Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I thought that would be interesting if we could share some tips.
Fisrt mine: I wash my hair 3 times a week with loreal nutriliss and conditioner.
First I wet my hair , then I apply conditioner on the length, then I shampoo the scalp and when I rinse the shampoo out my length get gently washed too.
Last: I apply a ton of conditioner on the length.
When my hair is dry I put a dab of shea butter or oil the ends. Sometimes I would use a leave in.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I live in the high desert so I only wash mine twice a week to keep it soft. I use Redken "Extreme" Shampoo and conditioner and leave the condioner on for as long as possible. Oh, and when I wash it, I just squeeze the shampoo suds through the length (sort of like milking a cow, lol!) so that I don't break it that way... very gentle like!
I blot dry it with the towel instead of rubbing it and put in the Extreme leave in conditioner. I usually just let it air dry and detangle it with my fingers or a wide toothed comb.
I get a trim when needed, usually every 6 weeks to trim some damged highlighted sections out. I go longer if my hair doesn't need it.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. If I need it refreshed between washings, I will get it wet and condition it.
I use KMS Blonde shampoo to keep the brassiness out of my platinum hair. I only shampoo the top and let the suds fall through the rest.
I use Matrix Sleek Look conditioner to help with my frizzies. It smells so good! I leave that on for 10 mins. everytime. I rinse with cold water. It is supposed to close up the ends of hair better.
I use an ionic hair dryer. It makes my hair softer and is supposed to be less damaging.
My hair is a lot longer than in my pics! Those were taken last December and luckily my hair grows fast. It is probaly down to the bottom of my shoulder blades now, and still growing.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
My hair is to my waiste and this is not new; grr I'm no good at taking care of it though. I wash it and brush it and braid it sometimes and stuff but I can NOT figure out what determines when it is straight, wavy, or frizzy. It always catches on stuff. And I hate cutting it, so itis all different lengths. Most people like it, though, so it must not be too messy... putting oil on the ends is a good idea. I should do that.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I tried today baby oil on my length and my hair loves it!!
It drinks it all.
Thanks for the tip Pamela ;)

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Your welcome SANDRINE. My hair care routine is pretty much the same as alot of you. For long hair, never scrub the ends, the suds while rinsing clean the shaft. I follow with a conditioner and never put the stuff on my scalp, because it will weigh my hair down. New growth does not normally need conditioner anyway.
Also a tip that i use now and again, is to add just a drop of Olive oil to my shampoo and wash, i don't know it just makes my hair softer!
And i just added a little baby oil to me ends, so off to work i go now!

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I have extremely long hair (to the top of my thighs) and I do about the same as you girls. I wash the top and not the length. I usually wash my hair every other day because my head sweats alot when I dance so I feel dirty if I don't wash it. I use a conditioner called chlestoral on my hair. It works really well.

I wash my hair only twice a week also, unless I am gonna sport an updo. But I only do that once a week. I am using Pureology products now. I make sure that what I put in my hair is alcohol free. But I keep conditioner in my hair the entire time I am shaving. I flat iron with a tool that is made of tile insted of metal. And when I section off to flat iron it, I press it to the hair instead of pulling it through.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
My hair's been looking kind of dull lately. I've been meaning to get the ends cut for a while, and I keep forgetting. So a couple nights ago I was getting ready for bed and saw my hair in the mirror and just grabbed the scissors. I took about half an inch off all the way around and added some layers in the front. Then I wet the whole thing down, put 2 minute miracle in it, pinned it up on my head and went to bed. When I woke up in the morning and rinsed it out, it was like a whole new head of hair. I'm going to sleep with 2 minute miracle at least once a week now :-)

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
For everyone who said they had a problem with their hair being frizzy or dry, I would very highly recommend Paul Mitchell's line. I've tried a ton of shampoos and nothing else has worked better for me.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Pantene Pro V works best for me. My hair is down to the small of my back so it gets dry sometimes, when that happens I use some coconut oil. It makes it soft and shiny. I use it in the shower after conditioner as needed then rince with as cold as water and I can stand. Cold water makes your hair folicles close or somthing, leaving them shiny.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Since we're on long hair, I've a question. I occassionally go into the store and look at the hair thingies (clips, holders, sticks, etc.) and buy the 3 or 4 things that look like they would be most effective. It's been probably 2 years since I found anything new that works, and usually I find things that turn out to be pretty useless. Ponytail holders always work (thank goodness) and big barrettes (but most stores only have small ones; even most beauty supply stores). The sticks break and most everything else slides out no matter how I try to use it. I've got long thick hair and I like to have it up when I start dancing so I can then take it down and swing it around and stuff... Have any of you found something that might work?

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Hi Laughter,
I can't imagine sticks breaking...
But I think the perfect updo for dancing is a french twist with combs. They can't see the combs, and you just grab them and pull them out and then your hair is everywhere. To do a french twist you need two combs, preferrably one longish one and one normal sized one. Gather your hair in a ponytail at the nape of your neck and twist it. When its all twisted up, put a finger at the crown of your head and your thumb at the base of the ponytail and wrap the hair. So then you have like a folded rope of hair along the back of your head. Gently just grab the hair to the left of it and fold it under. Take the short comb and just catch the edge of the fold with the comb curved towards your head and facing away from the french twist. Instert it to the scalp, then flip over and insert back into the twist. Do the same with the bottom.
Another good updo that's easier is to just grab a pen or pencil or pretty stick. Pull your hair back into a ponytail on the crown of your head. Twist. Place stick horizontal to the ground above the ponytail and wrap it two or three times around the stick. Then twist the stick so that the top of it is pointing up, insert and push the top down. You'll have a bun with a ponytail sticking out, or if you wrap the whole thing just a bun with a stick through it.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Ooh. Thanks a lot. I'll try it. Does the french twist work for long hair, too? I thought it was for mid-length. You are speaking of special combs, correct, not the regular type? (Can't really imagine using the regular sort)

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I have waist length and I find it hard to make a french twist because it's heavy!!
Maybe Pamela could help because I think her hair are even longer than mine!

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Hi Laughter,
My hair is down past my boobs, about to the middle of my back, not as long as yours, and I do it in french twists all the time. I think it protects the ends.
The combs that I use are a little longer than the "normal" ones and prefferably wood, but I think you could use any combs. Here's a website with a picture tuturial http://www.haarkram.e-something.de/start.html

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
My hair is below my waist, and I wash and condition it almost daily. Spray a little shine spray, detangle with a wide-tooth comb, and air dry. Done. Sometimes I heat up olive oil and use it like a hot oil treatment.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
another thing absolutely necessary for good, strong, shiny hair is a good diet!!! when i changed my diet drastically about a year ago (from eating junk food to eating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of protein) the change in my hair was amazing!! it began to grow out really shiny and healthy looking. people started complimenting me on it and asking what i used. so the old saying "you are what you eat" really does hold some truth.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I just saw your post SANDRINE sorry so late. My hair was down to my thighs, but i recently cut it up to boob length, maybe just a tad longer. When it was that long, i was very limited because of the weight of it. Anything twisted or bun like on the head looked stupid, hair was too high. I could only wear a low hanging ponytail, or barid it up for waves, and pin parts of it in the front up. The back was way too heavy.
Another note, i can do so much more with my hair now, it feels great! Styles i never knew i could. Very long hair may look good, but damn it's not fun. I leraned that, even though my hair is still considered long. I give it 6 months to be back down my back pretty damn far again. I will cut it some again.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
I found wooden sticks work best. Altho, if hair's got some product in it, (gel, etc) it works better. Too clean hair, it will slide out, as will plastic stuff. The one stick I use is from a leather ponytail holder, & stick slides under it. I got another stick, it's long with some "waves" in it. I use both sticks, roll my hair up in a bun, putting them thru it.

Re: Your hair care routine for long hair!!!
Pretty much the same routine as everyone here... only wash 2-3x a week, used to use the Pantene stuff but my Dr told me it has a lot of silicone in it and it is actually bad for your hair :: shrug :: I switched to Dove and am LOVING it. Soft and shiny and not weighted down at all.
As far as french twists go for long hair... mine is down to my waist and thick, heavy hair. I can wear it in a french twist, but the weight will give me headaches the first few times I wear it. But after awhile I get used to it and no problem. Same thing when I move my ponytail around, lol. I generally use sticks, agree with Whirlerz totally, wood holds SO much better than plastic. Usually what I'll do is twist hair up and when putting the sticks in, will press the end of the stick down so it almost touches my scalp and push it along there for a bit and then angle it back up so that it comes out away from the scalp again.
Lena - love the bun w/the pony hanging down trick, will have to try that next time!
