Song Exclusivity for a Dancer?
DJ's and Dancers -
Say a girl brings in an offbeat/esoteric song (for instance "Down with the Sickness" when it first came out). She dances to it (very well), and then some of the other girls say, "I want to go up to that song", against the wishes of the girl who introduced the song to the club.
Obviously, alot of songs are universal and nobody really "brings then into the club"....the DJ, if he's on his game, will be the first one to hear it and be like, "Oh, that's hot...I'm taking that to the club tonight".
But what about that one that a dancer does introduce the DJ and all of the other girls to. Does she have exclusivity rights to it?

Re: Song Exclusivity for a Dancer?
At the club I last worked at if I brought in a song, and it wasnt one that the DJ had, I simply tell him not to download it into the clubs computer :) And yes I would tell him that I didnt want other girls to dance to it.
I am that way with that old eighties song by Fuerer, it is mine and mine alone, I had other girls ask me to use it, the answer was always No.

Yes, it is understood etiquette that you just do not dance to a song that you know pretty darn well some one else dances too.
Its been true for almost every club I've worked at. A violation of this ettiquette I've seen results in, "That B**** want to be like me!!!" [grr] [flaming] [grr]
There are millions of great songs out there, no need to dance to other people's music. :D
Good luck with this situation. ;)
Re: Song Exclusivity for a Dancer?
If the dancer brings the song herself--there is no question--unless someone else has already brought it, in which case there is no question, either, LOL.
If it is MY song, and I haven't yet assigned it to any given dancer, this can be tricky...
I have written of this dilemma before.
Having worked in one club in particular which hired anything female that walked in the door--literally--I have had to deal with this more than I care to think about.
But given the choice between playing a song like "Feelin' Love" (Paula Cole) for a beautiful, sensuous dancer who is a cool fellow employee, and will get the crowd in a frenzy--and playing the same song for a grandmother who is 40 lbs. overweight, and will drive every guy from the stage in 20 seconds---well, life isn't always fair, is it.
The choice isn't always quite so clear cut, and this is where I always try to help the dancers be sociable and polite to each other. One good trick for this is to send them to tip each other a lot. Every dollar I have spent in this way has found its way back to me, in form or another, eventually...
Re: Song Exclusivity for a Dancer?
No one will dance to my songs! I will pitch a fit unless it's a club CD. those are fair game.
There was a girl that would do it consistently. And she TRIED to work the stage like I did. I got in her face. And I never gave out the song names/artists to other girls I work with. But please! Cum the f*** on! Someone would have had to make QUITE an effort to find my songs-they are part of my trademark. How is another girl going to play Blutengel after a week of Gangsta rap and tell me she knew My song for years and couldn't give me the name of the album. Hell no. My songs are mine. I look too hard for them and most DJ's have my back.

Re: Song Exclusivity for a Dancer?
This is a pet hate of mine and I like to start an argument with an dancer who says they have the right to a song. So you can understand the type of club I DJ at, we have one main stage and two small podium stages. The action is up on the main stage obviously, and in one night there maybe up 36 shows with each show lasting 10-12 mins or roughly three songs mixed together.
One particular song maybe played twice in an 8 hour period but it doesn't happen often. The dancers will argue over who has the right to use what song in their show and if someone starts using song that someone else is already using then the claws come out. I mix most of the dancers music and don't care if a song is used twice in one night, what I do get pissed off about is when say someone is on stage doing a showgirl theme which started off with Viva Las Vegas and the next dancer comes out to a showgirl theme consisting of the same first song.
We recently had a contest and one of the dancers was bullying another dancer not to use a song because she was using it so I intervened and told her what I thought and said the obvious [apart from alot of swer words], it's a competition do what YOU want to do because you are competing against someone else and so what if they have some of the same songs in their set.
I'll stop now because I could go on about the subject for days.
