Re:I THINK I'M GONNA SCREAM!!!
Alot of this type of thievery goes on in Brazil. Think I recall seeing on some news show that Brazil ranks highest in the world for this crap.
I hope it doesn't take 4 months to resolve this. I'm thinking *possibly* it took 4 months for my ex because it was out of country. Nothing can really be done to the thieves if they are outside the US, but you can get your money back anyway.

Sounds like a good idea!!! I'll have to get back to you with that...
Then I can give the info to the police and tell the asshole to kiss my :moon: .
Can't wait!!
Bridgette: It probably WAS because it was out of the country. I don't understand WHY, if they (the banks) are going to give someone a "Debit MasterCard", they would make it so hard to protect your money. On a credit card, they just reverse all of the charges with the merchant and tell them to PROVE they are legit otherwise to f*%k off. On a debit card, the burden of proof is left with the consumer. It's just wrong...wrong.
This year, when I went on vacation, I took $300 in cash and then got 2 MasterCard Gift Cards with about $500 on each. They are accepted like credit cards at most places and it goes against the balance on the card. You just use up the card and toss it. It's no good once the balance is gone (I cut mine up just for safe measure). I know that taking personal credit cards and debit cards on vacation is a no-no since that is when the most people get ripped off. By the one local who thrives during tourist season.
Re:I THINK I'M GONNA SCREAM!!!
crappity, you've given me good reason to actually open a saving account like I've planned and not be as cavalier about my debit card as I have been. :P I have a mastercard debit too.
Re:I THINK I'M GONNA SCREAM!!!
Venus, I think the banks are more willing to tell the merchant to fuck off when there's a dispute with cc accounts because they're extending CREDIT, which means THEIR money, to someone to make purchases with the cc. In the case of debit cards, it's the CUSTOMER's money so of course they are less concerned. Shitty, but reality.

Ok...so I just happened to look at my bank statement online. Only to find that my account is wiped out. Why, you ask? Because someone got a hold of my "MasterMoney" card and decided to fucking go shopping!! Most of the charges made were to online merchants. What a pain in the ass!! I now have to go file a police report...and then contact all of the merchants and let them know that this happened. I don't have credit cards for a reason...cuz I don't want the debt, but grrrrrrrr...the moron tried to open their own Yahoo domain...and Yahoo said that they will not release the person's name or any other identifying information without a court order or search warrent. WTF?? Laws can sometimes be very annoying, you know??
Sorry...just had to vent. Thanks for listening.
fuck that. Mastercard should have to do all that not you...

In fact, all you really need to do is buy a web domain (which this person attempted to do), build a website that sells something and allow someone to pay online via credit card...ask for all of the pertinent information...and viola!! You have a nice income...without ever having to sell anything.
This might have been true in the mid-90's but it certainly isn't true today. For a person to start a website and get approved to process online credit card charges today, it requires a stiff up-front fee be paid (mine was $750), then it requires a thorough background investigation of the person who owns the business as well as the business itself. This is meant to weed out potential quick buck fraud artists before they can strike. Unfortunately, once you get outside the USA, the investigation requirements are only as good as local banks force them to be.
Not that it's any excuse, but MasterCard and Visa actually have very little to do with investigations and follow-ups in regard to credit card fraud. It is the underwriting bank which must do this, since that is where the account actually resides. There is a world of difference in the way that, for example, a MasterCard underwritten by Chase Manhattan Bank handles fraud investigations and account settling, versus a MasterCard underwritten by Capital One or Providian (who specialize in issuing "subprime" credit cards to people who don't qualify at Chase Manhattan).

Well, when I called Yahoo, they said that the charge from them was for my own domain. I talked with the bank, and they told me (after I cancelled my card) that there were charges that were being attempted from some several different sites (sounded like web servers). They tried one charge for $500 and when that didn't go through, they attempted one for $475, and on and on...hoping to find a charge that would go through. This person attempted to purchase a lot of merchandise (about $500 worth) on my credit card. When I contacted the company that they bought the stuff from, they gave me the shipping address (my name to some place in Brazil). It was stopped at customs, so the company recovered their items...but, that's why I came to the conclusion that they are attempting to set up some kind of "online store".
Well...hopefully this will all get resolved.
Melonie...what do you know about people who work for companies and steal that company's customer credit card information? The company is US and, unless I am mistaken, that's how this person got my information...can the company get into trouble? Just wondering.

I think that the chargeable offense is credit card fraud, regardless of whether the person attempting to make the fraudulent charges is an individual person or whether that person happens to be an employee of some company who is in a position of processing credit card transactions on your card.
However, it may be that the owner of such a company is also chargeable under a state law for failing to adequately investigate employees in positions which require them to deal with other people's money. If the owner allowed employees to process credit card charges without going through all of the necessary security protocols with MasterCard of Visa somehow, the owner could possibly be held financially responsible for any fraudulent charges made. But, in the US, it's virtually impossible for a company to process a charge to a credit card without following the security protocols, as these actually occur at the underwriting bank or at an online credit card processing service and not at the business itself.
As far as the person in Brazil who somehow came into possession of your credit card number and personal information, THIS is the only person who is directly prosecutable. If/when this person is identified and busted (and that's a big IF !), then some evidence might emerge pointing back to collusion with an employee of the US online business as the means by which the Brazilian obtained your credit card and personal info. However, without such concrete evidence, nothing is going to happen to anyone here in the USA.
