Do you need to register for HST/GST as a cam girl in Canada?
In Canada, small businesses making over 30k a year are required to register and charge their clients HST/GST tax. It applies to all services and goods sold. My question is: does this apply to the service cam girls offer? Do I have to put aside 15% on every dollar to account for what I owe the government in GST/HST tax?

You can file your taxes under your personal income tax. under other income box 20. You don't need to get a HST number because you are not collecting HST as a cam model.
and if would only apply if you plan on working and collecting HST. in a business.
Re: Do you need to register for HST/GST as a cam girl in Canada?
Hi there, I am new here and I am not a cam girl but I am a PSO and I really think anyone trying to figure out of they need to collect GST/HST they should call the cra and talk to a proper agent. I have had to collect GST in some situations. Heres the knowledge I have gotten from the CRA and an auditing agent. If you can absolutely prove you are an independent contractor and you have an actual contract that explicitly says so and the company you are contracting with has no presence in canada (ie strictly located in the USA) your arse is covered. If you dont have any paperwork saying you are a indenpdent contractor for the company and you arent collecting GST/HST you will be in big trouble if you are caught. It doesnt matter that its a service either you are still selling something. For example if you are on NF you have to collect GST/HST on your sales. Why? Check their agreement did you get anything from them saying you are in a contract with them? And that isnt on what you make its on what you charge. So if you charge 2 bucks per min you would pay GST/HST on the 2 bucks not what you make from it. With places like NF you are selling directly to the customer and NF is just taking its cut for the processing etc..so you need to be charging your customers sales tax. And the cra dont care if there is no place on there to charge the extra percentage. You are suppose to work that out of your earnings yourself. Also, doesnt matter whether you know the caller is in the US and did the call from his home in the USA either. Where is your proof? For the CRA its all about proof and its your burden, not theirs. Not trying to scare anyone but be careful and dont take my word for it contact the CRA and see what they say about your specific situation, its really a good idea to cover your arse. An audit is a scary thing no matter how honest you have tried to be with your reporting etc..
Re: Do you need to register for HST/GST as a cam girl in Canada?
this is literally copied and pasted from my big note of tax info i've come across in different discussions over the last couple years so i apologize for a lack of post credit if anyone sees their own words:
claim your income as an independent contractor. There's a list of industry codes that you use when filing: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/ ... s-eng.html
Under entertainment and recreation, there's this one: Internet publishing and broadcasting, and Web search portals (including online gambling and pornography) - 519130
There are deductions you can use that are specific to camming (internet, webcam, lighting, etc), and it'd be great if you could take advantage of those to save some money!
Depending on at what point you passed the 30K income mark, you may have the same due date to register. OR your date could have already passed your required date to register for the GST # for your business. You can call to get a GST ruling at 1 800 959-8287.
When you actually call to get your GST # (after calling and getting your ruling), the number 1 800 959-5525. It is a good idea to call and get your ruling first, just so that you understand the process and how it all works.
The important thing here to remember is that depending on WHEN you passed the 30K mark, you are required to register at a different time. For example, if you made more than 30K by March of 2013, you were required to register for your GST last year. You would need to call the CRA and clear that issue up.
You do have to register at 30k+ but camming is a "zero rate" service so you are not expected to collect gst/pst!
Re: Do you need to register for HST/GST as a cam girl in Canada?
The link doesnt work in your post but I googled I think its just a link with industry codes? Anyways, as you say people should contact the cra and tell them what they are doing and which sites they are working on so a senior agent can tell them for sure and then in writing what is expected of them. I did that myself and the agent I dealt with was really thorough and went over the legalise and the contracts for the sites I was on. The one company I work for is in the states and I have a contract saying I am an independant contractor for the company so that I dont pay gst on but NF for example was a no go. I had to pay all the gst on every single sale I did on there and did for years until I stopped using NF. It sucked. I would say, as you did, that everyone get a ruling to make sure they are compliant. Better to be safe then sorry, is all. Good luck to all us girls working in the adult industry! :)

The industry codes for CRA change constantly just keep that in mind too what could be there one year might be years later. which is the challenge I have every year I file.
