Everyone knows...
I have been doing event dancing (parties at homes and bars, birthdays, etc.) for a couple of weeks for crowds of mostly 30-50 yr olds. I have been told by the person whom I work for that it is best to choose songs that everyone will know, but growing up listening to *lots* of songs, I am having a hard time in many cases differentiating between songs everyone will know and songs I think everyone will know. So, my question is, how important is it, in this instance, that I pick songs I am certain everyone has heard? Many of the songs I am so sure everyone knows are ones that I don't think would be good to strip to under these circumstances. So far I have used a little of Steppenwolf, Queen, and Rolling Stones... Some of their fun but more cliche songs. I wonder also if there is a point that the song is *too* well known and a less-heard one would be better.

Re: Everyone knows...
Dear Laughter,
I ask if music is provided. If I need to, I ask if there is a certain type of music that they would like to hear: offer current, older rock, pop, country whatever categories you are willing to work with and can provide.
I used to do the "show" then do sets for tips. The show set with one or two themed songs and a few no fail songs. Then, tips to whatever was working with the crowd. After the tips, back to the "retirement" or Birthday Boy. I like variety, and guys love variety ;)
Mix and match what you enjoy working to is what I suggest.
To post on your question: [My question is, how important is it, in this instance, that I pick songs I am certain everyone has heard?]
I believe not very. If you like it it will shine through and they will see you enjoy your job!
Example: Wet Willie Keep on Smilin' is an older song, but one that I love to dance to. The fellas who know it smile ear to ear when they hear it, and the fellas who never heard it like it because I like to jam to it. :)
Good luck on your parties and remember you are on someone else's turf. Get your info # people etc (two/three just doesn't sound right) ask questions! Let people know you are accounted for....
Safey First
Money Second
Fun Third.
If you can't get them in order and maintain them at all times, call it off :)
