Stupid fireworks!!!
Sorry guys but I just had to tell you about this year's 4th of July injuries. I got them all today, and just so you know, no I wasen't even drunk, or drinking for that matter. (I just got back from the ER)
1. left hand, web 1st degree burn (sparkelers)
2. left hand, inner thumb, 1st degree burn (artillary shell)
3. left hand, fist finger 1/2 inch cut, trying to open fireworks with a pocket knife
4.right hand, first finger tip, 1st degree burns with blisters (roman candles)
5. right hand, outer thumb, 2nd-or 3rd degree severe burn (flash brun from lighing fuse for artillary shell)
I feel like crap now, I waited till I was done with all the show, and everyone else was leaving too, but by then hubby looked at me and said, "honey wanna get the oven mitts off your hands and go iin and see how clumsey you really were?" I had "Mom" bandage up both hands and use burn creme, so they could have been worse. After the creme, she wrapped them up in tons of gauze, and then taped oven mitts to my hands so they wouldn't get burned again.
Buddy of mine there tonight, had 1/2 of his beard burn off when he was lighting a fountain off. LOL, and yes he was very drunk.
Said buddy's Dad, lost hearing for 1 hr after he stood on top of burning exploding firework, lost part of his eyebrows, and his hat too. Yes, he was more drunk that buddy. (seems like a trend around here, huh?)
Hubby burned holes in his shirt after cinders fell on if from the sky. He also burned his fingers too, from too many artillary shells(he had to replace me, cause I couldn't even hold my drink!LOL)
So that was my day in a nutshell(or artillary shell fi you prefer). So what I wanna know is anyone else suffering, fire works syndrome too?

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Wow hun....seems like you had quite a day! And, for those very reasons, fireworks of any kind are illegal here in NY. Only licensed professionals are allowed to use them. Then again, since I'm so close to the PA border, where fireworks are legal, I see many people with illegal fireworks bought in PA. I keep waiting for them to lose a hand or something. But hey, that's what they get for being stupid (and no, that's not directed at you--accidents can happen to responsible people--I'm talking about the stupid 13 year old boys down the street who are just being assholes).
Hope everyone else had a safe and happy holiday.

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
I absolutely hate fireworks. I went to elementary school with a boy who was blind because one blew up in his face. I've always refused to get close to them, but a couple years a freind lured me out to what was supposed to be a nice family fourth celebration. The drunk assholes lit their kid on fire! Literally, they shot a firework at their kid by accident and it was caught under his shirt and then his shirt caught on fire and they were too drunk to do anything about it!
These days I just stay home with the pups - one of them is afraid of fireworks. But when I did venture out to get food after the fireworks were over someone had driven a car through one of my neighbors houses! Holy crap!

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
First of all, Ki, sorry about your injuries. OUCH. I do not & never have liked fireworks. When I was young kid, one was thrown at me while I was sittin' on a porch, very scary. Luckily, it rained here for a couple days so it wasn't as bad. Tomorrow it's supposed to be nice, so who knows. I also stay home w/my bunny, she's afraid of any sudden noise, loud or not. Last year my next door neighbor got his car partially burned from fireworks. Being that 4th is on a wk end makes it worse, also it's a full moon. take care all.

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Thanks guys, I feel better already. But just to let you guys know, they were not drunk enough to start firing them off at each other. That is always a plus!

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
That's why I take out the boat and watch the fireworks on the water. Each year in Tampa they have a huge fireworks display. Your own cooler, no crowding, and music to go along....
No money spent on pyrotechnics.... yea...
Anyway, sorry to hear about the burns. Hope it heals fast..

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
PROfessionals Screw Up Too!
I was at the town fireworks - watching a great show by the river when the finale came (I shot my last pictures) and all of a sudden the sky lit up - HORIZONTALLY!
Not up the way it should go, but backlighting the buildings, skimming accross the river -really beautiful. I was thinking Damn..I missed that!
THen we saw flames popping from the roof of a nearby restaurant, people running, cops ordering us back - total chaos. Turned out 3 people were badly burned, they brought in LifeFlight - not a good scene.
Still wish I got that picture though - NO news crews were around.
Hope everyone had a safe 4th

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Um, yeah, of course professionals screw up (heck, doctors screw up all the time--leaves room for malpractice lawyers!). Fireworks are tricky and dangerous little bastards which is why they shouldn't be "played" with. Personally, I think they should be restricted to licensed professionals across the country. Yeah, things can go wrong, but it's a lot less likey when you have sober people that know what they're doing. And anyway, professional show are SOOOO much better anyway! :)

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
damn right those professionals can error. about 15 years ago (damn, was it that long?) my parents took me to see some fireworks in a nearby town. they were set off in a baseball field with bleachers so people could get a close-up view. we were in a park about half a mile away, thankfully. something happened and one of the fireworks landed on the people in the bleachers. several people injured....don't remember if there were any deaths or not. anyhow, there were no fireworks in that town until last year i think. i like them from miles away, but don't plan to watch any. stupid people in my apartment complex set off sparklers and make noise....grrr.
anyhow, kitana, hope you're feeling better...take care of you hands hun :)

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Every year the idiots who live in the building behind mine (we share the same parking lot) ste off fireworks on 4th of July. Last year they caught a tree on fire in the bank next door (fortunately someone was sober enough to spray a fire extinguisher on it before it blazed). They set off rockets etc, and the remnants evetually litter the parking lot and buildings in the area.
I asked a neighbor about it my first year here and they said "Oh, they do that every year. Its no harm". I then pointed out the half burnt rocket remnants that was on her window ledge.
Thats how they get away with it every year in a residential area - all my neighbors are all idiots.

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Kitana, I'm sorry about your hands...hope they heal soon! I havent lit off fireworks in years, but I don't think I'd risk it anyhow. I usually go and watch the huge fireworks displays @ the various waterfronts in town...and hope that nothing goes wrong.

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Yikes.. Sorry about the injuries, Kitana.
All the mofos in my neighborhood were lighting them off like crazy last night. Hell, they started in the middle of June. Can't tell ya how many times I was tempted to shove those damn fireworks up their arses and send them into orbit. Around here, someone's always getting hurt when lighting them off. Then again, they're completely intoxicated at the time, so.. LOL
Heal fast, Girl..

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
I just heard on the news where a 16 yo put a firework in the mail slot of a lady's house, she's in hospital, house burned up.
-
Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Wow! I lit several fireworks for the first time this 4th. Didn't get hurt, but I was pretty scared at first (especially with those roman candles); looks like I had a reason to be.
-
Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Ouch! I'm sorry, but at the same time, I'm glad that I am one of those who stands by and watches.. I have never done the fireworks thing because I have seen my share of horror too...
Hope everyone had fun and everyone was safe...

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
I liek fireworks but I think too many stupid people get a hold of them. Hell, even intelligent people can have issues.
The worst thing I have ever experienced is that there is a fireworks factory about 4 miles from my mom's house and one of their storage buildings blew up taking out a 20 year old worker. The explosion was so big that the closest houses got their windows shattered.

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
Parents can be stupid. Here some people let their kids light off sparklers and other "harmless fireworks" in the playground. Morons, yeah, light fireworks where there are cedar chips!! Not like it's a fire hazard.
People don't think!!

Re:Stupid fireworks!!!
damn that sucks. The scariest thing that happend to me was my brother was lighting a fire cracker and I ran up the steps by the house to be safe ( I had a REALLY bad feeling about it) and the freak lit it the paniced and threw it backwards, of course it landed on me and got caught in my hair, I had a spaz attack and was lucky to get it out of my hair as soon as it landed on the ground it went off.
