managing fake nails w/ makeup/body/clothes etc
hi all, I am getting gel nails this wkend and am so excited--they are supposed to be so shiny and so much healthier than acrylic. Until now I have just worn my natural nails short and red "Helmut Newton model style" b/c I can't get them all long at once, I bump one and break it, etc. and gotta keep them all the same length. But now that the gels are out I am going for it but here is the prob: for you ladies with acrylics or gels, how hard is it to get used to long nails? Showering, body lotion, makeup, delicate skimpy clothing, contact lenses, hugging, sex: is it hard to function without scratching/poking holes in yourself, others, and stuff in general? If so, how long does it take to get used to them? Am worried am going to seriously injure myself b/c I am an accident magnet, am going to impale myself while dancing or something :P Sorry for the dumb question but am worried Thanks! ;D ;D ;D
Re: managing fake nails w/ makeup/body/clothes etc
it depends on how long they are...i have the acrylic ones...when i got mine i started with a more 'active' length and let them grow out gradually (easier to get used to that way imo)...but i'm back in the gym now and decided to go back to the shorter length...
try not to use them as tools (they can still break...only not as easily as natural nails)...hope this helps...even though it's not much...
Re: managing fake nails w/ makeup/body/clothes etc
i no longer wear acrylics but they should'nt be so hard for you to get used to ....as topaz said it depends on how long they are ...also the do break so you might wanna be carefull not to break ...these types of nail are not always as sharp as your natual nails so you should be less able to poke holes into clohes...dont worry you will gey used to them within a week or so
Re: managing fake nails w/ makeup/body/clothes etc
I got acrylic once and couldn't get them off fast enough. The tips of my fingers were going numb, and the way they felt generally just irritated the hell out of me. That was not what I expected. I cracked them off one by one. With vicious pleasure, lol.

I used to wear acrylics. Now I just go natural. You get used to them. The hardest part was taking out my contacts.

I wear gels and they are so much healthier for your nails! THey don't shave off as much of your natural nail with them. They ARE alot more delicate than acrylics though. So don't get them toooo long. You'll figure out an easy length for yourself. As for getting used to them, it's no prob, give it a week :)
Re: managing fake nails w/ makeup/body/clothes etc
PS: they're more realistic lookin' too!!!

Yea I was just about to say the same thing....Gel nails are alot more fragile than arcylics. I've been wearing acrylics for about 6yrs, just recently taking them off. I would also recommend starting off with a really short pair. The hardest problem I had with having my nails was using tampons, and cleaning out my ears...I know it's weird..but I have this thing w/ Q-tips..They just feel so damn good, I dont wanna bust my eardrum. Oh and I cannot forget blowing my nose. That is the worst. A few times I had forgotten that I had nails on and I poked myself...not a good feeling.

Oh my gosh! I agree - it's a total nightmare!
I was told I HAD to wear falsies when I first started dancing and each time I tried to take out/put in my contacts, I always felt like one day I'd end up with my eyeball hanging off the end of the nail. It freaked me out!
No fake nails for me. I just use clear or a pretty varnish. Sally Hansen has a good nail strengthener with a great sheen. I use that, or Rimmel.

Hi Bella! After a lot of procrastinating I am getting my first set of gels tomorrow! I am getting the IBD brand. You made me feel so much better--I am going to get a kind of "starter" length and see how those work out, then go longer if I can get through the day without giving myself an accidental appendectomy while putting on body lotion or something. I am so psyched to wave them around oh so nonchalantly...hee hee :flirt:
Re:managing fake nails w/ makeup/body/clothes etc
Thank you all so much for your input--I am getting a full set tomorrow and thanks to you girls I am so excited! I used to have acrylics and before I could get used to them I, um, set FIRE to one by accident when I was really drunk one night. Yep, my right index nail was a tiny blowtorch as I frantically waved it around trying to put it out. I don't smoke but when I drink I think I do, and I was trying to connect the tip of a cigarette to a lighter and I hit the acrylic instead. Fwammo, it went up like crazy, it was like a Road Runner cartoon when the Road Runner gets the bad karma and gets set on fire. Anyway, I extinguished it in my drink and had this nasty black witch nail for a morning until I made my way to the nail place....I must be more careful with my new expensive gel set. Love you girls!!!! Thank you again for your help!

lolz...that happened to me!!!! It's crazy how we don't even realize the dangers of acrylics. My nail completely melted leaving me a badly burned and blistered thumb....YIKES!!! OUCH!
