Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
Hahaha Flounder! You know, I was thinking last night about starting a thread exactly like this one! You read my mind. hehe. Alrighty.. Here's my list...
1- "The Shawshank Redemption": Beautifully done, excellent acting.
"Get busy living, or get busy dying."
2- "Erin Brockovich": Same reasons as above, and the bonus was the cameo appearance of the real Erin as the waitress.
"Do they teach lawyers to apologize? Because you suck at it!"
3- Stephen Kings's "IT": I'm usually not a fan of movies made from his books, as they normally don't do them justice, but this was well done. Tim Curry was the only one for the part of "Pennywise", and he did it perfectly. The rest of the cast was excellent also (RIP John Ritter).
"Kiss me, fatboy!"
4- Stephen King's "The Stand": Perfect adaptation from the book.
"This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but with a whimper."
5- "The Exorcist": Yep, I love this movie. Always have.
("Your mother sews socks!" LOL)
6- "Rocky Horror Picture Show": Tim Curry in fishnets, baby. Need I say more?
"Damnit, Janet!"
7- "Labyrinth": David Bowie in tight-tights. You know the rest.
"You remind me of the babe."
8- "The Ring": Scares the hell out of me every damn time, but I can't help but watch it.
"Seven Days!"
9- "What Lies Beneath": Harrison Ford as the bad guy. Who saw that coming? Whew.
10- "You've Got Mail": Actually, I love any of the movies with the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan pairing. They have so much chemistry and all their movies reflect that.
"F-O-X" lol.
Honorable Mention: (Just because my husband LOVES this movie, which is a bit disturbing.. lol): "Moulin Rouge".
I could go on for days, and I haven't even mentioned all the 80's movies I love. LOL. But these are just a few of my faves. Oh, and Flounder? I LOVED "Office Space" LOL. ("That's my stapler!")
:hyper:
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
1. Airpane! - I like the humor and love the sub-titles when the black guys are talking.
2. Midnight Run - Robert De Niro as a bounty hunter and Charles Grodin as an accountant on the run from the government & the mob
3. Animal House - Fat, dunk and stupid is no way to go through life
4. The Dirty Dozen - Great war movie that is funny & dramatic
5. Blues Brothers - Looks like the Oldsmobiles are in early this year
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
I have sooooo many favorites...Too many to list them all.
Right now, I'd have to say I love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy the most. (I watch the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers over and over...)
I guess my other favorite of the moment is Pirates of the Caribbean.
Oh, and Bridgette Jones' Diary is another I can watch over and over.
edited to add...
Flounder, Office Space rocks!!! I love that movie..."Umm, yeah..." ;D
Rhia, I totally agree with you about What Lies Beneath. Harrison Ford as a bad guy really threw me, but the girl's ghost at the end scared the hell out me!!! :o

I can't believe I forgot "Bridget Jones' Diary". I watch that one constantly. Excellent movie!
"Notting Hill" is another one I forgot. Spike totally made that movie. LOL
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
I'll throw in a few of my DVD favorites nobody else has mentioned yet
The Craft
Das Boot (director's cut)
Dune (original with Kyle MacLachlan)
Blue Velvet (Kyle + Dennis Hopper)
Star Trek 2 (Ricardo Montalban as Khan)
Citizen Kane - possibly the best film ever made for its time
I was simply blown away by all three LOTR films as well
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
Good fellas and carlitos way,I like mobster movies.Carlitos way is the only movie I can watch over and over.I also love horror flicks from the 70s,thats when they were the best, the new stuff just doesnt scare me.I think holloween wins for that category.
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
(1) The Last Emporer - thus began my fascination with all things East Asian. The cinematography, the music, the costumes, the fact that it's a true story...I've seen this 100 times and it still gives me goosebumps.
(2) Fight Club - Pure, unbridled testosterone. Dissects 21st century male pyschology while reminding me at the same time what I love about men. Funny as hell.
(3) Breakfast at Tiffany's - Audrey Hepburn!!! My icon since I was a child.
(4) The Thin Red Line - This movie moved me in a way that Saving Private Ryan did not. It drove home the ugliness of war, the sacrifices our soldiers made...but at the same time was a highly spiritual, metaphysical treatise on nature and life. Beautiful.
and last...but not least:
(5) AMELIE: This movie is so special, so inspiring, there are no words to describe it. It turned a hardened cynic (me) into a romantic who belives no matter what, True Love does exist. If you haven't seen it, see it right away - it'll change your life!
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
So many good movies.
The Sand Pebbles - Steve McQueen and Candice Bergen Chinese Boxer Revolution. 1966 nominated for 9 acedemy awards.
Life is Beautiful -- 1997 but we watch it over and over. Italian.
Amelie, so ironic and definitely European humor . Adina good choice
Pulp Fiction . Say no more..my view posted on another thread.
Dr. Strangelove and a Clockwork Orange. Stanley Kubrick When you ride the bomb down or go for a little of the old ultra-violence. No time for the old in and out.
Miracle on 34th St. for Christmas - There is a Santa Claus
Monty Python and the Holy Grail. "It's just a silly rabbit"
The Terminator II
Annie Hall
Cool Hand Luke.
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
I like a bunch of movies already talked about, so just to throw in a few others:
LA Confidential - tight wrighting, superlative acting, inescapable mood. You can't realize how good the writing is the first time you see it.
Empire of the Sun - overlooked Spielberg film. And speaking of Spielberg, let's not forget:
Schindler's List and
Saving Private Ryan.
Field of Dreams, all-time baseball movie. After that, Bull Durham.
First Contact is my favorite Star Trek film, by far. Distant second is Wrath of Khan.
OK, I'll repeat one. Star Wars changed movie-watching for me.

LMFAO! I love Monty! "You've Got No Arms!!"
I love you too Rhia, "Ni".
And Jay, the all-time baseball movies are "Bang the drum Slowly" and "The Natural".
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
Okay - stream of consciousness post because I don't have favorite movies - I love too many.
Monty Python - I must visit the Castle Anthrax someday and visit Bad Zoot.
Kurosawa films always keep me interested and there are some nifty Criterion versions - Red Beard, Rashoman, Ikiru, etc.
Horror - watching Night of the Living Dead (the original now) and the Romero Dead trilogy is always fun to watch. For superior comedy, watch Return of the Living Dead ("Send more paramedics.")
Re: Tarantino - Jackie Brown is the superior work, and Sam Jackson's Ordell Robie may be one of the scariest characters ever. DVD's neat-o because you see umpteen million trailers for flicks starring Pam Grier and Robert Forster. Pam Grier is extremely haute! Jack Hill's work is wonderful - Coffy, Foxy Brown, Big Bird Cage. Exploitation, baby.
I agree with the previous poster - Used Cars is one hell of a flick. Love Jack Warden.
Kurt Russell is a favorite, especially with John Carpenter - Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China. The Thing may be my favorite horror movie, an impossibility for today - all men in the middle of nowhere and a buttload of nihilism. Lovely.
Speaking of impossibilities for today's movie going public what about Blazing Saddles? Think that would fly in today's politically correct world?
I love Lynch - Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive especially.
Horror movies - definitely a fave. Here's a gem - get the DVD of Night/Curse of the Demon. Curse is the American version; Night is the longer and superior British edition. Nary a drop of blood and it's frightening mostly due to a slip of paper.
Speaking of Britain, I love Powell and PRessburger - Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, I Know Where I'm Going, Peeping Tom. Excellent stuff that hardly anybody knows about - thank goodness for Marty Scorsese.
As far as Scorsese goes, I think Casino is the best and outshines Goodfellas, but check out some lesser stuff like King of Comedy and After Hours.
Okay, I'm sure I'll chime in. Oh yeah, Sitri's avatar has to be from Wings of Desire by Wim Winders - unbelievably uplifting film.
Later

Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
I forgot ...
Kubrick! Kubrick! Kubrick!
And my favorite is Barry Lyndon, which is a technical marvel - every scene is a perfect picture.

Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
Charlie's Family- it's an extremely dark and twisted story told from the perspective of the Manson murderers. It's very disturbing.
Wings of Desire- German film noir that was the base story of City of Angels. Stunning. Features music from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Donnie Darko- was already mentioned. It was sad, but enightening. Profound.
Spun-reminds me that I gotta stay off of drugs
City of the Lost Children- with Ron Perlman. French film that is a visual masterpiece.
24 Hour party People-Story of one of my favorite musicians Ian Curtis of joy Division
How High-my favorite stoner flick. Fun sing along
Bowling for Columbine- Because I'm afraid of Americans
Basic Instinct- Femme Fatale 101
Nekromantik 2- I never saw a severed penis on a paper plate covered with Saran Wrap, have you?
AND The Hunger-featuring the quentessential vampire characters Bowie and Peter Murphy.
My favorite Scorcese was Casino as well. My favorite Kubrik was Lolita.
Since you know all probably think I am a sick fuck, I'll throw in this one:
Pretty Woman- cos i'm a stripper and dreams really DO come true ;)
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
THIS IS SOOOO WEIRD!!! Flounder...you totally read my mind!!! I was going to start the SAME POST last night! My bf and I went to the video store to rent a video and we were bored with everything they had. I was going to ask on here for movie suggestions--this is GREAT!!!
Anyway, some of my all time fav's
When Harry Met Sally
Untamed Heart
LOTR (the first one was the best and I'm totally pissed Ian McKellen didn't win the Oscar--he deserved it especially after they screwed him over for Gods and Monsters!)
Star Wars
The Wizard of Oz
Charlotte's Web
The Matrix (only the first one, the other two were crap)
Love Actually
Under the Tuscan Sun
The Ring
Dawn of the Dead (best Zombie movie I've ever seen)
You've Got Mail
But yes, When Harry Met Sally, is BY FAR my FAVORITE MOVIE EVER!!!!!!! "I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle in your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." It doesn't get any better than that! *sigh*
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
i already posted but i failed to mention the sandlot and transpotting!
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
"Wings of Desire"
"Cinema Paradiso"
Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" and "Orpheus"
Antonioni's "Blow Up"
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
"It's not a good name."
"You're a busy man..."
"Three, sir!"
Anyway.......
LOTR immediately vaulted into my top 10 within 15 minutes from the start.
I gotta stick with "Field of Dreams" - for the players, heaven is playing baseball forever, hm? And I'm not even that much of a baseball fan.
I liked "Barry Lyndon" until the second day of the film, when I just kinda wore out.
I never warmed up to "Citizen Kane" the way a movie watcher is supposed to, but I truly do enjoy "Casablanca" - way ahead of its time with a theme or two in there.
Modern horror owes a debt to Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the rules that it ripped up and rewrote.
Overlooked but wonderful old sci-fi film - "The Incredible Shrinking Man."
Enjoyed "Siddhartha," but the real nice thing was that it prompted me to read the Hesse novel, which was wonderful.
Loved "Woodstock" when it first came out.
Re:For Fun- Favorite Movies
"Gas, Food, Lodging" "Mi Vida Loca" or anything by Allison Anders. I don't know, her stuff was just so great during my angsty youth.
"Desperado". Saw it at the theatre and soaked my seat. Neither Rodriguez or Banderas have been able to top this..
"Donnie Darko" was really refreshing to see!
"Frida" was phenomenal, I think they really did her justice.
"Mallrats" 'cause its like being 13 year old goth at the Galleria
"Fantasia". "Big Lebowski". "Clue". "Airplane." "Arthur" "Trading Places."
"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."
"Belle Epoque" -from Spain, don't miss it!!!!
There is this stupid ass funny slapstick Russian movie called "The Diamond Arm." I've been forced to see it so many times but it is sooooo funny, I think you have to be Russian to get it...
Oh, and "Burnt by the Sun" if you like to bawl...
Trainspotting...Terminator II....The Last Seduction (hot!).......Logan's Run....Coffy....Platoon.....The Shining.....Clockwork Orange...Dr. Strangelove....Amadeus....All About Eve.....History of the World Part I.....Welcome to Sarjevo (still on the Goran run)
Whew...there's more, what were we talking about again??? lol
