All ethnic dancers please read
All of us have been faced with hiring discrimination as dancers of color, especially African Americans and Latinos. This is the new millenium and we must fight back.
The customers for the most part like variety, but the fat assed, bigoted midddle aged white bastards who run these clubs are our demise with a few exceptions.
Girls, here is what you MUST do BEFORE atempting work at the better clubs:
Go in with a male escort and have a drink several times on different shifts to notice the racial breakdowns of the dancers. You can sent your husband or boyfriend in to do this for you if he is knowledgeable of te business.
Next , call to see when the person who hires is in and go in at that time but go with your guy and sit and hve a drink first. Tip your waitress extra to get the manager for you. This way you will know how many other girls of your race are working and you can intelligently throw that back in the managers face if he says he has too manygirls or is not hiring.
I spoke with a person who heads an agency regarding our rights as dancers in this matter and he has successfully handled several issues like this. he says the hiring issues are blatant discrimination. Some clubs won't play black music, but he says that is their prerogative to decide the music format. What is needed is a group of girls who has been "brushed off" to collectively contribute $5000 and he handles the case.
Too many dancers don't take this seriously, but when white girls walk into any club in the country and go right to work and we as women of color who are 8's and 9's are forced to work in 2nd tier clubs, we have goneback to the Jim Crow era.
I make most of my money off white patrons as do most of you and it is the clubs that deprive us th opportunity to have earnings somewhat equivalent to whitegirls who match our lvel of attractiveness. I have many times outsold white dancers I work with. When everyone is given equal opportunities all races benefit.
A girl I worked with in Anchorage AK at the Bush Company opened th doo for other blacks to work there b using her media connections to show on the 6:00 and 10:00 news how they were discriminatory in here hiring practices. Now black girls who are attractive are hired without a glitch.
Houston has made some progress as the top 2 clubs there Treasures and St. James have a large assortment of women of color and Treasures is one of the highest volume and most popular venues of men in the country. The Ricks chain is still bigoted there but their predominately whiterocker operations do poor business in Houston.
Sugars in Austin TX said they were trying to find room for me yet in several visits to the club I only saw 1 black and 1 hispanic girl.
When a city has 30% hispanics, 10% blacks and 5% asians and you can't find enough of these races as dancers in a club to count on 1 hand, someone is a bigot. No one argue with me on this one!!
We can make some gradual changes. Some of us have connections to give clubs bad press who discriminate. Let's do it.
DJ's face the sme contempt. Black are at thefrefront of the music industry a nd are some ofthe best qualified for hyping up a crowd in the industry. Houston TX is home to 800,000 blacks and I've seen 1 black DJ. Where you don'texpect to find blacks are the better opportunities. At Planet lockwood in Billings MT they have a black DJ AND bouncer. In rural South Dakota a black DJ worked Pheasant Season. In Anchorage AK, 3 out of 7 titty bars there are black owned. The Red parrot in El paso is black owned.
In Las Vegas Crazy Horse and Olympic garden have a large racial mix of girls, but it ishard to get in.
Keep the figt alive and post your successes and problems on this site. Tell othrs who hve had hiring problems what to do. Make sure these girls actually have the looks and personality to actually have a chance in the clubs they tried to get hired in. Let's face it, some of our people don't have what it takes to make it in the nice clubs. But for those of us that do, lets communicate and we can make some changes.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
And watch out for clubs that force black men to sit in the worst seats in the house or tip to get the same seats that white guys get for free.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
U made a lot of valid points. I do not agree with all of them, but they are still valid. I may have figured out one of the problems with getting hired: the thing about having a boyfriend/husband/male escort go with you. Its good for casing a club to get a feel for the scene, but when u r talking to a manager having a guy with you is not the optimal situation because of the way clubs are. A lot of clubs simply think pimp, pimp, pimp when u go for an interview or whatever with a guy.
Its a universal club thing whether the girl is black, white, asian or whatever....they shy away from the ones they perceive as having pimps. It does not matter to them if u do or don't, but if u do they don't want to know and they do not want to see him at the club. Clubs work on first impressions. Once the club gets to know you or whatever its a different story, but off top they are stand-offish.

This really isn't the place for this post (my post, not Tina's), but since you have no email and I can't message you because you're not a member (wink, wink), I just wanted to thank you Divyne for your posts. You've made several recently that I think were very positive and on the mark. :)

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
>:( I feel what you are saying Tina. A few of my non-black girl friends say that this racism at clubs does not exist. They are the ones who suggested that I try this business. They said I could make a ton of money because of the way that I look. But I have called clubs from the parking lot to ask if they have auditions, on the phone they say yes come right in. Upon arriving to speak to a manager, they tell me they have no openings. Right now I work at a small inner city club. The money is alright (better than 10hr) but I know I could make a ton more at any of the upscale bikini bars in NJ. So right now I am on a mission to get hired at one of them. I know I have to work extra hard to get hired but all I need is a foot in the door and I can take it from there. I'll let you know how I do.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
I'm a guyanese dark skinned girls and I thank you Tina and Ebony for bring this point across, because it's not fair to us girls of other races than the white race. And it is a racial setting that we are in. Esp. in NYC come most of the sirls in the upscale scene are white and it's easy for them to say its not a racial thing because they are the ones that get the job on the spot. I been to clubs that said they are hiring when I talk to them on the phone like 5 minutes earlier then they give me that run around as wel. And dont me wrong I have a lot of white friends. I have worked at an upscale club but it is harder for us dark skinned people. ???

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
I'm a non black dancer but I'm hearing what you girls are saying. I see it all the time. I live and work in Philly and we have a very good ethnic mix of customers that come in. But why is it I always see black customers getting dances from white girls. The black girls at my club have some of the best bodies in my club and yet I see them struggleing often. I totally agree with you all, it's definetly not fair. My hat goes off to all the ethnic dancers that are in the business. I don't know what you're going threw but I can't imagine it's easy.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
I always talk to club managers alone. They never see my guy or sometimes I leave and come back in alone. This is a serious problem and if I were a white male and owned or managed a club would have a good racial assotment of girls to make sure no one could accuse me of being racist. Any savvy businessman would have proper integration.
As far as black men buying dances from white girls that is a long topic but it just goes to show that guys like women different than themselves.
-
Pryce I didn't know where else to post
and this is a serious problem. No other industry in the country is as blatantly discriminatory as the mens club business and any white person who is truly not racist would not condone any form of racism.
I am not suggesting women of color who are not truly 8s, or 9s or whom are not articulate be hired in more upscale venues. But when women of color who are of comparable quality of the white dancers employed at a higher end club are not hired or are steered to other clubs run by the same owner which are more on the low end of the spectrum, that is not to be tolerated.
All women of color who dance in decent clubs DO NOT struggle to sell dances. Just as all white girls don't work the floor well some black ones won't either. In the last club I booked at both times I worked I outsold all the white girls by a MILE and this club pays us a bonus for selling over a certain amount of dances in a week.
Given equal opportunities non white races have close to equal opprtunities to earn comparable money as whites.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Whew Tina and Ebony, I do feel ya too. I also have been frustrated into getting hired into a upscale clubs. I'm African American and I've gone to clubs to clubs and they all tell me the same thing " We're not hiring".
I work in a nice club but the problem is it is sooo far from my house and I was trying to find the one close to home. As u mention Treasure and St. James in Houston, I've gone to Treasure at least 5 different times and they didn't hire me. I remember one day a black girl came in before me asked the front door girl to speak with a manager about dancing and she claims t hat they weren't hiring. When I came in after she left I didn't get a chance to say anything and she said we're not hiring. I found out that a week later a white girl got hired and even my boyfriend's friend's girlfriend got hired there couple weeks ago!!! That really made me furious >:( and I dont know exactly how many black dancers they have at Treasure. I know I can do it!! There are times I've made more money than white dancers and honestly I have the best body than anyone in that club and they tell me they think I should be a model!
-
To Hershey and Ebony
As far as Treasures goes, if you have girlfirends who already work there, since most girls in Houston are hired in 5 or more clubs and club hop, get one of your white friends to take you in with her and tell Bill or Mitch to put you to work. St. James was hiring pretty liberally but I haven't been there for 6 months.
Ebony, you live in an area with strong ethnicity. IF you could substantiate your case an get other girls to get rejected in certain clubs you could get the NAACP or other possibly more liberal organizations to "stir" up some bad publicty or confront the clubs. Don't take a no lightly. You don't have to work in lower end clubs because of the color of your skin and white men buy lots of dances from non white girls. It doesn't matter if black men buy from us or not (some do).Houston has a lot of educated upper income black men and I hav done well off of some of them, but many white people think that more black men spending money on black women is the issue. While it would help if moreblack men did acknowledge us, a polished attractive and articulate black woman who hustles and who is friendly and non-ghetto acting can compete quite well with white entertainers. And just like with white dancers if a club hires a batch of girls no matter what race, some will not be able to make money and leave and others will stay.
Keep us posted on your successes. Where else hav you worked in Houston Hershey? Treasures has quite a few black girls and hispanics, but as Bill told meit is timing getting in there and he said he needed more Asian girls. Everyone wants to work there and they are going to hire the cream of the crop white girls now since they hae so many dancers. I had a lot of girls whom i worked with at ST. James who would let me go in with them.
Keep us posted guy on your successes and problems. Together we can help each other accomplish our goals.

Tina, I think Pryce meant it wasn't really the place for him to post saying that he appreciates Divyne's comments - not that it wasn't the place for you to post this.
I definitely feel for you girls and I agree that racism shouldn't be condoned in any form in any industry. I'm caucasian myself, so I can't even begin to imagine what you've all had to go through, but it must be difficult. I just thought I'd post my support for you all. Wishing you much success! :)

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
That's how I got the job through a friend of mine who is white. I was hired on the spot. I used to work at Rick's and I didn't like it because I wasn't making much money there and I looked better than most of them. They were being competitive trying to make more money than others despite how they look. They'd even break rules in the book to get whatever they can to make money. I'm now working at Heartbreakers which is 45 min. from my house. I could at least try to ask my boyfriend's friend's girlfriend to hook me up at Treasure and see what happens.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Hi. I'm not an ethnic dancer, and I agree that the business is very racist. I don't want you to interpret this as lack of support for your cause, because I agree with it, but in terms of legal stuff can they not say that a certain appearance is a bona fide job requirement? Same as they can discriminate on the basis of sex and race and appearance for actors and models? (And, for example, sperm donors?) Again, I am not condoning this behaviour, but I think it might be legal.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Legally I do not know if they can discriminate based on race, but in that environment it may be very hard to prove race was the deciding reason. As mentioned eariler a protest or other bad publicity may be the easiest way in, but if it fails it may backfire. I don't know about your area, but sometimes club owners stick together, and you may find it hard to get at any club in your area. Good Luck.

I so glad that we all could speak on this topic as mature adults. I thank everyone for their support and opinions. I love yall :-*

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Ladies my name is Max... I enjoy seeing women of all nationalities and races dance. I agree that it is a terrible thing for anyone to face discrimination.
So I am thinking about attacking the problem from a different angle. I am the customer so I am thinking about telling club managers that we are not with the Jim Crow stuff.
Specifically, I am interested in forming a coalition of customers from across the US and Canada to blacklist clubs that are not willing to make customers happy by having a diverse collection of dancers.
Honestly, I am tired of going to second and third tier clubs just to see a dime piece that should have been in the top club. Yeah it's cheaper in the 2nd or 3rd tier club but it is not safer.
Also, I'd like to address another issue. This is meant with all respect to all the ladies, but remember just because a guy is of your same race does not obligate him to get dances from you exclusively. You see as patrons we are fighting a war for equality to and I do not want any club to automatically make me have a white, black, latino, or asian dancer. I want the right to choose, but I want a good selection.
I personally believe that there are beautiful women in all races and that every woman has her own beauty.
To all the ethnic dancers... I am behind you as a customer.
Thanks,
Max

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Some of the clubs that are called underground. I never worked in these clubs but i have seen them and the which are of all race black, white, latin, etc, but majority are of race are force to do extras because of pimps that go into these club to find girls. Its sad and that i guess of give some other clubs a reason to downgrade a girl because of where she comes from or how she looks. And that wrong and unfair to us of race, that why I carry myself with self respect. And I dont feed into I look like an 8 or 4 and i need to change myself for this club cause they dont except me for who I am. I am who I am I. If you like and think im a 10 good for you, if you hate and think im a 1 good for you. ::)

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Although I am about the whitest white gal to walk the earth, I see a discrimination problem not only in hiring practices in clubs, but also in how ethnic girls are treated. i thought at first it was maybe simply because I was working in Idaho, which has a very low percentage of ethnic populace (aside from Latinos). What I see happen so often is that when the only ethnic girls working are on stage, they seem to go almost completely unnoticed by the men. Those same men will get real tip-happy the moment a white gal takes stage again. I don't personally think that's terribly fair, because some of the best damned dancers I have seen lately were ethnic gals and the work VERY VERY VERY hard.... meaning they deserve the same that we white girls get tipped, if not more....
I don't get it, to be honest. The race / color / nationality should not matter.... it should be the girls attitude, and her efforts, that command the attention.
Anyway, just passing through this very enlightening and interesting topic. thought I would contribute my observations relevant to it.

McCain I strongly agree with you. I think there is beauty in each race or nationality. And that's why I like dancing in a club where there is black, white, asian, latin, etc. 8)

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
I am a white dancer working in an all-white club, near two all black club. I legitimized this segregation to myself by telling myself that men have a right to be choosy in their "porn". I became very angry when I heard the doorman advertising our club by calling out "all white meat here, no dark meat." Not only was the rasisim insulting but also the fact he referred to us as meat. A friend told me he did it to distinguish us from the other clubs, but couldn't he just let the men come in and see for themselves. Last night, I heard him tell a man who was leaving, "Well OK, if you want N****s go next door". I was shocked and angered. I want to say something to him, but I am scared. I feel like tolerating racism is almost as bad as being racist. Do you think a middle-aged biggot would even listen to me anyway?
I feel like this blantant racism may even be bad for business because most of our customers seem to be more enlightend than this breed of men who works in these clubs.
Thank you for these posts. I feel challenged now to do something. Whether its to say something or find a club with a better atsmosphere.

Re: All ethnic dancers please read
Yelling insulting crap like that doorguy does is going to definitely cost you business and it should cost him his job. I think you should feel free to tell him where to get off.
I hope that the women of color that have to put up with the bullshit hiring practices and limited employment oppportunities are successful in their efforts to prove discrimination.
