Elle, there are both subsidized and unsubsidized loans. The difference is who pays the interest when you are still in school--you utimately, or Uncle Sam.
The place to start is FAFSA, a form which helps figure this out. The government's site for this is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Odds are very high that you will need this no matter what. The schools financial aid office is a good place to start since it is free to you except for the headaches of dealing with paper pushers. They want your money so it is in their interest to help you get it.
Stafford loan applications also generally prompt the IRS to start poking around your own and your parents' tax returns, since household income is a major factor in loan eligibility / gov't interest payments !

Fill out your app ASAP ASAP.....in July, the interest rates are going up! I actually need to consolidate for that purpose......
