Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
So i was coming home from a regular night of dancing and i was driving with three female friends my coworkers really in the car. A cop pulled us over and said he pulled us over because there were two people wearing hoodies in the back seat which they were and there software alerted them to pull us over because of that.
how the hell is this legal? ,any advice would help.

Re: Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
People wearing hoodies inside the car, and in the back seat, late at night, could have been hijacking you. Reasonable suspicion. Be glad they are looking out for you.

Re: Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
Probably a crime was committed and their software alerted them they were on the lookout for 2 men in hoodies and they fit the profile.

Re: Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
To legally "stop" you there must be a "reasonable suspicion " that a crime may have been committed. It's a gray area. I've been stopped on "hunches" and even breathalyzed without probable cause. Couple times they claimed I was on my cell phone. Both times I showed them my call history to prove I was not on a call. One time my phone was being charged.
If all he did was stop and make a noncoercive reasonable inquiry then he probably didn't do anything wrongful. The part I find troubling is that he said his "software alerted him ". What software ? Now he's a robo-cop ? I'd like to know more about such software.

They drive around with a laptop with all your information they can pull up. They stopped my mom when she was speeding and they asked if it was me (I wasn't in the car but they ran the plates first) behind the wheel after seeing the last name on their search since I was arrested for a dui and driving on a suspended license a few days before. (This was years ago).
They also get alerts from 911 dispatchers when someone reports a crime and what they were wearing & physical appearance.
I've now decided I would never date a police officer again, they can pull up too much information about you. I had one run a background check on a sheriff in the past I was supposed to go on a date with as a favor through my mom's friends husband LOL.

Re: Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
I'm think it was racist. I went down to the police dept and after talking with the capt after raising my voice. He said i can write a complaint letter to the companies. He wrote these addresses down for me.
What should i write in my complaint letter to these companies. Stuff like this i think will just make cops pull black women over more then white women.

The first one the capt told me is the camera maker and the second one is the software maker.

Just write that you feel this is a case of out and out racism.

In the United States it's legal for cops to "profile" people.
Law Enforcement in the United States exists to enforce laws on the books and close cases. They are not obligated to "serve and protect."

If you're really concerned, you can talk to a lawyer or contact a civil rights organization like the ACLU or NAACP.
If you weren't searched or arrested, the police probably didn't do anything illegal, but a lawyer would know best.

Re: Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
Unless there was a specific call made in matching the same description it would seem it is racist. I’m not sure if they’ll see that though. Most people have a hard time owning up to their behavior-even of it was unconscious rather than intentional harassment.
I’ve been pulled over for being a stripper, the cops would wait for us every night. I even went through some sexual trauma after getting pulled over. I wish I would have said something. I wasn’t r*ped or anything, but it was more verbal degrading, but still disgusting behavior from a cop. They think they can get away from it too.
Cops are supposed to protect and serve. If it was racist then you could save someone’s life by holding them accountable for something “small” before it becomes a life or death issue.
If you do write a complaint. I would say,
Dear _____(police department)
I would like to file a formal complaint against _____. My friends and I were pulled over on (date) and (where.) I believe we were racially profiled because_____. I would like a formal apology from the police officers and for those officers to attend educational classes on racial profiling. I fear for my life when I get pulled over; therefor,it causes me unnecessary emotional duress. I hope the officers and the administration can understand how racially profiling is harmful to the community and do not do this in the future.
Unless you get a lawyer, I think that’s a pretty good place to start.
I’m sorry you have to deal with these daily indignities. I know it eats away at the soul.

Re: Pulled over for friends wearing hoodies
So i tried to file a compliant last night and they said i could not file a compliant and i would have to call the camera maker and the software maker to complain.
What do i write in my compliant to them? i think having cameras like this is 100 percent racist and the software is very very racist. It's like it's almost geared towards black people almost.
am i wasting time. should i just let it go? ,im just amazed stuff like this exist even after the riots these days.

If you're really concerned, you should contact a civil rights lawyer or a civil rights organization. They would know best, whether or not it's worth taking action.

It’s not for me to say what you should or shouldn’t do. You have the right to protect your mental health if your don’t want to engage; however, I think you should say something. It’s empowering to speak your truth.
