Re: Blackout of 2003
No, I wasn't at work...but I did GO to work because I was shopping not far from my club. I was wearing heels and couldn't walk home , so called my fiance and had him meet me at my club while I hung out with the day girls until he brought me sneakers- Thankfully, we lived fairly close by so it was only a 30 minute walk.
My neighborhood was the LAST of everyone in the country to get power, and it SUCKED. But would you believe, that my club had power at 4pm Friday and was OPEN on Friday night. I sure as shit didn't go into work (though I was scheduled), and was ready to fight a battle yesterday if they tried to fine me....but thankfully they didn't. They were planning originally to fine the girls, but made the right decision and didn't.
In total, I was 30 hours without electricity. But the only fun part was that our neighborhood was alive and even the ever-elusive celebs came out to play - We all drank and made smores and walked around with candles & flashlights - It was actually pretty unifying, in a bizarre way...
All I know is - I was in major computer withdrawal - that was the worst part.

Re: Blackout of 2003
I was in the blackout. We had no power or water for 24 hours. It was strange and disconcerting--you kind of have to wonder why millions of people can be so drastically affected, and noone can give any easy answer as to exactly why this could happen. I am not so sure I believe the publicly stated reasons.
Though it cost a lot of people a lot of money, I personally am glad it happened. Candles are a lot of fun...

Re: Blackout of 2003
I was downtown Toronto - in the Eaton's centre....POOF!
The whole mall slips into shades of grey. Store fronts being closed so quickly and merchandise being dragged back into the confines was somewhat insulting to the throngs of bewildered shoppers that were herded out of the shops with doors being locked behind them.
I - along with others totally unaware of what was REALLY happening sorta milled about waiting for the power to return as surely it must, no?
So along with the flow I joined up the march out to the street, and we poured out into the streets, only to find the entire freaking city has done the very same thing! Every employee every customer in every office building every bank every store...emptied itself out onto Yonge street.
Every sign and store front black, dead silent...and the silence on the street despite thousands upon thousands of people packing the sidewalks was surreal.
There was a short bit where as the flow of walking was clogging up traffic stalled and it seemed chaos would ensue, but it righted itself with moments, some regular Joe takes up position at the main intersection and with a big ass grin on his face starts directing traffic!
The crowds cheered and apparantly this phenomena took place all over Toronto - the traffic directing heros.
Sounds kinda goofy but it actually choked me up!
People had to walk home, that blew my mind.
Our neighborhood had power back on 13 hours later. But it was a great evening - we have a gas range so we could still cook we had a candlelight dinner and then sat out on the deck by candle light with a terrific bottle of red wine...
Our entire neighborhood was porch bound that evening, flashlights and laughter reigned. I smiled in the dark and marvelled that this was the first time I ever saw the stars living in Toronto. The night sky was beautiful!
Some one broke out their bongos - isnt that hilarious? And played for the neighborhood.
Its a day/night I will remember forever. I loved it.

Re: Blackout of 2003
Up here in the Adirondacks I'm used to power failures at least once a month. I have a 30 minute battery UPS on my home computer (so my webcam sessions won't be interrupted). Since I don't have access to central water or natural gas, I own a 4000w Honda generator which is big enough to run my water pump, hot water fuel oil burner, microwave, satellite dish, computer, fridge, freezer and even air conditioner. I keep enough gasoline on hand to run it for about 72 hours, and could get another 3-4 days worth by siphoning my car's gas tank (which has been done before when blizzards have hit). Last thursday was just business as usual up here !

Re: Blackout of 2003
I was eating with my sister and the lights went out in the restaurant. We thought it was funny at first because we had JUST received our food, and we thought it was temporary. But then we heard it was serious and that it would last about 14 hours... God I hated it. When I got home my dogs were panting like crazy so we decided to go outside and the mosquitos had me for dinner. I hated it

Re: Blackout of 2003
I live on the 4th floor of a 30 story high-rise in downtown Detroit. I could get in and out, but the folks on higher floors had a rough time walking up. Water was provided by the building and some people spent the night in the lobby. Met some nice female tenants, but no luck yet.

Haha yeah I think there'll be some little tidbits in the news in about 9 months, something along the lines of the Blackout Babies.

You know what really sucks "M". He had it forwarded to him I guess. He couldn't find it on the site either. Maybe the photo does exist, I don't know.
I really apologize for that second- hand photo. I was so taken with it I wanted everyone to see it.
Well, at least I didn't start a "War of the Worlds" epic about Martians attacking or something.
I guess I spoke too soon :-X . I'll check my sources better next time.
