The One Car Theory
The One Car Theory
By: Dr. Douglas N. Graham
What if you only had one car? It would be issued to you by the government when you turned eighteen. Any automobile of your choice. That auto would be your only auto and would have to last you for an entire lifetime. If it wore out, it could not be replaced. Once gone, you would be reduced to other methods of getting around, or borrowing rides from other people. One car and only one for your whole life.
Would you take care of your car or would you abuse it? Would you change the oil regularly, keep it clean, park it in a garage? Of course you would take the best care you possibly could of your vehicle. No going out to the drag races on Friday night. Only premium fuel for your motor. Tune ups, antifreeze, lubrications, maintenance, always you would choose nothing but the best for your automobile.
Would you let your auto sit idly for a year? Never. Would you push it to the limits to find out how fast it could go, or what the roughest terrain is that is could possibly handle? Absolutely not. If you were given only one car for a lifetime of use it is clear that you would never abuse it, you would always take the best care of it you possibly could. You would provide all the necessary maintenance and care your car needed and deserved. Right?
What if you only had one body?

Re: The One Car Theory
??? Uhh...
This may be off topic...but what if the goverment issues you a piece of CRAP?? Could you go to court? Sue? Demand a new one?
What if J. D. & Associates think that the car you recieved is not safe?
What if there's something that you want to be ADDED to your car, like power windows and locks?
Now...what if you could show your car off and get money for it? lol. Wouldn't that be fun?
I'm just tired...and felt like being an asshole. ;)
It's all in love though... ;D

Re: The One Car Theory
except a car doesn't last a lifetime and a body does....so....it doesn't really hold. But, I understand the point and it's true...doesn't mean you can't have a little fun with your car every once in awhile!

Re: The One Car Theory
plus a body can be repaired - new parts can be installed (transplants) - hell you can even add custom features (plastic surgery)

Re: The One Car Theory
very interesting post...it made me stop and think for a moment. fits along with a (Cosmo?) article a few month ago. basically, it said something along the lines of, "you wouldn't abuse/put crap into/ sabotage your friend, would you? so why do it to yourself? it's time you treated yourself as you would your best friend..." it was refering to smoking, self-imposed psychological torment, bad diet etc.
but it's true....how many people treat themselves a whole lot worse than they would someone they cared for? suprising amount...me included for much of my life. i think it's important that we be damn selfish sometimes.....as long as we don't lose empathy for others.
so today, in spirit of this car post ;D.....i vow not to put crap in my body....i vow to nourish my mind and not unleash the self-depricating comments if I get a seminar paper writers block, and i promise to laugh and smile when seeing myself in the mirror 8)

Re: The One Car Theory
I can compare my self to my cars likes alot. It likes fuel! So do i. It likes a washing, so do i! A nice waxing, so do i! It likes to be protected from theft, so do i! We both alarm others when someone violates us actualy!
My car likes to move like HELL! So do i.
Of course the 3000GT. (my benz is on the lazy side.) See i treat my car the way i treat myself.
And of course, yes my cars go in for maintenance, so do i, Teeth cleaning etc!
And when my car is sick, it goes to my trusty mechanic, when i am sick i see my doctor!
OH we both LOVE new rubber to move around on!!! I see the point, and i do LOVE my cars! And my self!

Re: The One Car Theory
I really like the theory that this Dr. brought up. Alot of people forget that they only have one body. They use and abuse themselves, and then wonder why they are so worn and tired later on. What you put in, is what you get out. If you take wonderful care of your body, it will show on the inside and out.

RYAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are wonderful for posting this. I love this so much. It just makes you think. I printed it out and put it up in our bathroom in the dorm and I now have one on my wall. When one thinks of their body in those terms, it makes a lot of the things we as people do seem so trivial---because in reality they are.

Re: The One Car Theory
Ryan ,if you only had one of anything I'd think you'd treat it with more respect especially when you understand it's uniqueness. I don't get the issued by the government part.
The thing about cars is that you can keep them forever as long as they keep making parts for them. Not all our organs can claim the same features.
How well one maintains themselves is pretty apparent in the way they treat all their possessions as well, including cars.

Re: The One Car Theory
The issued by the goverment may have been a way to explain where the car came for in the metaphor b/c someone would eventually ask where the car came from if that part were left out of the metaphor. Issued by the goverment is more logical sounding than going out to the orchard and plucking one off the tree and then scampering out of the way when it fell to the ground. Where would you like the car to come from that would make the analogy an easy understandable one? The car farm, the car tree, the 18 now car issuing agency or what.....I'm not being a bitch but I think you thought about that one part just a little too hard. Its not where it comes from that is vitally important, but you couldn't just bring up the magical free car that has no origin. Thats just what I think it meant anyway. Ryan feel free to answer this if I haven't or if your train of thought about the answer differs from mine.
