Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
Ok heres a question to all you girls out there. I dont work in NYC but am thinking about it.
I do very well at the club and (clubs) i have worked at prior. I love being pale ie my screen name :)
Anyway-the point is-i have been told that Scores and the other establishements only really hire girls that are tan. I dont look sick-or freaky by any means. But dont want to get a tan! I know coming from a dancer this sounds odd as im normally the palest girl in the club but i do well.
Will it really be this much of a big deal? I think i would look odd tan. Tons of models and pin up girls i know dont tan. However im trying to get into one of the clubs in NY and im new to that scene. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
No woman NEEDS a tan. Some customers simply like the tan look. I do not tan (on purpose), so in the winter my skin is somewhat pale. I have never had a problem with my skin being too white. I prefer skin to be in it's natural state, and I would imagine that some/many customers would agree. Of course my skin goes perfectly with my "look". Why else would I have the name Snow ;D I also choose not to tan due to the risk factors. My dad at 38 had skin cancer, so I am very aware of my exposure. My heritage is French/Native American/Norwegian, quite the mix of light vs. dark skin.
I would advise you to do whatever you want. If you are willing to tan for a job, go for it! Have you thought about sunless tanning??? There are some amazing products out now, not to mention flawless spa treatments. And your skin will look just as lovely in 20 years, without all of the wrinkles and risks of skin cancer.
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
See thats the thing-i really dont want to tan. I look good this way. If i tan i will look like malibu barbie and honestly thats gorgeous on a lot of girls but personality wise it isnt me so even the sunless tanning is something i'd rather not do but for some reason i keep on getting bombarded by girls (well 3 not tons :) that if you want to work at the nicer clubs in NYC there arent any pale girls. There has to be some exceptions right?
Girls from NYC can you tell me if this is complete bullshit or if the clubs really do prefer hiring girls that have that sunkissed look?
Im thinking either the girls that have talked to me either really do think you have to be tan or maybe they dont want my going there? I dont know.
I would think in NYC it would be more open minded. But again i have never worked there.
Thanks for the advice Snow :)
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
If you don't want to, then don't do it!
Try it out as your natural pale self. If you don't get hired or aren't making the cash, cos you're too pale, then you can always try a fake tan.
I personally am so pale that my skin is virtually see through. Most of the guys I've been out with have loved it - it gives me a very vulnerable appearance to them. Most guys in club situation, though, seem to prefer the tan. And most people look healthier and slimmer with a tan.
I am so pale that I went into hospital for an operation. I wasn't sick, just going in to have optional surgery. Felt fine, looked normal for me. The second I walked in, a nurse rushed up and said
"Oh my God, just stay right there. I'll go get a wheelchair for you. Can you remain standing just for five seconds? I'll be right back, don't faint in the meantime."

Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
Gothic I'm in NYC and I have seen some women that dance with out tan and they do pretty well. It's different. :)
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
I am Swedish, very light skin. I do not look right with a tan from the sun or a bottle, no matter how light. And i would not change that. Sometimes that fresh faced dewey look is fantastic under lights! Pamela
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
i'm not a nyc girl but i have never heard of a club that only hires tan girls.. how boring would that be. in this business anything that is "diffrent" is going to attract attention. so a natural pale girl should be an asset if all others are tan IMO.
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
if you dont wat to spend the time ina tanning bed theres other options.. like sunless tanner.. You never want the greasy stuff.. always the foam or creme.. *drys fast* Or atleast in my expierence.. i cant vouch for all foams and cremes just the ones i used..
however if you dont want the tan then dont get it.. its not needed.
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
I look about like Casper. A light fake tan improved my money only the slightest bit. Not enough to justify the cost and effort in getting a tan color.
Stay white.

Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
Hell no! I've never heard of any NYC clubs requiring tans. Personally, b/c of my ethnicity mix, I look better tanned - but this isn't the case for everyone. I think fair skin is very beautiful and clean-looking on many girls.
As for Scores, a friend of mine worked there for a few months, and her look was actually quite Gothic - very fair skin and black hair, dark eyes.
There's also another girl in my club (also in NYC) who does well, and is very fair-skinned with body freckles and dark-brown hair.

Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
Thank you everyone who responded. :) Everyone seems really nice here. Im not going to get tan now. I have to go in as me because there is life after work and also I do well and feel comfortable this way.
NYC is just a big step for me and I really need to land a good job like you wouldnt believe.
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
I'm very fair skinned and had med/dark hair when I started. I made a killing, just don't go to goth to appeal to most. Think more classy, with a little edge.
Best of luck!

Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
I don't tan either, and this use to bother me a little. sometimes people would say you look nice but.....whatever. I realized that I am fair and freckled with reddish hair. As long as I don't color my hair blonde the fair skin is a hit with customers who say a look Irish. I AM!!! lol
Re: Getting a Tan-necessity or not?
I get a good response being pale. I too was told that in my area I wouldn't get hired without a tan so I dottle tanned and got hired. I noticed though, that I actually made about the same money being pale so now the only time I "tan" is when my legs get a little banged up from doing pole work :) and I need to blend in the imperfections. For my pale skin and this purpose, the Benefit Aruba in a Tuba gives me just enough color to still be fair but even out my skin.
Now, the housemom ragged on me about being pale (but she tells me I should dye my black hair blonde too) but I just brought in the Playboy with Dita on the cover and that has ended that argument, lol. In fact, some promo pics I did where I had makeup on to look, well, almost vampiric were brought in and the manager was out showing them all over the club and begging for a large size copy! hahha!
So tanning: not necessary if you look good pale. The caveat being that I think a girl has to really make sure she stays in shape when pale since being tan does hide flaws and make you look thinner. I will also say, that for high volume sporting event nights, you'll still see me at mystic tan just because of the clientel. That is the only time I feel it helps me out $$-wise.
