DJs
Hey everyone. I have a girlfriend who is interested in becoming a DJ (like just a strip club DJ, she has no ambition outside of that). There are really no female DJ's (well there might be one or two, but really not a lot) and I think it would be really cool and sexy to have one. How does one go about becoming a strip club DJ? Anyone know?
Thanks
Jenny

Re: DJs
I would love nothing better than to see more female DJs in this business. To me it would be natural, entirely appropriate, and perhaps preferable...
I have only seen one female DJ in a topless bar (other than Desiree, who covered for me for 20 minutes while I laid on the floor, deathly ill, raising my head feebly to tell her which button to push, etc.--but the little asshole meth-head manager freaked out, and having gotten the rest I needed, I was able to finish out the night), and while she wasn't all that good, it certainly had nothing to do with her sex!
I think the problem is that this is a male-dominated industry, which is one reason we all have to deal with so much shit. Any female DJ would be viewed by these unimaginative, insecure, and generally just plain stupid manager/owners as something wierd and outside what their pathetic, limited mind-set can deal with.
I have run into this problem myself, as I have a very different style and much more highly developed verbal skills than the average DJ (he says modestly, LOL--but it's true). I also talk TO the dancers, which most of them love but many managers seem to hate because they have never seen it done before. This has proven to be quite effective and lucrative in most situations (except when I worked in a bar frequented mostly by low-lifes, there I only did well during Bike Week, because regardless of the average intelligence of the bikers, I do have a very powerful voice which they respected), but has made it much more difficult to get a job! The average manager just doesn't know what to make of me, and assumes that I am inferior to these slick morons who don't give a damn about the women except as notches on their belt, and have acquired the same old on the surface smooth, but basically vapid manner of speaking--and whom everyone winds up ignoring.
Don't let this stop you! If women hadn't stuck to their guns back when male-domination was much more firmly entrenched we would not see all the women we do (though not as many as there should be) in positions of power in politics and business. It may be an uphill battle but it is needed, so do it!
You have to have a lot of CDs, and make sure you cover all musical areas; when I first started I had techno and heavy-edge rock galore but was in trouble when a woman who liked hard-core R & B, top 40, or 80s hair band music came along. You will have to overcome the fear of the mike, which can be difficult even for someone like myself who has acted, done Spring Break DJing, and as those who have seen my previous posts can attest to, obviously loves to talk a little too much, LOL. Somehow it is different in a topless bar, and I at first found myself nervous with 20 customers even though I had experienced the thrill of having literally a thousand drunk college kids in the palm of my hand. But that only lasts a very short time, after an hour or so you will loosen up.
Your best bet will be to find a club run by women, they are out there, if somewhat unusual. Be warned, however, that any topless bar I have ever gone into looking for work, regardless of the sex of the manager/owner, has had an almost hostile and very challenging attitude towards any applicant. I suspect this is because so many idiots apply, thinking all they have to do is play what they think is cool and look at the women's asses all night. You will be on trial, and they will brutally throw you on the mike without any niceties or encouragement. So work on your self-confidence and walk in that door feeling like you are a winner. Be ready for skepticism and rude treatment. Let it go over your head, look them in the eye, and speak confidently--admit NO weakness or hesitancy. It might help to practice and work up a routine first. Practice saying things while driving, etc., and listen to some of the DJs in the clubs, some of them even use a little imagination sometimes.
Let us know how it goes!

Re: DJs
Had a female DJ named Tiny (who also danced occasionally) when I worked Kay's Bodyshop in Shalimar, FL. She kicked ass, just as much - if not more - than most of my male DJs have. At the Kat in Idaho, Marie took the mic up one night as a fill-in... Never done it before, but the girl was a natural!!!! Told her she might want to consider splitting her shifts - half for dancing, and half for DJing. Chicks CAN kick butt on the mic, and I think we need a few more in the industry.
Girl power and all that fluffy stuff, you know...

Re: DJs
I would also LOVE to see more female DJs but, I have to agree with Ariel most DJs are hired by word of mouth or because of who you know regardless of your skills as a DJ.
