Go Go Dancing
Okay, I have a question about this type of dancing. I know there were a few threads about this in the past, and after searching for them I didn't quite find the answers I was looking for.
Anyway, one of the trendy downtown clubs here will soon be holding open auditions for go go dancers, which I may be interested trying out for. I went to the website, and they give an email address so interested persons can send an email to request more information and give the club some information on them. They are also hiring choreographers, so I am assuming the dancers will be taught what to do. Here is a link to the website so you can get a better feel for what the club is like.

So my question is, should I tell them I was an exotic dancer for a couple of years? I don't know whether that will help the situation, by showing them that I have dancing experience, or if I will get looked down upon for my past history of being an exotic dancer.
Hmmmm, what to do? :-\
ps...can't wait to tell the boyfriend about THIS, lol

Re:Go Go Dancing
i'm sure he wont "let" you do that either.

Re:Go Go Dancing
Hmmmmm, I'd take the chance and tell them if you worked at a classy place that is known for stage dancing. Also, talk about any ballet, jazz, etc....even if it was when you were young. Also, if you took some dance classes for fun. for instance, I want to take hip-hop courses and I would mention it.
Mostly they just want to see you up there strutting though. Go for it, good luck!

I'm unsure as to what go-go dancing even *is*

Re:Go Go Dancing
I'm assuming it's like cage dancing? Or dancing on the bar or whatnot? I used to hire for a club that only had that type of dancers. We really liked to hire girls who had been dancers in other bars before because they are obviously more skilled, and more prepared for the hardships of the job. I would definately tell them about your previous experience, and like Katrine said, mention (even if its not true) that you did alot of stage work.

Re:Go Go Dancing
I wrote about dancing like this in a thread long ago. I shadow box danced, and danced on a balcony inside a night club. Some of us ended up covering our boobs with paint on latex, glow in the dark. This type of dancing is fun, but hard work. You are on a stage, or however the club you are interested works for longer periods of time.
The club since i danced closed down due to a shooting. opened back up under new name and owners. Still the same however.
Except no painting boobs anymore, booty shorts and tiny tops. Crowd seems to be younger, and not too much money going around, at least for this club.

Re:Go Go Dancing
This sounds like yet another Buffalo entrepreneur's idea to try and successfully compete against Canadian border clubs 10 minutes away which can legally offer alcohol, nudity, and high contact lap dances for US$14.
From the club's website it appears that the "go go dancers" this club is looking for will most likely be employees of the club. Their role will be strictly to provide eye candy inside the club and during TV coverage, with little or no interaction with customers being possible. This probably translates into a decent hourly wage (guess $20/hr) to dance continuously 40 minutes out of every hour for an 8 hour shift per night. Tip income will probably be marginal, and private dance income will be non-existant.
If you're looking to be prominently seen dancing in a string bikini by Buffalo residents, this job might be great. But if you're looking to earn serious money, this sounds like a dead end proposition.

Re:Go Go Dancing
I used to go-go dance in 2 NYC clubs about 7 years ago. If you are going to interview for a job like that, I wouldnt mention exotic dancing at all, unless it is dancing in a bikini bar type of place like some in Jersey. If it is a nightclub then the type of dancing that you will be doing is totally different, and the only thing that you help you from your stripping days is just having the confidence to look good up there. Most night clubs will hire you to dance on a stage or podium in sexy clothes and dance your ass of for at least 1/2 to an hour at a time over teh couse of the whole night And the style of dancing you will be doing is typically what a good dancer will do on the floor of a nightclub. You go with the beat of the music differently than you do when stripping, it wont be the same slow sensuality that you have to have, when you dance in a strip club. You also wont get paid even a third of what an average stripper makes and you will be 10 times more exhausted when you get off your shift. Also and this is the most ironic thing of all, in a strip club guys arent allowed to take touching liberties with you unless you or your club allows it. If you go-go dance be prepared for a whole lot of hands on your ass out of nowhere unless you are dancing far away from the crowd. My advice is unless you are doing it for fun and adventure, dont expect any of the luxuries that come with stripping, and you dont get tips at least at the clubs I worked at, from customers.

Re:Go Go Dancing
As for advice about the go-go dancers wanted for this club I happen to agree with most of the posts I've seen here. The owners of this club just seem to prefer to bring in exotic dancers to dance on their stages, cages, etc... I know of several dancers who I work with regularly who make extra money by dancing at local nightclubs. Where I work we are referred to as mostly 'dancers' over 'strippers'. Which is why we are known as 'go-go' dancers. To me, go-go style dancing is simply a label attached to a type of dancing that is strictly stage related. Typically, one dancer at a time is expected to hold the interest (while dancing in a bikini) of the entire club. These clubs aren't very big, so it is neccesary to be extremely personable in order to make good money. There are no lapdances, table dances, nor VIP dances here. Therefore, if a dancer comes into the club in a bad mood everyone notices(especially bar regulars). Like every form of dancing this kind has its good points and its drawbacks. It all depends on where each individual dancer decides to draw her own personal line. Everyone has the right to choose.

Re:Go Go Dancing
I often am asked to do go-go gigs, and usually it is with a mix of other guys and girls. All the other posts above are right I think - it is a simple non-choreographed dance gig around a pole, on a podium, or a stage wearing a sexy outfit, but not stripping.
It is always good to get a clarification on what managers / promoters mean when they ask you to go-go dance because I have found in the past that those who knew I was a stripper would basically expect that for a cheaper rate. >:( Most go-go sets are anything form 20 minutes to 30 minutes long, and usually they allow you to take a water bottle up with you. Most guys that do it would eventually remove their tops and dance in short shorts, maybe flashing a g-string occassionally, but not stripping. I probably would NOT mention the exotic dancing for the reason mentioned above.
