Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I really would like to get into danicng (I'm in college now), but am wondering if there would be any problems getting a corp job after having a strip club on my employment record. I'm thinking of starting for the summer since I just have an corp. internship for the summer and it pays nothing. Thanks in advance!
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I haven't technically started dancing yet (tomorrow - yikes!), however, I seriously doubt that a prospective employer would even need to know about your previous source of income (unless of course you worked in an office or something that might make you more of an asset to a future company). Just tell them you were in school full-time. I think that would be sufficient. :)
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I just finished my Master's degree, and I have been dancing since I was working on my bachelor's, and I have never listed my dancing experience on my resume. You probably wouldn't want to put the strip club as a former employer for the simple fact that it has nothing to do with a corporate job, so it wouldn't help you with prospective employers anyway. If you have a corp internship, that is sufficient for a resume. Most prospective employers wouldn't expect a recent college grad to have much more experience than an internship anyway, and what they are looking for on a resume is related work that will help you in the field.
If you work at a club with a lot of white collar businessmen, you could mention that you are looking for a job post-college (you never know where it could lead) but be really selective and careful because you never know what their intent is (whether they think that you will f them if you work for them or if they are decent and really just want to help you get a good career going). I have friends that have found great corp jobs from really successful employers that were their customers.
Good luck!
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
You don't put stripping on your resume, you just put other work experience you have, like work study, internships, part time jobs, etc. The only way an employer would find out if you don't tell them is if you happen to be in a location that requires dancer licensing and they do background checks before hiring.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
Thanks for the quick responses!! I was just wondering if a future employer would be able to see that I worked in a strip club since I would have to report income for taxes and such.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
You probably won't get a W2 from the club and you will be considered an independent contractor, so it's not like the money has to come from dancing. Further, they aren't going to check your past tax returns. Why would they?
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I danced all the way through college, and I have to say it was a great experience and actually helped me on my ability to talk to ppl i have nothing in common with. And of course i didnt put that on ym resume, and if an employer found out, so what? its something to laugh about later. Also, you shoudl know that if you do taxes as a dancer i think they are quarterly, although i am not positive.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
first of all, there is no such thing as an "employment record" second of all, unless you are posting naughty pics on the internet, who would know?
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
Just keep your college and club lives in separate compartments. Don't let anyone take pictures of you as a dancer. Maintain your anonymity with customers. If possible, work in a club outside the market area for students at your college.... I know former dancers who came up clean in background checks for teaching positions.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
Just don't be like me... I have been dancing for 10 years and in school for 8 of them. I am working on my Master's now, but I can't take a full day, so on my resume, I have a 10 year gap with nothing to put there. I'm thinking of saying I was a part time student and was home with my daughter the rest of the time. But it's still a huge span!!
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I'm thinking of the same thing. I graduated with BS 2 years ago and am just going to be starting grad school. I've often thought about what I'm going to say I was doing for those 2 years. I'm not sure what to say, but I do know that I have gotten incredibly valuable experience with talking to anyone and great self confidence. Hopefully I will be able to find an understanding employer who will be open minded and accept me for the wonderful employee that I will be.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I agree - but then again, it isn't uncommon for people to take a year or two off after finishing their bachelor's to travel or just work odd jobs. I had a friend who went backpacking in Europe for 6 months after graduating, then just worked as a waitress for 6 more months because she wasn't ready to get into a 9 - 5 routine. I also took a year off between my bachelors and masters where all I did was dance, and I have only had a handful of people ask me what I did. Some people I am comfortable telling them that I danced, others I tell them that I worked odd jobs and realized that I wanted to go back to school. Especially with the job market having been down for a few years, no one has suspected anything out of the ordinary!
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
Well, as I've said in a previous post, I'm responsible for the hiring in my office, and I work for a international consulting engineering firm. There is no reason for me to know what employment you had during college. If you're a recent graduate, I'm going to be more interested in your transcript, any work related experience you may have, whether you have taken the appropriate licensing tests, etc. I really don't care if you were a dancer during college or not, I am more interested in if you can do the job. Don't put dancing on your resume.
I agree use the contacts you make during dancing, to open doors later. One of your customers may not hire you at their firm but he may give you a good reference to another. I have done this with a couple of dancers I knew who were working their way through college. One ended up hiring on with a company we do business with, and the other worked in the accounting department of our competition. All it took from me was placing a phone call to the HR person with that company. My phone call just got them an interview, the rest they did themselves.
Once you are hired, be careful who you let know about your past dancing days, because as lea stated some of the men may not be totally professional in their dealings with you and even more so the women in the office. Good Luck with your school.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
Thanks for all the advice! Sounds like I will be good to go as long as I keep pursuing internships and other work experience to build my resume. Hopefully danicing will be a confidence booster and provide good experience in talking to people who I don't know. I have done a lot of performing before, cheerleading, dance productions, etc. and I really felt those have made a bg different in my ability to perform in tense situations where self confidence is key (like interviews or giving presentations).
Thanks again to everyone who responded!!
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
No no no no no no NO!!!!
Don't list your stripping work on your "vanilla" job applications. If and when you leave the biz (and we all do), close the door to that part of your life and open another one. If someone asks what you were doing, tell them "traveling".
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I stripped through school, and had no problems with jobs, did not put stripper down on any apps, EXCEPT where i work now, entertainer. It's now i am paying, i had a gallery of nudes on SW and had to have them taken down, people at my "real" job saw me, and i was called into corporate. I had the nudes taken down, but i think it's my right to pose nude...DAMN i am not a CEO of the friggin job.
Screw em, now i will do clothed and partial clothed shots. One i have in the gallery is fine. No nudes however...anymore. >:(
It can come back to haunt you with co-workers at a future job. I had my pictures in elevators!!!! Shit!
I will get sexy shots, but have to have tits and ass covered, and they know i do stripping, and phone sex...HELLO, but don't want people seeing me on the net nude while working "patient relations." ::)

I learned something new today... Thanks grls ;)
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
Right now I am in college and I have a part time job wokring as a sales rep for a tanning bed distributor and work the rest of my time as a dancer. I plan to work in the legal field when I complete my degree and have asked a number of lawyers and even police officers if it would negatively impact my future plans and all responded no. Dancing is a great tool to use while you are pursuing a higher education. Where else can you make $700 a shift as a college coed!> :P
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
I'd be wary of using customers as contacts. Who knows if the person will rat you out to someone else in the company and the rumor spreads like wildfire?
I got a job at an investment bank through someone I met in a club and eventually people found out that I danced. As a woman and a minority in a field dominated by old white guys I thought that was bad enough. It was hell. No one cared that I went above and beyond, that I had earned the respects of clients, I still heard the comments behind my back.
Re:Stripping in college bad for post-college employment?
What the fuck? Okay, there is no such thing as a stupid question, but sorry this one comes close. I think the original author of the thread just had a brain freeze or something. And I don't mean to be insulting about this.
What cosmic law says you have to tell them you stripped? What goes up comes down, light travels at 186 trillion miles per second, the moon moves an inch away from the earth every year, the sun will someday be a red giant and then a white dwarf, Europa had an ocean, Io has volcanoes, our galaxy will someday collide with the Andromeda galaxy... Those are cosmic laws. Those are things that will and must happen and we cannot lie them away or change them. Stripping is not a cosmic law.
Just don't tell them. If you were in school, write STUDENT in the space provided.
Stripping is privacy (surprisingly, in this case it is), as far as a job interview is concerned. I mean people have such dumb ideas about it anyway, why even bring it up?
Just lie.
Nevertheless, i mean no insult. But this one was pretty easy to answer.
