Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
This sort of ties into all the piercing and tattoo threads...
Does anyone on this site consider themselves to be punk, goth, emo, or any other sort of alternative-looking dancer?
Is finding work in clubs (since they all seem to be looking for Barbie) hard? Where are you dancing and what do you dance to? Do you catch shit from customers/other dancers about how you present yrself?
Okay, question-fest is over.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
In my "real" life i am a bit "different" (ha ha different like everybody else) in my styles of dress and lifestyle choices, but i leave all that at the doors of the club. thought i won't change my black hair, i do it in a fashionable manner and try my damndest to be bright cheerful, and universaly appealling, because as bad and stereotypical as it sounds alternative looks only attract a minority of people, and those aren't always the folks with the $. I don't go to work to "be true to who i am", i go to make money. call me a sell out but there's nothing noble about being poor

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I second Azryale. I'd love to be able to get away with dressing how I usually do in the clubs, but the fact is that not too many guys are looking for dances from girls who look like they crawled out of a Neil Gaiman comic. I also work in a job that has a lot of public contact (I'm an intern at a very well known aquarium), so I've always had to be conscious of that when getting anything done. My formerly purple (and pink, and blue, and green, and white, etc...) hair is now just straight black, and I have a stick of Dermablend and a set of clear retainers ready in case someone makes a fuss. Do I love my tattoos? With a passion. Will I let them make me lose my job? Not a chance. The stripping I guess I could do without, but to lose an internship and possibly a chance at veterinary school because of my ink is just silly to me.

A couple of the Suicide Girls are members here....

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
Yeah, I'm one of them. If I lived on the West Coast, I'd certainly try to get a job at one of the clubs they're at. Who are they on this site?

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
As Azrayle said, I leave it at the door.
I am the poster girl/DJ for a Goth club here and have done fashion shows and photoshoots in my spooky drag, so I sometimes get recognized. But all in all, I try to be as universally appealing as possible.
BTW, I always wanted to be a Suicide Girl. I actually think I look almost too normal now!

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I consider myself an "alternative styled" girl. (Septum piercing, vertical labret, tongue, soon to be adding alot more)... I got a decent amount of shit when I danced at the club I was at... not so much from the girls... more from the manager! He was constantly annoyed with the money that I didn't get because of my look. He may have had a good point (that most people DONT prefer that look), but I wasn't willing to change myself as a person to make more money. Of course, the septum can come out, and I'm contemplating taking it out during work at the next club I work at... but I'm a hard ass... my septum is like my baby lol.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
Um, what's a suicide girl?

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I have found that in order to do very well in a high end club you can "talk" about your interests outside of work, however they want you to look like a fucking barbie doll.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
Lena, it's actually a pretty nifty little website, essentially a site where girls involved with tattoos/piercings/the whole "gothic scene" (gawd I hate that term!)/etc can post pics and work in the adult industry. A lot of girls have started posting pics and webcam addresses on there. I think you can find it at www.suicidegirls.com.
And Violet, I understand what you're saying, but think of it this way....in a lot of higher end clubs, the men with the money are middle-aged to a bit older, and businessmen. It's not that they think you're a bad person or necessarily unattractive because you have tattoos/piercings, but what their age group dictates is attractive is very different from what our agre group dictates. I think Azryale put it very well by saying that there's nothing noble about being poor- should I get a job in a higher end club that requires me to take out my piercings and cover up my tats, I'll be more than happy to do it. I'm not out to change the world, or everyone's impressions of what girls with clit rings should be like....I'm out to make some cash, shake my ass and go home happy. I don't think it's so much a push to turn us into Barbie Dolls so much as the managers recognizing what sells and then making sure that it continues to do just that.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I'm a rock girl, and dress the part when I go out, but I haven't really dressed like that at work, since it's not a look that makes me money. I dance to the music I like, though.
There are plenty of punk girls working at my club and they make money - in Austin I think there's an audience for girls with an unusual look. As long as a girl is well dressed and has a nice appearance, an unusual style is fine and can draw attention.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I have yet to work as a stripper where I live currently. I spoke to one place here in LA (the valley) & they told me that they didn't want anymore tattooed women? I would like to strip but after hearing this I wonder how many other places will have this issue with me. I am getting a back piece done right now & it is tasteful but this is LA so I am sure that most of the clientele in the clubs want a dancer who looks like a barbie. I hope that I am wrong but? Right now I am working on getting in shape so that I can find a decent place to dance at. Who knows maybe some places out here are better than others. I also model of artist and make pretty good $ that way but even they don't like tattooed models because they are to distracting to the artist. Well good luck to all of your careers don't let being yourself discourage you from doing what you want.

sweetie-you should come here to Vegas-I don't think the ink or piercings would be a problem here

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I work in LA and in higher end more upscale clubs. I have seen plenty of different types of piercings - hood, lips, eyebrow, nipples, etc and lots of large tattoos that cover the entire back and they don't seem to have problems. I live in the valley too, but work in downtown LA mainly

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
To the girl who posted about what i said earlier -you dont know me. Who said i had any tats or peircings, or that im against looking a certain way to make money? Please-if your going to post things about someone dont assume things that you dont know and try not to be so condescending while your at it.
I happen to fit the role of the barbie pretty damn well. To the point of my going crazy because work becomes my life and my life is work. Barbie is not my friend.
However it just pisses me off at times because I work so much and at odd days/times that I cant have my french manicured pefect nails-done black-or put streaks in my blonde hair like i normally would or dye it because I know thats my bread and butter and the 2 days I have off a week my hair cant be done back after a nice manic panic session or adding expensive extensions.
I think that in order to do this job and make the type of money that I do-you lose part of who you are. Sometimes i have thought about working at a lower end club and being myself more. However-im not myself with these men anyway. Plus-im not working a week to make what i do in a night. Especially when you work as much as I do. I have been dancing a long time and Im about to get out thank fuck. I know what im talking about. But thanks for your input.
More than anything-i hate going to shows or parties where I look like the groupie girls instead of the ones that actually know their shit. Im sure some of you guys on here can relate.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
Uhm, sorry if I offended you, but I didn't try to seem condescending at all. All I was offering was another explanation as to why some managers do what they do. I wasn't trying to imply any judgement on you, or on anyone else, just stating some business facts.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I never do punky/ goth looks at work because it can turn some customers off in the wrongest way- it might remind them of their little teenage daughters or nieces and you can bet that will keep a man away from the stage.
At home, I wear retro Eighties vintage clothes, listen to New Wave and punk and fanatasize about extorting semen from Henry Rollins to have some wicked smart spawn. I'm not sure what category that puts me in.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
When I was djing, the gothic /punk/ different girls were my favorites...(BDD and Dea) and I can't say as I noticed very many complaints about their different look, the music went over pretty well also. Then again we didn't work at a top notch high end club, at our place you could be yourself while at the same time maintaining the fantasy of being someone else(god I hope that made sense), and no one thought badly of you for being different....
I know the girls who appear goth or punk are the ones who get my money......

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
My boyfriend is friends with a girl who dances and she has tattoos all up and down her arms and piercings in her face. I don't know how she does but she is cute and friendly so I would imagine she does okay. I think it might just depend on the club you're at.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
I have more of a hard time now that I'm in Florida, home of the tanned blonde. But I still do ok. I stick to the Elegant Ice Queen Goth or the Pin Up Queen usually at work. Sometimes I sport some straight falls with some UV streaks, but so far my really fun hair doesnt make me too much cash. I get away with most of my plaids, as long as they arent TOO punk, and my spiked collars work except for the 1" & 2" spiked ones. Fishnet is becoming TOO popular with the mainstream girls, so I've actually stopped wearing it too much. I also dont try to go work at very high end clubs. This may sound a lil off to some folks, but hey, if a high class club says to ink, cut down on the make up, etc... it isnt for me, awesome cash or not.

Re: Where My (Goth/Punk) Grrrls At?
The years go by and my hair gets lighter, my skin gets tanner and, well... the money goes up. Sad but true.

Yup.. I sure can... and strangely I used to be the *promoter*. IRL (as opposed to club land) the treatment is very different; I've lost all my scene cred... but then you start to realize how superficial all these scenes are if looks supposedly say *that* much about you.
BTW, Paige... I love your FUN hair. I had to get rid of all my cool falls when I lightened my hair.
