Sorry to revive an old thread, but Pete was put to sleep on Sunday. It was excruciating. I took him into the vet on Thursday because he was having problems standing, Friday they found a tumor pressing against his trachea, Saturday his temperature dropped and by Sunday morning his kidneys were failing and the vet told me to come in ASAP to say goodbye, that there was nothing more they could do.Quote:

Geez...I'm sorry. I know how it feels- I had to put my childhood pet to sleep in November 2004 and I STILL miss her. If I sit too long and think about I still cry. It will get better, though- it just takes a while. *Hugs*Quote:

Oh, I'm so sorry that your baby passed away. I think hannah's idea is great. I was able to bury my last dog somewhere I could visit her whenever I wanted so it was easier for me to know she was alive in my memory.
Furbabies, HA Such a cute little name for our babies!
Here is Roscoe.
I'm so sorry! :'( My ferret, Pookah had one of her adrenal glands removed last summer because of a tumor... I just noticed her vulva was swollen (again) last night and made an appt. this morning. She only has one gland left... So I guess the only thing left to do is put her on shots to slow down the process.Quote:

Bella....I've had that happen before.
A lot of times vets remove the left glad because it's infected, but often the right one is too. But because it's very close the the vena cava, it's very difficult to remove. it requires laser surgery and most vets don't have that equipment (they use scalpels). There is a guy in Bethesda, MD that is the expert on right adnreal surgery on ferrets named Dr. Weiss. Unfortuantely it's very difficult to get adequate ferret vet care in CA since technically they aren't even supposed to be there. When you say shots, do you mean Lupron? I know people in my ferret club that have used that successfully. It's very good in older ferrets who are probably too old and delivate for surgery.
And, for females, adrenal disease won't kill them. They wll lose their fur and have the swollen vulvas, but it's purely aesthetic (besides the itchy skin). Males will sometimes get tumors so big that it will block their urinary tract and that is obviously lethal.
I know...probably information overload, but I know a lot about ferrets since I have/had so many.
On a brighter note...
