Smart move, connecting to the truck with the Landoll trailer. Those will have graded cargo securement chains on them with a considerably higher tensile strength than the trailer safety chains.
Like so many that I see - especially the weekend warriors I constantly see on I95 traveling between New York and Florida - they probably had too much trailer for the truck. I really wish they would crack down on this because these people are a danger to everyone else on the road. When you exceed the tongue weight on a rear hitch, you turn the rear axle into a fulcrum and take weight off the steer axle. This impacts your ability to steer, especially if you have less than half the weight of the front end actually creating force against the ground. If they have to steer on a slick road or do any emergency countersteering, they’re fucked. Likewise, too much weight at the rear, and it actually becomes even more unstable.
I really wish they’d require a trailer endorsement- especially for rear hitch trailers - which mandated the person learns about and can demonstrate that they understand not just maneuvering a trailer, but trailer loading and the importance of doing it correctly. But lobbies such as AARP have way too much fucking influence, and heaven forbid if we didn’t allow a retiree to put me and everyone else on the fucking road in danger because they want to buy a 40’ RV trailer than attach it to a 1/2 ton pickup. ‘Murica…
And there’s my nerd rant fir the day.
Yeah, there's some scary trailers out there..
Glad the dogs were OK.

Wow! I just went back and looked at the pics in the 1st post. That is one lucky couple. Can't believe the trailer safety chains held. Would like to see more pics of the rigging to secure the truck while rescuing the couple. The rear truck axle dangling, this is better then the scene in Jurassic Park!
But this one didn’t have dinosaurs…
Didn't need 'em.^
I remember as a child, driving w/parents, along a CO road, w/a sheer drop along the side!
They’re generally intended for vehicles that are driving into them, not so much careening into them. They have their limits.
This is what they have in South Korea:

If that is what they use everywhere it must be awfully expensive. Why not put up a sign "DO NOT DRIVE OFF THE ROAD"
On the other hand, there are design standards routinely ignored pursuant to an 'exception to policy'. One is often inclined to think highway designers have never driven an automobile.
Wow, Idk you were there!
Area II hmm
