Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
If someone had two part time jobs at the time the pandemic was announced, and they lost one part time income due to their club's closure but kept another part time income due to ability to work the second job from home, do they still qualify for unemployment?

I know all states/state sites are different but from what I've read it seems that anyone who doesn't fit the criteria for regular unemployment can file PUA. Its worth filing imo even if you get denied. I don't like to admit it but I was able to qualify for EBT/Snap (that's how shitty camming has got for me. I put down that I did web design.).
Just because one can work remotely doesn't mean they're making enough to stay afloat or that they aren't being affected by this pandemic (many remote workers income/earning potential is tied into how the economy is doing). If your earnings have went to shit during this pandemic (ours earnings can and may fluctuate due to current events) then I'd applied, the worst that can happen is them denying you.
I filed for unemployment myself, waiting to hear back. Once I know the answer I'll apply for PUA. If I get denied, then I get denied but if I get money that will be great. When I fill out paperwork (taxes, loan, etc) I put self-employed or independent contractor. If it asks for a specific title/field I put Web design/development. In the the past I've put customer service, internet marketing, internet sales. If you read the threads that are about "Do you tell people what you do?, What do you say you do?, What do you put on taxes, etc" many ladies say the same i.e. customer service, internet marketing, etc.
This is what it seems to say on most state sites in one way or another...
"PUA provides benefits to covered individuals, who are those individuals not eligible for regular unemployment compensation or extended benefits under state or Federal law or pandemic emergency unemployment compensation (PEUC), including those who have exhausted all rights to such benefits. Covered individuals also include self-employed, those seeking part-time employment, individuals lacking sufficient work history, and those who otherwise do not qualify for regular unemployment compensation or extended benefits under state or Federal law or PEUC."
"Currently, those who may file for PUA include individuals who are not able to work due to COVID-19 related reasons and are one (or more) of the following:
- Self-employed
- 1099 and "gig" workers
- Workers in jobs not covered by regular unemployment benefits. Example: Some employees of religious institutions may not be covered by regular unemployment benefits
- Peace Corps volunteers
- Other individuals who are attached to the labor force but are not covered by regular unemployment benefits"

absolutely worth trying! I was going by what it said on the cares act criteria about who doesn’t qualify and that includes people that are able to work remotely. If the sites you work from have closed, thats different. If you’re not making money bt still able to work....I’m not sure but it’s worth a try and I would!

I think that exclusion only applies to ppl who have had their office jobs moved to remote work. There are a lot of ppl w/professional jobs, who are unaffected and are able to continue working as usual, only at home. Examples include accountants, network engineers, lawyers, etc, so basically our customer base who will hopefully be overeager to go out after this is over, if it's ever over. Also, even ppl who work remotely and are able to earn some money but who have seen a decrease in business as a direct result of COVID19, are eligible. At least, I hope my understanding of it is correct. I did apply and was approved, and the requirement seems to be that my work be effected as a direct result of COVID19 and that I have not been offered any work to replace lost income. I did mention on my application that my job is contingent on being able to interact with others, and due to social distancing gov. mandates, I am unable to work. I hope that qualifies me correctly. Testing positive for COVID19 or having to care for someone who is, also seems to qualify you. The benefits are definitely a relief, but they do not fully offset the income loss for some of us. I try not to focus too much on that, yet.

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
Not complaining because I'm BLESSED to have gotten any unemployment benefits at all, but I got back payments for April recently and then heard my club was reopening on the 22nd. Which means I technically only have two weeks left to claim unemployment. Im quarantining with family for awhile and moving to Philly where clubs won't reopen for awhile so I'm just scratching my head wondering if I should still try to claim unemployment into June.....

i would keep collecting until you go back and find out what the club is like. Maybe the club can’t hire you back because there isn’t enough business....

Well, you won't be working so yes.

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
Every state has its own methods of validating an applicant. Some want to check your story more thoroughly than others. They base any kind of "entitlement" on their specific income standards. Being in a cash business means you want to be sure that what you have filed on your taxes matches what you say to these social services.

Keep claiming UI or PUA and if you work, go ahead and report it so you won't get into trouble. They will just deduct what you make from your weekly payment. As long as the hours you work do not meet or exceed full time, you're good. If you earn/claim to earn more than what your state has awarded you -- you will not get money from the state for that week but you will get your $600 from the Feds.

Reason I ask is bcuz I was dancing in Guam at the time. Their UI benefits aren't going to be up until Mid May. However I'm living in California right now. And they just opened there application for self-employed. I'm wondering if i should just go thru CA's unemployment.
Guam is paying out more $$ tho.
In my case I uploaded a copy of the governor's order closing all clubs.
Go through whichever state gives the most benefits for the longest amount of time. Some states give less than $200 a week, while others pay up to $700. Some give for 39 weeks and others give for 12 weeks.

YES you can. File as a worker who's business has gone down because of Covid 19. They will cover you. ' You've already missed 6 weeks of money, minimum $3600. Don't miss the last 10 weeks, $6,000 .
-
Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
Just an update: I received 8 weeks of backpay today! What a relief. I o my get the state minimum plus the additional 600 which didn’t apply to my first two weeks of unemployment.

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
They finally got our application system running. It was still kind of wonky with entering employment history but hopefully it's adequate for them. I think my stuff is waiting for a human to approve it but it says I qualify for the max benefit. I uploaded my tax return including Schedule C and my W2 from my regular job, but they are also accepting bank deposit records, business licenses, advertisements for your business, etc.
I also got a pretty decent check on Wednesday for 3 weeks worth of the minimum benefits. They sent those out to anyone who was deemed 'monetarily ineligible' for regular benefits and said it pretty much means you're approved for PUA.
Crossing fingers it all goes through, cuz they owe me another 6 weeks of $$$!

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
Update: after initially filing a month ago there weren’t any updates, I went back on the CA website at like 2am the other night and chose to just file a new claim that seemed to get through quickly (I’m assuming cause of PUA?) and the next day I was able to certify for benefits. Being processed now!

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
I got screwed out of 2 weeks because I kept being denied. I'm going to see if I can appeal it because I was being denied due to Indiana being slow asf to get the new law put into place.

Haven't received my unemployment this week and then today I get this in the mail. No idea what this is about. I don't have my past 3 years tax returns, so I just sent the past 2 years and praying it's enough. I never received backpay either.

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
Every state is different, but requiring 3 years is ridiculous and makes no sense. They are trying to make sure you had a viable business at the time of the disaster declaration. That has NOTHING to do with your income in 2017!
Did you file in that year? If you did you can get a tax transcript or perhaps a copy of your return online at IRS.gov
Good luck - this looks like BS to me. As long as your numbers from 2019 are legit, you should be okay. They are trying to catch people with DBAs or LLCs that haven't been in use for years and are now trying to claim PUA.

Re: Is anyone applying for unemployment due to covid-19? Apparently we can....
Guam still is not ready to make unemployment paymnts ;( they haven't even received the federal funds yet. I think the feds do not care about the territories SMH.
I'm trying to abide by "apply where you worked where the pandemic happened" rules but so tempted to just go thru another state lol.
It probably would be way straight forward if i just waited, i have everything required to receive payment (employers [including the club] have already submitted our names in the sysstem)
just ugh

Oh man and I thought I had to wait a long time :( I hope they get it set up ASAP for you. It’s crazy the state that I live in has one of the highest covid19 numbers and the state I work in is one of the lowest. Hopefully that means we will be working again soon but I still don’t see that happening until end of June maybe sometime in July.

I hope you get approved. Three years is more than is required for buying a house.

A bit confused, so based on the letter you received you cannot apply for unemployment benefits if you lost your club work due to the pandemic but you have some other source of incoming coming in? What if your other source of income is peanuts, and you needed to jobs to make ends meet and now lost the ability to work 2 jobs and only have one but it'snot enough money?

This is why I hate when they refer to being an IC as 'owning a business'. It opens you up to stuff like this. Are you able to call and explain it? Or maybe send a written explanation?
That is ridiculous they want 3 years of returns. Sounds like they're hoping people don't have their shit together and they can avoid paying them. I only had to provide 2019 returns.

That's when you apply for PUA. Almost every question you asked is address on PUA. That is exactly what PUA addresses. Not everyone is 100% guaranteed to get it but its worth a shot to apply.
