Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to tell you what happened to my dog, Choogie. She's ok now, but I wanted to warn everyone not to use Hartz Flea and Tick Drops on their pets. Also, BioSpot is bad too.
For the past month or so, Choogie has been very lethargic, stumbling when she walked and suddenly seemed to be going blind. I bought the Hartz Flea and Tick Drops at Target and put it on Choogie's back as directed on June 9th. She had her second dose a month later on July 9th. This change in her came on so suddenly, I tried to think of anything different I may have done to her or the house that could have caused this. I finally remembered the Harts Flea Drops and decided to check out the active ingredient, Phenothrin, on the internet.
I was shocked at what I found. Thousands of animals, mostly cats, have been killed by this stuff. There is even a website devoted to warning people of the toxicity in these products. Please check out this website and read for yourself: http://www.hartzvictims.org/index.php
Pass it on to your friends who have pets, not to use these products! :'(

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
yeah.. chemicals scare me.....
I use an herbal flea collar that wroks great on my cats. its from petgaurd (http://www.petguard.com/) you cant get it from the website, but vets, petstores, and natural/organic stores can order it for you. it aslo costs the same as a regular flea collar.
:sarcastic: yeah... I want to wear a chemical necklace too..... :sarcastic:
but seriously, those herbal collars are great, and they smell wonderfull.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
Yep. There was a class action suit against Hartz last year because their drops DO cause seizures in cats and small dogs.
A healthy diet, clean house, good excercise, and a little garlic powder will take care of most fleas/ticks.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
I had the same thing happen to my cat a LONG time ago...except it was the worm pills. Put it in his food and then went to my grandparents for the day. Only to come back to a cat that was convulsing on the floor, pupils dilated, and could hardly walk. I totally freaked out. called the vet and they said that all I could do at this point was "wait it out". What torture!! I just laid some blankets and my pillow on the floor, and curled up with him for the night. He was ok by morning...but it was so scary. I won't EVER EVER EVER give any of my pets anything like that ever again.

Thanks, I just bought flea drops for my boxer on Friday. Haven't applied them yet.. looks like they get returned.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
My dog only gets holistic remedies. So far they work just fine and we've had no problems. Plus she doesn't even know she's taking it. We just slip it in her food (wet not crunchy) and don't have to worry about her not getting the full dose.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
A Hartz collar almost killed my cat. HE was trembling and stumbling around and couldn't hold his head up. My vet said never ever use store bought flea products because they are never accurate doses and are manufactured shoddily.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
Hartz products as Lena says was the topic for many months for pet owners. I HATE Hartz products. I use no flea collar on my dogs. They get a bath once a week, in Johnsons baby shampoo! Yep even plain water will drown fleas! They eat Healthy weight management with some brewers yeast on top. Always good for dogs. For heartworm prevention, Sentinel, this is a hard tablet that helps for intestinal worms as well as fleas and ticks! Expensive for all my dogs, but well worth the price.
Keep your pets off dirt (fungus, yeast infections etc.) clean and dry on top of a good diet with baths and heartworm prevention. That is all a pet needs except love after that.
Good topic, HARTZ needs to be recalled. Bad bad products.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
i have in the past used advanage from the vet and it worked. my cats are indoor cats so they dont need it anymore, when i was using it i had a screened in porch and they caught them that way. also you can bathe in dawn dishwashing soap (blue kind, origanal formula) kills fleas dead. a groomer told me that trick and it works.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
I used Hartz Flea and Ticks for my Dogs a few Months during the cooler months. I did not notice any side effects but I did not like the Drops. I still noticed Fleas on my Dogs after about 2 months of using Hartz. I also used The Premium Hartz Gold. My complaint was that it did not have any effect against Fleas and Ticks.
Here in Florida, The only effective Flea and Tick Meds seem to be Frontline, Sentinel and Advantage. You also need the Heartworm treatments as well as being sure your Home is bug sprayed monthly or so. Also if you own Property you need to put Bug Killer on your Yard.
Frontline or any Dog Meds are not effective against Fire Ants. Fire Ants can wreck havoc on a Dog as the Dog will sit in the Ant hill trying to scratch them off before realizing they are coming from the Ant Hill. Inspect your Yard for Fire Ant Hills every week.
I dont use Hartz anymore not because it causes side effects but that it does not work.
Frontline, Sentinel and Advantage are what work and they are not cheap. (About $30 for a three month supply). Pet Supermarket or Petco is where I get them.

BARF (Bones And Raw Foods) Diets are only better if the owner has done a ton of research and is willing to spend the time on preperation and continuing research to provid their dog with a helthy, balanced diet. Just throwing the dog meat is not better for them.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
A tad off topic but here goes. About the BARF diet for dogs i have learned one very important lesson from a couple who own pitbull dogs near my roomates place of business. Animal control was called because one dog was thin. I have seen him, not skinny or sick looking, just thin. People have complained that the owner has been feeding the animal people food, He works at Burger King btw. Other people walk by (the dog is properly chained with shelter and bedding, goes in at night) and feed the dog people food as well.
Anyway, upon animal control showing up and asking questions about the dog, the owners said they are feeding the dog people food. They got a $60 fine, and a mandatory visit within 30 days of the fine for a vet checkup. You just can not feed dogs people food. They need a balanced diet. So, there was no other reason animal control said other than the dog was not being fed properly, and that is a form of neglect! Making a balanced rounded out diet takes time and knowledge. My vet does not even like the BARF diet. But when you have a sick or elderly dog this diet serves a purpose short term. So i have heard and done with a heartworm positive dog before. Rice & boiled chicken for 2 weeks, then dog food for the needs of the dog while going through treatment.

That is a myth. You should never feed dogs raw meat for the same reasons why we shouldn't eat raw meat(i.e.food poisoning,salmonella,etc.).They can't get very sick. Please don't feed your dog this type of diet.Thanks.

Shut the hell up, you insensitive Troll. :finger:
Anyhoo.. Back to the topic.. I've never used Hartz products on any of my pets. I never trusted them. Glad to know that my intuition was justified by this.
I'm so glad your dog is alright, hon.

Re:Hartz Flea Drops almost killed my dog!!!
We can learn a lot from animals. They don't judge and make fun like humans."To err is human,to canine is divine."Some people should just get a clue.............or two.
