Just watched "Ma" with Octavia Spencer
It was a bit uneven, but still good. Octavia Spencer gets to play the psycho, and there's a bunch of teenagers she torments. All in all it's not a bad movie, if a bit uneven. I'd recommend it if you got a slow night.
BTW: Octavia Spencer played the best friend whose husband beat her in "the help."
Re: Just watched "Ma" with Octavia Spencer
I saw it when it came out in the theater, and I enjoyed it too. :)
Re: Just watched "Ma" with Octavia Spencer
When I say it was uneven, that has not a lot to do with Octavia or any of the other actors. I'm sure Octavia got a kick out of playing the psycho. The actors can only do what the director tells them to do. It's what they contract for. If it was uneven, then it's his/her fault (the director). But I actually enjoyed the movie, and I'm not usually into Horror as a genre. I mean, there's been a few Horror movies I've liked but not many. "Ma" is a lot more like "Psycho," this nut that seems normal but is a danger to everyone around her, just like Norman Bates.
Re: Just watched "Ma" with Octavia Spencer
Just thought I'd add one or two things. I mentioned one or two Horror movies I liked. The Original Nightmare on Elm Street is probably the best ghost story written in 50 years. Nightmare on elm Street 2 is probably the most unintentionally gay movie ever made, I mean Freddy SPANKS this kid. You can make a gay horror movie, that's fine, but if you didn't mean to do it? Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is not bad but it's also the point where the series takes a turn to the cartoonist. After this one he's all comedy. I barely remember Nightmare 4 so I can't really comment on it. Nightmare on Elm Street 5 is horrible, but it does have probably one of the best scenes in the entire series. The one where Freddy talks to his Mom. That's a good scene, but the rest of it I can do without. Freddy 6 is fucking terrible.
And don't get me started on the Friday the 13'th movies. I don't know how anybody can like those things. The guy's a BLANK!

My favorite horror movie is The Descent.

The Descent wasn't terrible. It's pretty dark, but I guess if you're watching a Horror film you don't really want to go out on a light note. Plus I like the director, Neil Marshall. All in all, there are pretty few horror movies that I really like but that's because they don't even try.
Ever see the film "Darkness Falling," it's got to be one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. It's about a Ghost that comes and takes your teeth. Literally no thought was put into this movie. And that's my problem with the Horror Genre, they just figure they can get people out on dates or something, buy tickets, and then make out through the whole movie. They don't even TRY to entertain you.
You wanna see a real Horror movie, watch "The Mist." Oooh, or check out "Mama." That's a ghost story as well. And they actually make an effort with both.

I consider The Descent a real horror movie. That's why I said it's my favorite. :) I think I've seen maybe one or two YouTube clips of The Mist, but maybe I'll check it out sometime.
Re: Just watched "Ma" with Octavia Spencer
I think they made an effort with the first Descent, I know there is a Descent 2 but I haven't seen it quite yet. Mama is more of a Horror fable, so take that for what it's worth, The Mist is based on a Stephen King Novella. It's pretty good.
