Eat exclusively raw fruits and vegetables. This is known as the "negative calorie diet" and is marketed as a diet of foods that consume more calories in digestion and consumption than they contain. This is not true - except with celery which is made up of water and fibre and very little else. But it causes your body to produce more digestive enzymes which will speed up your metabolism and cause you to lose weight. A study done at UC San Diego shows it to work faster than fasting. You can also buy digestive enzymes for this purpose. The only downside to this diet healthwise is a lack of Vitamin B12. You need very little, (about 1 microgram a day) but your body will not stockpile it, so you need the microgram every single day. Make sure to include plenty of dark green vegetables for protein, calcium and iron. Very few people want to stay on this diet long term, though.
Also, leave out bananas, avocados and stuff like that.
And exercise. You will be surprised how fast you see and feel results.
Most diet pills and miracle diets cause you to lose a great deal of water weight, which besides being VERY temporary, dehydrates you. If you go on a caloric diet (limiting calories) while not exercising you will tend to shed more muscle than fat as your body is starving etc., etc., and muscle is harder to maintain than fat (uses 50 calories as opposed to 2). So your body will dump it first and keep the fat stores. Exercising tells your body that you are fine, that more calories will be coming, all evidence to the contrary and forces it to keep and build up your muscle stores.
There are people here who I am sure have more satisfactory explanations to the above phenomena.

If you are dancing regularly, you really don't need to to even think about any sort of a drastic diet. I have found that any dancers who accumulate extra poundage (including myself) can generally attribute the weight gain to the high fat content take-out food which we are inclined to order at work after dancing half the night has made us ravenously hungry. To break this vicious cycle, I eat a low fat healty dinner at home 2 hours before going to the club, and I pack several "energy bars" in my dance bag. When the inevitable hunger pangs start hitting, rather than joining in on the club's take-out order I stick with my 'energy bars'. I also totally avoid alcohol at least 6 days a week, as alcohol + fatty food is an even more lethal combination.
But working out helps most of all, since it re-arranges your body proportions along with helping to control weight. I used to 'laze out' on workouts by letting myself believe that continuing a health club membership and having to drive 20 minutes each way on top of the workout time was just too inconvenient, that guys staring at my tits and hassling me at the health club was abuse I didn't need to deal with etc., so that if any flimsy excuse arose I would blow off the workout. I finally smartened up and broke this vicious circle by buying my own TotalGym. This way I can work out at 8AM if I feel like it, or 2PM, or Sunday evening without leaving the house.
If I really need a turbocharged method of dropping some pounds quickly, there is always "Diet Fuel" or herbal products by other names which contain the herb Ephedra. However, you need to be careful when first starting to take these pills because Ephedra is a form of natural "speed" and different people react to it differently. I have jumped into a full dose of my "Diet Fuel" pills after being a caloric bad girl on vacation or during holidays, or if a magazine calls up and says they want me for a photo shoot in a week, and wound up causing myself major league heart palpitations to the point where I couldn't do anything for 2 days except wonder if I should dial 911! If you're going to use these, take a 1/2 recommended dose max the first and second day, and if you don't have any bad reactions you can increase the dose to normal on the third day.
Hi, It's Jackie. Here I play an adventurous slut. In real life I am an ICU nurse. Ephedra is dangerous. It acts like 'speed', increases your heartrate, increases your blood pressure, and puts a lot of stress on your heart. It is even more dangerous when taken in combination with other stimulants like caffeine. There are very few of us that don't eat chocolate or drink some kind of caffeine daily whether in the form of coffee, tea, or diet sodas.
Very small dosages of ephedra may be safe IF you are healthy, have no family history of high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. are not pregnant, and take no other forms of caffeine. The problem is, most women HAVE those histories, especially if they are black or hispanic. The other problem is with the dosages. One typical ephedra tablet that you get in the health stores, on tv, etc. has a higher dosage than the maximum safe dose as shown by research and ok'd by the government.
Ephedra has been proven to cause strokes, heart attacks and death in young people who otherwise would NEVER have had those things. Thin doesn't count if you are six feet under. A healthy, balanced diet and exercise is the only way to lose weight, keep it off, and maintain your muscle and electrolyte balance.

Jackie (of jrockyb) is right. A friend of mine's sister was on 20/20 about two years ago because she had had a stroke of some kind about a week before her wedding. She is now a paraplegic and has very little use of her body. This was from taking diet pills with ephedra - she was a healthy girl of 23..
Also, diet pills are terrible for your metabolism - your body starts to depend on it and once you get of of them the weight just comes back (with usually an extra 5 lbs tacked on!) :(

You have a few alternatives that work if you need to shed a few pounds in a short amount of time:
-take 2 garlic tablets & 2 papaya tablets before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eat lightly for two days and stay away from breads and fizzy carbonated drinks. This is a natural dieuretic... In the mornings have a high-bran cereal.
- there is also a one-day juice fast that gets rid of extra water weight and you still assimilate a lot of necessary vitamins & minerals. It also is good for getting toxins out of the body if you've had a bout of too much partying....there's a LOT of drinking here, but it goes like this:
7(am) Hot water with lemon
8 Apple carrot juice
10 Cup of herbal tea
12pm Large grapefruit juice and large water
2 Large water and cup of herbal tea
4 Large pineapple juice and water
6 Cup of herbal tea and water
8pm Pineapple/grapefruit and glass of water
10pm Hot water with lemon juice
Make sure that the juices are all-natural - like from a juicebar, as opposed to the "oceanspray" types that are saturated with additives..

Thanks so far for the response. As for ephedra, I can't take anything with ephedra in it. I have von Willebrands and it messes with my platelet count. I was leaning more towards ephedra free. And as far as dancing goes, I am not currently dancing, but plan on returning as soon as I lose my baby pounds.
I've taken Xenadrine with Ephedra before, but they do now have the EFX formula which is their ephedrine-free version. Though I, personally, have never taken that version, I do know people who have taken both and said that the ephedrine formula works just as well only with less side effects. Supposedly, the likelihood that one will experience harmful side effects with this version is much lower, but I would still caution you to be careful and - as Melonie said - start out with only a half dose the first couple of days. I don't know if this formula might be something for you to consider. Hope that helps

Ok I guess I'll be totally honest with all of you as part of my treatment......I just started seeing a doctor because i'm anorexic. I've lost 55 or more since Feb and I live on fat free popcorn and oatmeal.....I take numerous amounts of pills everyday consisting of metabolite~vivran~Green tea~kelp~grapefruit tabs~mutivitamins~B12~calcium~fat blockers~carb blockers~Flax oil~fish oil etc etc the list goes on.......I still take alot of those everyday and on top of it I drink ALOT of coffee......my doc has now put me on Zyprexa~a new drug for manic depression~bipolar~& skitzophrenic behavior but I refused to be hospitalized. Youd think i'd be dead right?? I am completely vegan~NO DAIRY, MEATS, EGGS~nothing......just coffee, water, occasionally fruit~lots of salad~oatmeal~ricecakes~fat free popcorn~Equal & my pills.......I dont want or expect or need any sympathy~Im simply letting you all know to try and give advice that my way is definitely not the solution~I used to be b/w sizes 10-14 & weighed almost 160 with 36c breasts......now i can wear a childs size 14-size 2 & I weigh in @ 106. Im 5'4". The saddest part of all is I still am not happy with myself......yes I am skinny now, but i'm not firm & toned. I was walking 6-8 miles almost everyday but I stopped doing that. As far as the eating & pills go~I dont think I can stop......i'm too petrified to go back to my old ways or gain any weight back.....

Definitely stay away from stuff with ephedrine in it. (I think that's how you spell it. I took one pill, one time. I could barely walk because my balance was all fucked up. My hearing went in and out. My vision got blurry. I started to have real bad chest pains and I was hyper-ventilating. This went on for about 4 hrs. after I took the pill. I was so scared. I honestly thought I was gonna die. I don't think anyone should ever take those kinds of pills. But if you feel like you have to, just really really be careful. They're dangerous.
