Finally taking the "brass pole" plunge
I called Home Depot and learned they do not carry brass OR stainless steel (at least in my area). So I looked up "metal fabricators" and "metal polishers" in the Yellow Pages. Spoke with the guy on the phone and described exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking to build a more portable setup because I don't want it mounted to the concrete floor.
I'm posting this FYI only because we've had discussion before about installing poles at home. I know there are several sites that sell poles for home use but frankly I don't want to plop down $350+ and not really know what I'm getting or if it will even work for me.
My goal is to have this project completed within 2 weeks so for those of you who are interested I will keep you updated on the process. He might be able to come scope out my garage today but more than likely closer to Monday.
edited for link where I even got the idea to call a metal fabricator (I thought they only did sheet metal and stuff)
I know the link's been posted before but hell here it is again
Day 1: Called metal polisher. :D

Re: Finally taking the "brass pole" plun
Well me and hubby just finished up my pole and stage and though will be hard to explain I thought I would let you all know how we did it. The whole thing cost us under $100 (hubby had a pole but wouldn't imagine they cost that much).
Well first off the pole. We took a run of the mill steel pipe ( I think they carry the galvanized steel pipe in menards or whatever for under $20) and painted it. We opted for chrome paint cause I like the way it looks. But anyways you could use bras or gold or whatever you taste may be. We then took spry lacquer and gave it a few light coats. Then cut it to lenghth. We then mounted the pole to a large steel plate. Which could be done several ways, but the pole we had was threaded on the end and we just mounted a peice to screw it into onto the plate.
We then built the stage. We started with a plywood base and attached it to a frame. The frame was built with room to lay the plate in the middle of it. we then bolted the plate to the bottom plywood (make sure you use big washes or it'll pull through, found that out the hard way). Laid the top with small blocks of wood under the top around the pole to keep it from sagging there. Cut a hole for the pipe and laid tile.
It is completely freestanding and not attached to anything. I guess the pole could still be used even if you wanted to attach it to the celing and floor with mounting flanges.
The whole thing does sound compliceated, but if you are handy or have someone who is it shouldn't be too tough. BTW we had ours put up in about a week. Good luck with whatever route you take and keep us posted on how it goes.

Hey Sapphire,
Try Crown Industries, Inc. http://www.gocrown.com they are out of East Orange, NJ. and they specialize in brass rail's, fitting's and pole's.
I also know of a company that make's 4x4 portable stage's with self supporting brass pole's in the center.I don't remember the name off hand, but I'll bring my stuff home from the club tonight. I figure there's alot of industry outlet's I have access to that I can turn people here on to.
I'll try to post more tomorrow for you.
Re: Finally taking the "brass pole" plun
Justin the metal polisher showed up today to check out the garage (my friends and I have secretly dubbed him "pole man") and boy was he a hottie! :P The garage has a concrete floor and a drywall ceiling. Like mentioned in another pole post, I don't want to drill holes into the concrete so I'll be opting for a plywood base (I'm thinking 5' x 5') in which to secure the bottom fitting. Maybe slap some vinyl flooring on the top and some sort of rubbery nonskid bottom to prevent slippage. Tentative estimate is 150-200 since he will be installing it for me as well. I'll be going with 2" lacquered brass 8ft pole.
ciao for now!
