The AIDS rate is high there?
Um, no they are probably blocking them because they are "illegal" immigrants???
It's the Coast Guard's job to stop every floating '57 Chevy truck which crosses the 12 mile limit of US territorial waters without announcing itself and without being able to show passports and visas. ... Coast ... Guard ... The fact that the floating truck originated in Haiti or Cuba or Nicaragua is beside the point.
Except if they make it from Cuba they get to stay.
to tell you the truth, they are trying to block out illegal immigrants.
There are a number of reasons why they are doing that, and i personally believe they(might) are trying to "quarantine" haiti. This is just speculation on my part though.
When haiti has a aids ratio like it does, its important to keep immigration under control. But if this if valid is just a SMALL FRACTION of the reason.
THEY HAVE BEEN KEEPING A CLOSE TAB SINCE THE CUBAN MISSLE CRISIS.
ok, im done.
I agree with Tampa.
Also we have AIDS right here in the USA, and other STDs. The point as everyone said is that they are illegal immigrant. If they dont have a VISA or apply for citizen. They are not allowed into the country. They also have to get shots to get into the country. There is alot of other virus out there like SARS that we really dont know who may have it.
I think the best way for the people to leave is if they have family that could help them out with a VISA or go to the Dominian Republic which might a bad idea anyone.
The only reason that they get to stay is because it is inhumane to return to Cuba to be executed.Quote:

Wow Butchee! Your intellect has impressed us once again. I am still steaming over your thread about how all strippers are hoochie mama's. What now are you going to suggest we all have AIDS?
Cubans recieve preferential treatment because of the large contribution their community makes to the republican constituency. Not, because of the humane or inhumane conditions as opposed to Haiti ect.
Oh man.. ok...
I was in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (more commonly known as Gitmo, the US Naval Base), in 1992. This is when they were having a major issue with the boatloads of Hatians attempting to flee their country and make it to the US, namely Florida. I cannot tell you how many were taken in every day. I also cannot tell you how many were turned away and sent back. There were many children. These people were dirty, hungry, and very ill. Those who were visibly sick, were of course taken onto the base, and put into a designated gated area that had shelter, food, and medical care. We called them "Tent Cities". They would riot, and burn down their shelters. It was pretty much a daily occurence.
By the time dependents were instructed to leave Gitmo, we had a total of 276 Hatian people left on the base, (due to the fact that many others had died, or were eventually sent back). These were the people with AIDS and Tuberculosis. The situation had gotten dangerous for dependents, so we were made to leave and come back to the states. My then husband filed for a humanitarian transfer immediately, and we were got transfer orders to Virginia.
It was indeed heartbreaking to see the suffering of these people. I believe that everyone deserves freedom, but unfortunately, that's not the case everywhere. We saw a lot of death and countless other indescribable sights.
AIDS and Tuberculosis are NOT issues that are contained to just one country. We have a lot of that here too, it's EVERYWHERE. It's a tough call I would say. This is just my opinion of course, but I don't believe that we should go into the country and try and save it. But, when they come to us, such as on boats and other methods, how can we turn them away?
