is having social media for camming necessary?
hi everyone
I know having social media (twitter, instagram etc) for promoting yourself for cam can be very beneficial (keyword, "can" haha)
but is it REALLY neccesarry you think? I have over 100k altogether on my IG and twitter so a fair amount of people following me, I always post content deals and when im going to be online and im extremly active on both, but frankly I feel like its just a waste of time. I never get anyone snagging those killer deals I have going on and im just like "i have a fuck ton of followers and im not getting 1 sale...what the hell"
I post things like "follow me on my camsite *MFC or manyvids etc! "posts link" and barely get any follows....and when i post im online and people come join my chatroom its still usually the same amount of people or just more freeloaders.
I know there is a fair amount of bots with my following too (yuck)
I hate the fact that I post all these things and it feels like im going nowhere and its just more and more freeloaders and thats it.
I also engage heavily with followers, i tweet about my day interests, and always comments back. I definatly let myself shine through with my personality. I hate the fact i give all this engagement....for basically no gain
do you use social media and does it help you? do you think its real necessary to have social media? because at this point after 4 years having it for cam and just more and more freeloeaders and no sales i just want to delete it all haha...

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
No. I don't have social media and I do well.
-
Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
No. I had over 30k followers on combined social media for years then deleted everything about 6 months ago. All I have now is my website and my cam profiles with no face pics. Twitter is particularly pointless now for camgirls. Insta may be better but it was all way too much effort for too little return and high privacy risk imo.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
I posted this earlier in one of the stickies up top.
You have to be engaging. Interact with them. If you're not getting any responses from your followers it's most likely because they haven't seen your personality come through. So I would suggest stop trying to sell them things and start posting about stuff you enjoy. Find some twitter threads with interesting conversations and get involved in those. This way your followers will pay more attention when you tweet and are more likely to click on you links out of curiosity. ☺
What you may have witnessed with other models is they're able to post link after link promoting services and are'nt interacting at all. But it appears to be working for them...most likely that is because they have a high level of engagement in their Chatroom. So now all they have to do is drop a link and guys buy their stuff.
Also try using hashtags that your target audience might pay attention to. Not just sexy ones. Things like sports, super heroes and get specific: #blackpanther #atomicblonde ....You really have to stay current and upvto date with whats going on. Twitter isnt just about the numbers, its about engagement.
There are people who dont use it and do just fine. Not all of my ventures are powered by social media, but because I have a high level of engagement I can drop a link to any given service and people will and do click thru. 100,000 followers on IG looks good but if they're all bots then tgat means no one is paying attention. Recently IG/FB sent cease and desist letters to popular companies that sell bots threatening to sue. They had no choice but to stop immediately. These bots were able to imitate engagement by setting criterias based on hashtags, locations and other demographics. So now going forward if you want increase sales you will need to place more focus on your content and interactions. You have to be honest with yourself and ask the question...is my stuff really that great? Am I convincing enough to make people want to contribute to my brand? If you aren't willing to invest in that then I say no socialmedia is not important..for someone who doesn't want to do that. Your focus will have to be on customer retention and holding the attention of those who do show up on your chatroom.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
One other thing I wanted to point out to those who may question their numbers or who may compare themselves to other cammers, many of those performers who may appear to be an overnight success have representation. They have agents who help them create their brand. Camsites have legit recruiters who look for people that they think would make great cammodels. Sometimes they start them out on social media with purchased followers and paid retweets. Its important I feel to realize this so wont be so hard on yourself.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
Absolutely not. I have a twitter that I check occasionally to passively follow site performance and camgirl drama but I've literally never pulled a sale from it and I do great. Social media works really well for some girls but it also has the potential to be a spectacularly toxic time/energy suck. No thanks, I'd rather just get on cam where the chances of making money are far more viable.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
Great point, Phat! :) I would like to add that some of these models might also brand ambassador contracts with several social media outlets as well.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
My twitter converts to sales and before that so did myspace & before that yahoo groups...
I am all about politics & being a bitch for the most part on mine. When I need cam or site sales, I turn on the charm.
How can guys know & connect with you on anything without knowing your passions, your ideas & such?
Would you watch a channel with nothing but commercials? Especially one for all the same product?

She is right. Some have a whole team behind them.
Hash tags do build followers though when used with a cute pic.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
I'm honestly not sure how much marketing has helped me. I have about 4K followers on Twitter, and a lot of Snapchat viewers. I did have a couple whales who would always visit me on MFC/Streamate when I tweeted that I was online (now I'm mostly indie). I really think it's the luck of the draw, sometimes you attract good customers, sometimes you don't. But I would leave it up just in case, and update it with cute pics once or twice each time you cam. Don't make your whole life about social media, because a lot of the guys on Twitter/Insta are freeloaders who just want *any* form of interaction with a hot girl.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
It is a tool. It can be a very useful & effective tool.
Some need it, some don't.
I dont really have lots of guys bugging me or asking for free. Most of them have learned better by now. ")
Just like on cam, play by my rules or I block. I do get sales & traffic from it but I've years of experience & fan base to draw from. Totally all drama but also I'm funny.
Mix it up. Follow others in careers & fields that interest you. Tweet a funny response to a post of theirs.
Build your base beyond just porn.
Never know who will tweet you back or retweet you.
Love a comic book writer or artist, follow them & several others in that group.
I do it with Adobe Cloud & some of their experts, learn new stuff all the time that way. My fans notice, they appreciate the efforts in that area I am making.
If you are an artist, go follow artist you admire.
There are some great film or history twitters, also Nasa & space, star trek, evil star trek,
Be apart of the bigger picture, it will draw better custies to follow you.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
If social media stresses you out and makes you procrastinate from doing your main bread and butter type work then don't use it, it will be a detriment to your earnings. If however, you enjoy the interaction and creating content for various apps then it might work out as another income generator. Personally, I find it didn't add any more income to my brand so I got rid of all the things. I have so much more time and peace now to just focus on the work that really makes me money.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
Hyori does make a valid point. Knowing your strengths & weaknesses & using to where it makes you the most money with less stress is important.
Don't give up on it until you are very sure though & have done some tutorials & such on how to be better at it.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
For me 100% YES. The days of just logging on a big box sites and making my BIG daily goal is not working.SO i gotta use teasers vids and promote my skype id and shows on instagram, twitter and snapchat. Also 3 to 5 years from now when i have my car and condo paid for i can be ok with skype /indie income only .
Build your brand now and sit back later and reap the fruits of your labor. To be honest i regret not doing social media sooner.More then half of my income is coming from traffic i bring on my own.I also dont rely only on social media i use site like reddit ,pornhuB ,sph forums, etc.. to promote my skype id.If i get 10 skype request one might bite and pay for a shOw.LOL good enough for me.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
I pretty much agree with what the others on here are saying. If social media is your type of hustle then it can definitely be beneficial, if it isn't then it will hurt you more than help. IF you don't at least enjoy aspects of what social media is then you will make yourself miserable trying to maintain for the basic reason that it's impossible to have a strong social media presence without constantly updating and interacting.
Personally, I wouldn't make a third of what I bring in if I didn't have social media... but I also spend HOURS a day cultivating a fanbase that will be engaged and have brand loyalty. It's hard, and some days/weeks/months it's going to fucking suck and you will think you're wasting your time and not seeing the fruits of your labor, but if you keep doing it then 3 months later you start to see the benefits from what you were feeling like shit over originally, and then 3 months after that it builds on itself, so on and so forth.
As a side note: I also think that camming is becoming more mainstream by the day (whether you like it or not) and that in 2-3 years, there will be a shift with mainstream ad revenue coming in and sponsorships on brands for cam models that have the large, engaged followings.

Yes I had a few twitters that have been stagnant and not much growth. So I switched the topic to non-adult things, more mainstreamed topics and I started getting more followers and more traffic to my webpages. For the longest i've been shy about getting involved in threads that weren't about sex because I was afraid I'd get trolled or something. I would switch to a mainstream twitter and join in that way but now I realize how silly that was and just go for it. Theres less and less of a reason for me to keep these things separated. Businesses have reached out to me on my adult platforms to do reviews on products. I still wonder if they realize who they're sending their stuff to, like did y'all read my twitter name? :) However I do the reviews on a mainstream youtube account that I use for all sorts of stuff.
In keeping with topic of mainstream, look at how many people are jumping on Patreaon for adult content. Patreaon has it worked out to accept PayPal for adult https://www.patreon.com/posts/patreon-supports-6073549 although I don't think you can do anything hardcore but still. Although some may still turn their noses up at what we do, we're no longer a counterculture.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
One last thing and then I need to get to work :) Quite often you may never know where a sale comes from. Guys don't usually send you feedback after they buy something. They aren't gonna give you marketing insights when they've got a boner. And when the boner is gone they move on to something else. It's like buying a cheeseburger, you don't go back to Wendy's just to tell them how bomb that cheeseburger was. Or you don't show up and say I just saw promo on twitter, Well here I am! Nope you just click and buy. So you really don't know if that clip you sold came from a lurker on your tl or not.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! don't tell the porn companies they haven't caught onto that yet. We are all still shunned by society.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
I have 40k followers and I've found that there really isn't a difference in traffic in my room whether I tweet before I go on or not. Sure, maybe a few guys will see the tweet and come through (which is great because your night can be made with just 1 guy), but for the most part I have the same amount of users in my room if I had tweeted or not. So I don't think it's absolutely necessary but it can only be better for business to have a social media presence. People, especially social media users, are bombarded with content on real-time basis. Being on SM keeps you relevant to them. I've had models that I unfollowed on twitter (mostly due to them doing it first) and I've found within a week I forget they even exist and am only reminded like months later because I see a retweet of theirs on my timeline.

For camming I don't use my social media.
All my social media goes to promoting my other business. It's a lot easier to promote a main stream business on social media then trying to get sales for cam shows or even porn.

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
^^ Yep. I deleted my cam social media so I could make ones for my vanilla biz and within a week I already had thousands of (genuine), responsive followers. It was like how twitter USED to be before 2015 when you could tweet a pic and get 100's of new followers, rt's, replies etc. Guys on there are so saturated in free tits and ass it's all much of a muchness. Plus twitter now auto filters nsfw tweets and pics. Sure guys respond to camgirls who 'show personality' i.e. talk about their fave sports team/ sport/ something guys are also into, but fuck me why should we have to do so much extra work keeping that shizz up when we can just spend that time in front of the actual cam making £ per minute?! It works for some bubbly types, and I have seen it work REALLY well, so not knocking it at all for those particular girls. But I think they are the minority. Most girls will just waste their time chasing their tails when their energy could be better spent just on cam.
I should note this is mainly re twitter. I know instagram can be a goldmine for getting noticed by brands and companies wanting you to promote their stuff, and I have personally had some success with reddit for my fetish videos x

In one week thousands? How many organic followers are we talking Susie?

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
Typo, I meant 'couple' of weeks! I did work pretty hard on promo but nowhere near as much as I ever did for my cam twitter, yet the results are far greater

Re: is having social media for camming necessary?
Very interesting thread. I deleted my Twitter account for privacy concern. Just registered again, going to try it out.

Bumping for those who want to dabble in exposure and generate their own traffic.
