Health insurance
Hi, I'm a dancer and I have no health insurance right now (yeah, I know, not smart). I'm generally pretty healthy, but I would like to get some health insurance in case I break an arm or leg or something. Does anyone know of any reasonably priced insurance plans? I'm single and I have no kids so it would be just for me. Or should I just go without insurance and stash some money aside in case something happens?
Thank you! 8)

Re: Health insurance
If you aren't a student (student healthcare being the most affordable) My next step in finding a good plan would actually be to ask the person who does my hair or nails where their health insurance comes from. The reason for this is that they are often ICs as well thus being in the same boat as us. I've noticed that reps from the insurance providers will go around to salons since they are filled with ICs and give them the lowdown on the various options. Actually, anyone in a field where they are an IC or otherwise self-employed would be good to ask. When you find something, be sure to research the company (word of mouth, BBB, etc.).
If you do decide to go without insurance, make sure to take preventative measures and get regular dental and medical checkups (cleanings, pap smears and such) until you do have insurance!

Re: Health insurance
Planned Parenthood is a great, affordable place to keep you updated on pap exams and supplied with b/c if you don't have insurance.

Re: Health insurance
Working for Mass Medicaid *joy*, I know that Mass and probably other states have a Division which watches over health plans. In Mass. Its the "Division of Health Care Policy and Premiums" which licences which insurance can practice in the state., I'd say look for that and get infomation from them. They can tell you what plans are aloowed where you live, and generally how much they cost. Also for an individual its always much MUCH cheaper then a family plan.
Hope this helps

Re: Health insurance
Also, age is a factor, as is smoker etc.
Call around for some quotes. I had to pay out of pocket before i started work at a hospital. It can be pretty expensive these days, but we all need it. I had an HMO. Then went to a PPO.
Now HMO with big corp. Not too bad, but they take a hefty chunk out of my pay every other week. :( But i have a daughter on my insurance as well, so that does make up a big difference.

Re: Health insurance
In PA there is the PA Cabaret association (www.pacabaret.org) which is supposedly a national association, which supposedly offers health insurance. I don't know because they don't answer the phone.
The National Association for the Self Employed (NASE) also has affordable health insurance.
You can also just go to google and type in affordable health insurance self employed and see what comes up.

Re: Health insurance
I would say get the insurance now because you never know when you could get seriusly injured or pregnant. :-/
Blue cross and bluesheild is a great insurance plan and cost little $ each month, as low as $42.00.
Good luck and get it soon. Sooner the better! ;)
