The good things in the world
I read the earlier topic about the woman who was raped, killed and burned. It is so sad when things like this happen. It makes you despair and lose faith in everything.
In contrast, I had a very opposite weekend. Every year we have an event for the Children’s Home in Tampa. This past weekend, we raised over $110,000 for the children. This link can describe it better and it even has pictures. The article is from 2 years ago but it applied to this year also.
The reason I am sharing this with you is that at one point(a long time ago) , I was one of those kids. If it weren’t for organizations like this, we would all be worse off in the world. You read so much about the creeps who kill people or just take and take and give nothing back. Thank God there are some people in the world who give and care. There IS some balance in the world, unfortunately the press on the Evil gets more play than the press on the Good.
When you grow up and you have nothing, you develop some incredible survival skills. It really trains you to look for the opportunity to take and get ahead and hoard. My sister was in a foster home too, and you should see her pantry! It took me a while to mature into the “giving back” mode and I can honestly say that it makes me feel a part of this world and have some hope. I can either hide or withdraw, or I can take some small step to fight it.
I hope there was/is someone whether a stranger or organization in your life who helped you. Maybe this is a good time to remember that person and find a legitimate charity that supports what you care about and give just a little in memory of that person. It is unbelievable how good you will feel even if you give $50.
I know at this time that we can’t all be givers. If at this time you need some help, there are a lot of organizations that care. Charity is not a bad name; it is simply people who care about other people.
May an angel watch over all of you.

Good post Sitri. :highfive:
Re:The good things in the world
great post... :) Im glad you are a stronger person now because of your past! And I agree, the media always shows the negative, but there are truly some great people out there!
Re:The good things in the world
I agree, we need positive posts too!
This is my positive contribution: I worked a fundraising booksale for CASA today and we raised over a hundred dollars! CASA is a group of volunteers who are appointed by the courts to advocate for abused and neglected children who are involved in the system. I volunteer for them because I was also in foster care.

Thanks for your post Sitri....
In my life I have been helped so much along the way. That I would be doing a diservice to myself if I didn't give back ! I chose to give my time more than $$. I try to volunteer 2-4 hours per week. I just did a 5K race that was to support children's organizations in my area.
Re:The good things in the world
Thanks for the responses.Farrah_Holiday and Lena. It is just so easy to sit back and complain instead of doing something positive.
Like you, a lot of people of helped me during life with no expectation of being paid back or getting something from me. I finally thought,
Hey, I can try and be one of those people for someone else.
And time is as good or better than money. When you get right down to it no one wants to grow up and be a twenty dollar bill. When you give your time instead of money people see you and you meet a lot of good people.
And, if you can't give money or time, there is always blood. I give every 6 weeks.
But something I have noticed in a very positive way is all of the support everyone gives to each other in this BB community. That is worth a lot.
It is nice to get to know you.

Re:The good things in the world
my high school english class tried to teach us that all people suck, that all everyone thinks of is themselves. we read things like lord of the flies and were taught thats how it is....
I was traveling a while back and had some crappy things happen. I found that most people were more then willing to help me out.
So now I say "no matter what my sophmore english class tried to tell me I belive people are generally good"
for the entire boring story:

Re:The good things in the world
Whilst I can't give more of my time (oh how I wish I could)... I do what I can which means donating money reguarly.
There was an old thread placed somewhere around here about Charities and who we all each support. Strippers can be a rather giving lot ... just wish more people realised it.
Re:The good things in the world
I wish I could think of ways I could be more helpful to people in need. Unfortunately, $ is out of the question. Any ideas?

Chad,
There is always a need for volunteers. Find something you like to do and there is some organization that can use your skills.
I always like Habitat for Humanity. You can go and salvage stuff out of old houses or help build a new one for someone. Little experience needed.
