~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Here's something to think about. We all know of "certain" movies, books, tv shows that have featured or had entertainers in them. By entertainers I mean of any sexual capacity...stripper, phone sex, dominatrix, web girls, all that good stuff....but how about some of your favorites? I love to read about the sex work, and how others deal with the same issues I have.....or watch a cheesefest like Showgirls and wish I was Gina Gershon.
Here are a few to get started........
Showgirls (movie, Vegas dancers)
Diary of a Manhattan Callgirl (book, NYC sex workers)
Girl 6 (phone sex)
Striptease (Demi Moore as a stripper)
Dancing at the Blue Iguana (Darryl Hannah, strippers)
Exit to Eden (Comedy, BDSM workers)
Okay, you're turn...I'll add more too...

Don't forget "The Players Club"

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
"Striptease" was about the only mainstream entertainment offering about exotic dancers which portrayed the dancers in a somewhat positive light - at least Demi Moore's character and Pandora Peak's character anyhow. Unfortunately, it was about the only mainstream entertainment offering about exotic dancers which flopped from a financial standpoint. Virtually every other offering portrays exotic dancers in a negative light, from Daryl Hannah's "dumb as a stump" blonde stripper to super sluts to ripoff artists to Gina Gershon literally being professionally backstabbed out of a job. However, all of these other offerings made money for their producers!
The only logical reason for this is that 99% of the US general public cannot deal with an image of exotic dancers which is positive. This continues to be bad news for real live dance clubs and real live dancers. This can be extremely bad news for real live dancers who find themselves in court in front of a jury comprised of people whose only image of exotic dancers comes from the mainstream entertainment offerings!

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Merry Christmas :)
I just wanted to say that though there are all different kinds of dancers with all different kinds of personalities, I felt that "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" was a fairly accurate portrayal of the exotic dance industry. Except, of course, the hundreds of dollars that the guys were constantly throwing on the stage and the fact that none of the characters were mothers or students in the stories.
But the day to day stuff in the operation of the strip club, the dancers giving extras in VIP, getting drunk, dating abusive men, or just making bad choices about men in general. Not that any of those behaviors are limited to exotic dancers, but seem to be more the trademark of the young poor or lower middle class women in our society. These kinds of things occur in many different jobs, like restaurant work, or other low paying jobs where most of the employees are under the age of 30.
I was impressed with the writers of "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" because they seemed to have some insight into the exotic dance industry and human nature. I know that it may have seemed to have put dancers into a negative light, playing off of stereotypes, but I think Blue Iguana was more accurate, than not.
Just an opinion and brief movie review :)

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
An older one, kinda mystery ...murder.. "Call Me".
She has phone sex with a guy who is stalking her, she is a witness to a muder by him i believe. And...gets caught doing the dirty on the phone by BF/husband. Low grade type movie....but ok.
Also for reading, this has to do with talking dirty, phone sex....
i believe.
For strange, and some out of the VERY norm stories to read

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
I highly suggest "Turning Pro: A Guide to Sex Work for the Ambitious and the Intrigued" by Magdalene Meretrix. It's how I got into all this. very fun read from a woman who seems to have done it all. Phone sex, escort, dom, street walking, stripping. It helped me make up my mind to stop dreaming and go audition. (this week! I'll let you know how it goes!)

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
I LOVE THE PLAYERS CLUB TOO!
I totally related and found it realistic - single mother trying to get through college, etc. But especially I found it realistic the way they showed how easy it is to get caught up in greed and end up in sticky situations.... ;)

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Yeah I agree with ya Alexa, about the move The Player's Club. It was the first movie I've watched about dancers. In reality the dancers can related to t hat situation when it comes to struggling rasing kids and trying to avoid trouble. I'm in her situation too.. I'm also going through college though it's my last year ;D. I can't wait to get the hell out already lol. I dont have any kids but I do avoid staying out of trouble. I come to work to make money not friends so I bascially work alone then go straight home. I fell in love with that movie because Diamond reminds me so much of me lol.

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Oh I forgot to mention about this. It hasn't came back on tv for a while. I used to watch G string Diva that only comes on HBO and I sometimes watch Strip Search that comes on only Playboy. it's not a pornography stuff just nude dancers dancing on stage, vip or giving customers dances. Just like the one in the club. I liked to watch it because sometimes I'd like to enhance my dancing style every once a while.
The G string Diva talks about what's behind close doors of being a dancer. It's really interested to watch because they talk about family, life, kids, customers and the problems with other dancers in dressing room and etc. I hope it'll come back on someday in case any of y'all haven't seen it.

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
OMG, I LOVED G-String Divas!! My friend and I couldnt wait until every Thursday night just so we could watch it. I even used Ginger as my first stage name because she was my favorite (and she was the one who made all the $$$!!) I even downloaded all the songs used in that series and played them at work, lol. They still play reruns occasionally, but not enough. I really wanted to go work at that club, it was somewhere in Pennsylvania, but a girl there got murdered by a customer and they shut the club down. The Divas in Puerto Rico is still up and running though, so maybe I will dance there some day...

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
I highly reccomend reading a booked called, "Strip City" by Lily Burana. It's a biography of a dancer who danced all the way from New York to San Francisco, retired, becomes a journalist and gets engaged. The Bachelor party is mens' ceremonial rite of passage but what do you do if you are a dancer or ex-dancer? She goes cross country after five years of retirement and writes this book.
This book is amazing and it's eerie how she is able to really hit all the topics that affect dancers as a group. For anyone who has ever traveled and danced, you will recognize lots of clubs she visits and honest descriptions of them. She makes no attempt to justify the dancing culture but does an excellent job of humanizing it! Check it out, I am sure you will all love it. Also you can visit her web sight www.lilyburana.com 8)

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Hey Theresa, I totally agree. I thought that show G string Diva was great too. They also mentioned that the dancer Summer got caught up with the media harrassing her because her customer killed his wife just to be with her. She claims she has nothing to do with it so she had moved to PA to start all over. Pretty scary to get into some deep shit like that. I wanted to know if any of y'all seen the show Real Sex shows? They often talks about sex, sex toys and dancers and etc. What really caught my eyes was that the dancer has a looooonnnggg ass tongue!!!!! I couldn't believe it she was talking about wanting to show it off and show people how to use their tongue when it come down to sex (hahaha). I loved the idea of having male/female dancers feature show at the same time!! There were one on one side and the other on the other side! It was sooo cool too.
I always try to catch anything that I can get to watch about dancers cuz I get to learn about them.

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
I never got to watch G-string Divas....but I have watched Real Sex on HBO, and sometimes MTV has sex specials. They did a show about "Hip Hop Groupies" (do YOU know what a chickenhead is???) and a show about "Escorts" the other night....lightweight stuff, but better than an infomercial.
I love Real Sex, if it ever comes out on DVD I'll snap it up.
C'mon ladies (and gents) more movies....more books.....more more more!!

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
A good book that I read was called Ivy League Stripper, by Heidi Mattson. It is an autobiography about this girl who got accepted into Brown Univeristy but neither she nor her parents had enough money for tuition. So she starts working at the Foxy Lady, a strip club in Rhode Island (I think). She writes about balancing dancing and school, her parents finding out, stuff like that. I read it like a year ago and would definitely read it again.

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
I have G-String Divas on tape too....lol

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
i think the players club is a really good one. i didn't see most of the other ones. i think i'll rent some. i'm reading strip city, very good. i'm getting more books from the library. i had fun searching the library catalog under the subject "striptease" but was disappointed that there wasn't too much out there.

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Ivy League Stripper??? Is that a murder story? i read a book once I think it could have been called that...it has a girl that writes for the school paper interviewing strippers at the beginning? Or it may have been called Harvard something, Crimson something....I know, I have been helpful. ;D

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
LOL, no, Ivy League Stripper has no murders in it whatsoever. The book is just about this girl going to an Ivy League School (Brown University) who becomes a stripper to fund her education. And I think it is pretty darn good book. ;D

Re: ~Media Featuring Entertainers~
Ummm, the show on the Sci-Fi channel starring Traci Lords. She also did some work in the Mortal Kombat movies - music I believe, as she has released her own CDs.
Ron Jeremy has also starred in a lot of mainstream movie work, surprisingly enough.
