this topic as something not necessarily to ignore but not something to dwell on either.
Idk. Such an imperfect flawed yet beautiful world we live in.
I edited 2 posts a little bit, and deleted 1. To keep it civil, and keep the thread open.
Ever heard of the blonde privilege? Blonde waitresses make more bank.
Food for thought.
^^^Yep. Real Blonde hair and blue eyes is rare so I could see the advantage they'd have. Just ask Hugh Hefner lol!
I wonder if Shakira would sell as many albums as she have in the US if she used her natural hair color instead....

Real blondes are rare, maybe 5% of the population, yet are 33% of pornstars.

Never understood the allure, this and eye color is like the least relevant feature I look at.
i personally think she would have - she's hot either way
She appears from that pic to be a natural brunette. But she is also one of those ladies that would look good either way, in my opinion.
I forgot. I think there is penis privilege. As much as men (and women) are obsessed over size and wanting bigger as though it equates to better? Same with boobs. I bet out of all the cosmetic surgeries breast implants are probably the most common as women and men are obsessed with larger fuller breasts.
Penis enlargement surgery is dangerous in the sense that you risk losing erections. This and height are practically impossible to change with surgery. Thank god for good genes...
As for breasts, I mean I guess you ladies have it down to an exact science on what men consider attractive, but I will say that there is a very loud, very vocal contingent that is purist about large natural breasts on a thin frame. I call it genetic negging, basically no matter how hard girls try (well pay their surgeon) they will always be negged.
I have never gotten a ticket or points on my license despite going 30+ over the speed limit, no license on me & tags that were 3 months expired; but I tend to flirt or cry in those situations so it helps. I highly doubt that would be the case if I were a man.
I always get compliments on my name. There have been studies shown that the same exact resume with different names can be presented to an employer and the more... "conventional" ( that's about as PC as I can put it) will get a call before one of certain ethnic origins.
Big Shakira fan here and I have a theory about Shakira's crossover success. You see, Shakira was this alternative Rock en espanol chick during her "Ojos asi" days and many rock en espanol fans including myself followed her. She had henna hair, dark lyrics, and was super moody. She was all over MTV Latino and everyone thought she was going into that Soda Stereo or La Ley route. However, she could not crossover in America without a new look and singing dark lyrics in Spanish or Arabic. We all know that no rock en espanol artists can crossover in North America for several reasons. One of these reasons include that Pop Latino is more popular with American-born Latinos than rock en espanol :)
Even great bands such as Heroes del Silencio, Lucybell, Babasonicos, Zoe, Los Prisioneros or Soda Stereo could not crossover. So, she "Americanized" herself a bit to be more acceptable. She bleach her hair, wrote more mysterious lyrics, tone down her Arabic heritage, developed a more hippy rock chick look and had a more polished Pop Latino sound. Also she made herself more sexual than before and that rest is history. However, you can still see her badass alternative rock en espanol chick come through in some of her videos. :)
