Ranked: The Best And Worst Cities For Women In America In 2021
Want to find the best places for women to live in America? Or perhaps you want to avoid the worst places for women in America? An annual list of the best and worst cities for women has been released, and the 2021 report also shows how women are faring in the US today and where they can find the best opportunities relative to where they live. The report was issued in time for the upcoming International Women’s Day on March 8 and Women’s History Month in March.
According to an analyst, the report was also inspired by the sobering statistics when it comes to women in America—including the fact that women still represent almost two thirds of all minimum wage workers in the country. “The report was prompted by Women's History Month, and the fact that women only hold 23.7% of the seats in Congress despite making up 51% of the U.S. population.” “With this in mind, we wanted to identify the most women-friendly cities. We did that by looking at economic and social factors, as well as healthcare."
The cities were compared across key indicators of living standards for women, using data like median earnings for women workers, preventive health care, female death rate and more.
This year, San Jose topped the list as the best city for women in America. "There are several factors that contributed to San Jose being at the top of the list, including one of the lowest unemployment rates for women, high job security, and the low share of women living in poverty.”
In addition, more than 90% of women in San Jose were able to afford a doctor visit in the past year. The city has an almost 91% high school graduation rate for women, among the highest in the country. But San Jose's strongest suite is healthcare. “It has high quality hospitals, more than 85% of women have a personal doctor and the female uninsured rate is the smallest nationwide.” “Most women report being in good health, and the city tops all the others in terms of preventive healthcare. San Jose also has some of the lowest obesity, death rates amongst women, as well as high life expectancy."
Memphis sat at the bottom of the list. An analyst says that the biggest factors holding Memphis at the bottom of the list include the unemployment rate for women, the large share of women living in poverty and the low high school graduation rate for women. “The city also ranks low in terms of friendliness towards working moms, women's equality and babies.”
In addition, Memphis's share of women with good health is one of the lowest in the country, as is the percentage of physically active women. “As a direct consequence, the city has a large share of women who are obese, as well as low life expectancy for women.”

Wow, can't believe Miami made the list. Seems so high in crime. Maybe it's changed, haven't been back there for a while.

I don't think they looked at the crime rates. If they did, Anchorage, AK would probably be the worst. Here's a list of cities with the highest rape rates:

We've had a few of this type of threads..
From personal experience, & reading the news, most cities are unsafe, especially for women! ..
I'd never live in the main city here, even my (somewhat) safer burb is better but no to cities.
Re: Ranked: The Best And Worst Cities For Women In America In 2021
I live in Durham, NC. But, I lived in Indianapolis, IN and worked in Louisville, KY before moving to Raleigh, NC and last, Durham, NC. Two of the bottom 10 and two otherwise un-ranked cities. I have to agree, having visited Miami many times, I don't see it as a top ten for women city. I have been to every city on both lists. While SF has its charms, the homeless situation just makes me so sad. I don't know how I would live there. LA, SF without the charm and climate. San Jose, LA, just somewhat smaller population. Washington, DC -what to say? The poverty, the lack of opportunity outside of government jobs. No, just no.
I do like New York City, but, I definitely would not want to live there or attempt to run a small or medium size busines there.
Durham, NC. Well, Durham has moved way down in my estimation. It's no longer a business friendly city unless you are doing coding, or some other e-commerce start up. It's schools are a shambles and the covid response has been pure fear mongering. When Daughter graduates in the June, BF and I are leaving for the coast. Raleigh has a much more businss friendly outlook regardless of industry. It's covid response, early was ruled by fear, it has gotten somewhat better. At least the schools opened earlier and are not nearly as foolish as in Durham.

I am surprised Nashville is on the list!
SF is beautiful and I loved my time there, but I saw so many homeless - including young people the same age as my ex and I - and it made me so sad. Everywhere else on the best list is too expensive for me.

Nice, Indianapolis. I'm not surprised. Yet another reason for me to hate it here. Pretty much any red state is likely to be bad for women.

I will always love San Francisco and I enjoyed living there. However, I enjoy the small yet cute area of emeryville even more. Meanwhile, San Jose has super strip mall quality to it. I would not live there but there's worse places to live in California. I would pass on living in Los Angeles because I never liked it. San Diego is pretty cool but has pretty lackluster nightlife.I would also pass Seattle... I am just not into living in Oregon or Washington. Nor I am into Boston. Austin is pretty and has a somewhat cool nightlife. DC is only great for political stuff only.

Nashville has some sketchy neighborhoods.

LOS ANGELES on the best city list?!?! bahahaha. This dumpster of a city has the crappiest men who treat women like they are all disposable and use them like a revolving door LOLLLL. I dunno, I think nowadays it comes down to affordability. Things aren't getting any cheaper in life.

Parts of Los Angeles can be pretty sweet.
It's all relative. Americans are all about day to day quality of life.
