CA LADIES- The newest and sweetest tea on AB5 yet
A woman who had a romantic relationship with (married) Asm. Phil Ting has come forward as a whistle blower, exposing the corruption that got AB5 passed. Carmel Foster is an immigrant, single mother from South Africa and works in the gig economy as a housekeeper/caretaker. In a 3 part investigative series, you can read about it:
(All 3 articles take about 10 mintues total to read)
Part 1: https://www.commdiginews.com/politic...uzZmhgcW9M17gQ
Part 2: https://www.commdiginews.com/politic...lJDs_rN1U1ZRuc
Part 3: https://www.commdiginews.com/politic...JMSsSE4c6XimDo
The TL; DR: Asm. Phil Ting contacted Foster through a dating app called "name your price"(which looks suspiciously more like escorting/human trafficking),posted a fake photo, and did not tell Foster who he was, nor that he was married. Through this relationship, Foster was sucked into the AB5 legislation where the unions crafted her testimony (on behalf of AB5) to the Assembly Committee (would not let her change it) and had her testify before them last April. Lorena Gonzalez would not speak with her before or after the Committee, despite Foster requesting to do so. Foster now is speaking out, stating that AB5 is not about helping workers, but rather to enrich unions. She also states that she considers AB5 a human rights violation against the Independent Contractors of CA.
Another Story
The Employment Development Division, the agency tasked with investigating misclassification and enforcing AB5 appears to be employing Independent contractors. They need extra help due to all the unemployment claims filed during the pandemic, which cannot pass the three prong test of AB5. Here is a job ad posted to FB:

If this info is true, then not only is the EDD breaking their own law, there is no oversight as an agency cannot investigate itself. Please note the position pays $14 hourly, which is also not minimum wage in many cities here in CA.
Lastly, I don't think I've talked about the upcoming elections very much. You have up until 15 days before the election to register, which you can do online here: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/vot...istering-vote/. CA is mailing mail-in ballots to every registered voter this year, so voting is easier than ever.
80th District (San Diegoish) Ladies- Lorena Gonzalez is up for reelection, and her opponent, John Vogel has explicitly stated his intent to repeal AB5. www.vogel4assembly.com. Gonzalez has not issued a statement regarding Carmel Foster.
19th District (San Franciscoish) Ladies- Phil Ting is up for reelection. His opponent is John McDonnell. He does not have much press or info about his campaign, but is running as a Republican, many of whom oppose AB5. If he explicitly issues a statement opposing AB5, I will update this post. https://sfpublicpress.org/news/2020-...-assembly-seat Phil Ting issued a lame apology for the Carmel Foster stories on his Twitter.
Closer to election time, I will make a post with a voter guide with every district, detailing who is for/against AB5. Cheers!
Re: CA LADIES- The newest and sweetest tea on AB5 yet
Do you think any of this will help overturn AB5 soon? Honestly, it's been an utter nightmare since it began. Many of my friends left the state entirely, but I have a daytime career that has a lot of jobs and opportunities for growth out here (a bit frozen atm due to covid) and I'm terrified to move to any kind of online format that could be saved easily. T^T Additionally, the fallout for so many other businesses has been nightmarish as well. I know a bunch of hair stylists that went about declaring themselves as LLC's, but apparently it's been very costly on top of the fee to register as an LLC, or so they've told me.
